​שנים אני שומעת על הסידרה "נוכריה" מאת דיאנה גבלדון וביתר שאת מאז שנטפליקס הפכו את הספרים לסידרה מצליחה.

איכשהו, העובדה שכל ספר כולל כמה מאות עמודים וגרוע מכך בעברית מפוצל לשני כרכים, ממש הרתיעה אותי.

880 עמודים כפול 10 כרכים בעברית זה היקף קריאה של כמה חודשים לאדם ממוצע.

צריך להיות משהו ממש מבריק ומושך בסידרה כזו שאקרא כל כך הרבה עמודים. 

אלוהים, כשאני חושבת על זה ג'ורג' מרטין המסכן התחיל לפרסם את הסידרה "שיר של אש ושל קרח" בשנות ה 90 המוקדמות. עד היום הוא לא סיים אותה. וגבלדון כבר היום פירסמה 3 ספרים יותר ממנו בזמן קצר יותר. ממש צריך להיות מוכה אמוק בכדי לכתוב כזאת כמות של דפים בפרק זמן קצר יחסית.

החלטתי להתחיל עם הפריקוול הזה, להרגיש את המים ולהחליט אם אני אצלול ליתר הסידרה. 

בפרק הזה הקורא פוגש את ג'יימי חבול ומוכה שמצטרף לחברו איאן בצרפת ושניהם הופכים שכירי חרב בתשלום.

המשימה הראשונה שלהם ללוות את בתו של הרב והנדוניה שלה ספר "תורה" אל החתן המיועד. גם ג'יימי וגם איאן נמשכים לרבקה, בתו של הרב. אך אליה וקוץ ​בה, הם בתולים וג'נטלמנים ולא קיימו יחסי אישות עם נשים כי הם מסרבים לקיים כאלה יחסים עם נשים בעלות מוסר מפוקפק.

מה אגיד ומה אומר – נראה ספר מעניין?

אז זהו, שלא.

הפרק הראשון של הפריקוול הזה היה משמים וכשמשהו כבר זז שם, הכתיבה של גבלדון כך כך חצצית שבא לי לבכות.

נכון מדובר במאה ה18, נכון מדובר בשני סקוטים חסודים וברים שברחו מסקוטלנד, אבל מעבר לחגורת הצניעות שהגיבורים לובשים, מה זה הדבר הזה? מה זה הסיגנון הזה?

איףףףףף.

הדבר שהכי מוריד לי בספרים, זה אנכרוניזם. ישנם מקרים מוסברים. אבל ברוב המקרים זה סוג של זילזול באינטיליגנציה של הקוראים.

הסופר סומך שהקורא לא יבדוק בדיוק את לוחות הזמנים.

​  לענייננו   – היסטורית, הרגליי ההגיינה המוכרים לנו כיום, צברו תאוצה באמצע המאה ה 19. לפחות 100 שנים אחרי שג'יימי ואיאן פגשו את בת הרב.

למעשה,  האירופאים של המאה ה18 חיו באושר בצחנה בלי להתרגש מכך יותר מידי. רק לאליטה היו בתי שימוש ומקלחות והיתר מצאו פתרונות בתחום הציבורי, אם כי בתי מרחץ משותפים נחשבו למעודדים חטא.​​

כך ללא ניקוז, ללא מקלחות מיותרות, התיזו בושם על הסירחון והסריחו קצת יותר.

לונדון נחשבה לעיר מסריחה ואני בטוחה שבסקוטלנד ובצרפת המצב היה לא פחות מסריח. אמה מה, גיבורנו מודאג מכך שנודף ממנו ריח גוף רע בזמן שהוא מציל עלמה במצוקה ורוכב על הסוס מאחריה .

גם אם הרגליי הגיינה היו שיא האופנה, אני לא חושבת שבאמצע מרדף והצלה יש למישהו זמן להריח את בית השחי שלו ולהרהר עד כמה הוא מסריח.

אני בטוחה שדיאנה גבלדון תסתדר גם בלי חוות הדעת המלומדת שלי. בכל זאת כמעט 18 אלף מצביעים הדוקים דירגו את הספר הזה שנושק לדירוג 4 כוכבים בגודרידס.

קצת בעסה שרכשתי את כל הספרים בסידרה. אבל לא אבדה תקוותנו והנר עדין בוער – עוד פועמת בי התקווה שהם לא משעממים כמו הפריקוול הזה.

I have been aware of the "Strangers" series by Diana Gabaldon for quite some time, mainly since it gained popularity as a successful Netflix show. However, the fact that each book contains hundreds of pages and is divided into two volumes in Hebrew has deterred me from reading it for years.

Reading through ten volumes of 880 pages each in Hebrew would take an average person several months. For me to commit to such a long series, it must have something truly captivating and exceptional.

Poor George Martin started publishing the "Song of Fire and Ice" series in the early '90s. To this day, he has not finished it. And Gabaldon has already today published three more books than him in a shorter time. You have to be beaten to death to write such pages relatively quickly.

I've chosen to begin with this prequel to understand the story and determine whether I should continue the rest of the series.

This chapter introduces the reader to Jamie, who appears bruised and battered. He reunites with his friend Ian in France, and they both take up paid mercenary work.

The initial responsibility assigned to the group is to escort the Rabbi's daughter along with her dowry, a sacred "Torah" book, to her soon-to-be husband. While Jamie and Ian are drawn to Rebecca, the Rabbi's daughter, they are respectful and courteous individuals who have yet to engage in intimate relationships with women due to their high standards and moral beliefs.

Does the book seem exciting based on what I say?

While it may appear intriguing, it is not.

I didn't quite connect with the first episode of this prequel. While the plot was intriguing, the writing left something to be desired and failed to evoke strong emotions in me. All in all, it was an underwhelming experience.

The narrative, which takes place in the 18th century and follows the tale of two devoted Scotsmen who flee their homeland, must convey a meaningful message beyond the characters' simple attire. The underlying theme or purpose behind the story's writing style was poor.

Phew.

One thing that bothers me in books is when there are anachronisms. While there may be some instances where it is explained, in this case, the author is not giving readers enough credit for their intelligence. The author assumes readers won't check the historical accuracy.

In terms of history, the hygiene practices we are familiar with today began to gain popularity in the mid-1800s, over a century after Jamie and Ian encountered the Rabbi's daughter.

In the 18th century, Europeans could tolerate unpleasant odors without much discomfort. The upper class had access to private restrooms and showers, while others used communal facilities. However, communal baths were often frowned upon due to concerns about immoral behavior. People of that time lived without regular bathing, relying on methods such as applying perfume to mask unpleasant smells.

In the past, London, Scotland, and France were known for their unpleasant odors. However, our hero is worried about having body odor while rescuing a damsel in distress and riding a horse.

I doubt anyone would prioritize smelling their armpits and pondering their stench amid a chase and rescue, even if hygiene practices were trendy.

Although I am confident that Diana Gabaldon does not require my expertise, it is worth mentioning that this book has received a 4-star rating on Goodreads from almost 18,000 readers.

I'm disappointed that I purchased all the books in the series. However, I'm still holding onto hope and remaining optimistic – perhaps the prequel won't be as dull as I anticipate.
