הספר זכה לשבחים רבים ואף הוכתר כספר השנה בגודרידס. רכשתי אותו כשפורסם, אבל רק עתה הגעתי אליו.

זהו סיפורם של שני צעירים בני 22 שנפגשים בסיום הקולג': לאטו (לאנסלוט) בן למשפחה פריווילגית בעלת הון, שואף להיות שחקן תיאטרון. לרגע, בסיום לימודיו בקולג', נראה שהוא גם יגשים את חלומו. אבל, הוא לא מצליח לשבור את התקרה כך שהוא נאלץ להסתפק בתפקידים קטנים ומתסכלים.

מתילד לעומתו, מגיעה ממשפחה דיספונקציונלית. שנים היא גדלה אצל סבתה הצרפתייה ומאוחר יותר אצל דודה, שנרמז שהשתייך לפשע המאורגן. היא חולמת על לימודים בקלוג' ואכן היא מצליחה להתקבל ובדרך לא שיגרתית גם משיגה מימון לכך.

שבועיים לפני סיום הלימודים לאטו ומתילד נפגשים במסיבה. הם מתאהבים בטירוף ולאחר שבועיים נישאים. כל החברים סביבם מתערבים שהנישואים לא יחזיקו מעמד, אבל שנה ועוד שנה עוברת והלהבה שביניהם לא שוככת.

החלק של לאטו איטי, לכאורה מנקודת מבטו מתוארת זוגיות אוהבת מוצלחת תומכת גם בזמנים הקשים. נכון, הזוג סובל מקשיים, אבל הם בעיקר כאלה שנובעים מחוסר יכולתו של לאטו להגשים את עצמו ומהעובדה שהוא חיי בבועה של חוסר מודעות ליכולות שלו ולחיי היום יום של אישתו, שעסוקה בתחזוקה של הבית ושל האגו שלו. 

נראה ששניהם סובלים מחרדת נטישה ועזיבה ומערכת היחסים שלהם נעה מסביב לסקס ופחד הנטישה שמתעורר לחילופין בו או בה.

לאחר 23 שנים של נישואים לכאורה מאושרים, אירוע קטן ושולי מערער את האמונה הבסיסית של לאטו בזוגיות שלו עם מתילד. היא לא מודעת לכך, אבל חשה שמשהו מתחולל.

החלק של מתילד מתחיל כחודש לאחר האירוע המכונן בחייהם של הזוג. מתילד שאינה מודעת לאירוע, מתחילה את חייה שוב כאלמנה ומתקשה להסתגל לאובדן.

החלק של מתילד זועם קשה מפורר את תמונת הנישואים המאושרת. כמעין חזרה על האירועים שתוארו בחלק של לאטו, אירוע אחרי אירוע הקורא נחשף לצד השני של המטבע, לשקר, לזיוף, לזעם שמתחת לפני השטח.

רצף של אירועים מטלטלים, נוראיים שלאטו וגם הקורא לא היו מודעים להם מעברה של מתילד ומחיי הנישואים. התמימות מתנפצת והקורא לומד על הפער הבלתי נסבל בין הקליפה הזוהרת, האוהבת והפנים הרקוב.

החלק השני של הספר מפעים. חזק ומטלטל. 

בקצב מסחרר וללא רחמים, הסופרת מכניסה את הקורא לתוך נבכי חייה האפלים של מתילד. פרק אחרי פרק היא מנפצת את המראה של חייהם המשותפים וחושפת אירועים שאפילו לאטו לא מודע להם. בשלב מסויים ממש הרגשתי כמו מתאגרף שחטף בזירת התאבקות.

אני יכולה להבין את הרגשות הדיכוטומיים שמביעים הקוראים השונים: מחד כ- 200 עמודים איטיים, שמעניינים עד גבול מסויים אבל לא באמת מושכים לקרוא הלאה. הדמות של לאטו שמרוכז בעצמו, באכזבות שלו, באידיליה שהוא בונה סביב דמותה של מתילד וסביב חיי הנישואים שלהם.

מאידך, דמותה של מתילד קשה עם קצוות חדים, מניפולטיבית וטוטאלית ביחסה ללאטו. העבר שלה מסביר את הדמות שלה, אבל זה לא מכהה את העוקץ של הדמות והתחושות של הקורא שנעות בין אמפטיה לילדה המסכנה שהוריה עזבו אותה וחמותה בזה לה למיאוס מהמעשים שלה, המניפולטיביות והטוטאליות שבה היא מגנה על הנישואים שלה במחירים כבדים.

חלק מהפרקים קראתי גם בעברית בכדי לוודא שהבנתי נכון את הסיטואציה. זה קרה בעיקר בחלק של מתילד ובסוף החלק של לאטו. אציין כי התרגום מצויין.

קשה לי לכתוב "רוצו לקרוא". אבל אם הספר כבר נפל לידכם, תשקיעו את המאמץ בכדי להגיע לחלק השני, הוא שווה את זה.

The book was highly acclaimed and even awarded "Book of the Year" on Goodreads. Although I bought it when it was first released, I only recently had the chance to read it.

Here's the tale of two 22-year-old individuals who meet toward the end of their college days. One of them, Lato (short for Lancelot), comes from a privileged family with significant wealth. He has always dreamed of becoming a theater actor, and for a brief moment, he might achieve his goal. Unfortunately, he struggles to break through and eventually settles for minor and unfulfilling roles.

Mathilde, however, hails from a dysfunctional family. She spent her childhood with her French grandmother and later with her uncle, who had alleged connections to organized crime. Her aspirations to attend college became a reality, and she found unconventional means to secure funding for her education.

At a party two weeks before graduation, Lato and Mathilde meet and quickly fall in love. Against the odds, they get married after only two weeks. Despite their friends' doubts, their love continues to burn bright year after year. From Lato's perspective, their relationship is a slow and steady journey of love that supports them through difficult times. Of course, their relationship is not without its challenges. Lato struggles with self-fulfillment and lives in a bubble of unawareness about his wife's day-to-day life as she maintains their home and his ego. But through it all, their love endures.

Lato's part is slow; seemingly, from his point of view, a successful, loving relationship is depicted that supports him even in the hard times. True, the couple suffers from difficulties, but they are mainly those that stem from Lato's inability to fulfill himself and the fact that he lives in a bubble of unawareness of his abilities and the day-to-day life of his wife, who is busy maintaining the house and his ego.

Both seem to suffer from abandonment and abandonment anxiety, and their relationship revolves around sex and the fear of abandonment that alternately awakens in them.

A minor incident shakes Lato's belief in his 23-year-long happy marriage with Mathilde. Although Mathilde is unaware of it, she senses that something is amiss.

Mathilde's story begins a month after a defining event in the couple's life, which she is unaware of. She is now a widow and struggling to adjust to the loss. As the story progresses, we witness a furious Mathilde who shatters the picture of a once-happy marriage. The unfolding events reveal the other side of the coin- the lies, the forgeries, and the hidden rage simmering beneath the surface, much like what was described in Lato's part.

As the story unfolds, Leto and the reader are struck by a series of horrific and unexpected events from Mathilde's past and marriage. The veil of innocence is lifted, contrasting the facade of love and warmth and the true horror beneath.

The second part of the book is intense and impactful.

The author plunges the reader into Mathilde's complex and troubled life rapidly, leaving no room for mercy. With each chapter, she unravels the illusion of their seemingly perfect life and exposes secrets that even Leto was unaware of. I sometimes felt like a boxer thrown into a wrestling ring, struggling to keep up with the intense plot twists.

I understand the mixed emotions conveyed by different readers. On the one hand, the book has about 200 slow pages that are somewhat interesting but not engaging. The protagonist, Lato, is self-absorbed and fixated on his disappointments. He constructs an idealized version of his wife, Mathilde, and their married life.

Mathilde's character is portrayed as harsh, with sharp edges and manipulative tendencies in her relationship with Leto. Although her past provides some insight into her behavior, it does not excuse the negative impact she has on both Leto and the reader. As we follow her story, we may empathize with her difficult upbringing and disgust at her actions. Mathilde is willing to go to great lengths to defend her marriage, even if it means being manipulative and controlling.

To ensure my understanding was accurate, I read a few chapters in Hebrew. Specifically, I focused on Mathilde's section and the conclusion of Lato's section. It's worth noting that the translation is exceptional.

I find it difficult to say "run to read." However, if the book is within your reach, it's worth trying to delve into the second part.
