הפרופסור, הוא סיפרה הראשון של שרלוט ברונטה. כמי שאהבה יותר את אנקת גבהים האפלולי וסיימה בקשיים את ג'יין אייר התלבטתי אם לקרוא את הפרופסור.
זהו סיפורם של ויליאם קרימסוורת, בן למשפחת אצולה, שמואס בחייו באנגליה ובעבודתו אצל אחיו המתייחס אליו בצורה משפילה. ויליאם יוצא לבלגיה ושם מוצא עבודה כמורה לאנגלית בבית ספר.
הוא פוגש את מנהלת בית הספר, רווקה, שעושה מאמצים להתחבב עליו. אבל כמי שהפרוטה אינה מצוייה בכיסו, הוא ממוקד בפרנסה ופחות בחיזוריה של המנהלת.
בבית הספר הוא פוגש את פרנסס, מורה לתחרה ענייה שמשפחתה המצומצמת כוללת רק את דודתה.
הוא מציע ללמד אותה אנגלית ואט אט הוא נופל בקסמה ומתאהב בה.
המנהלת, שאינה אוהבת את הסיטואציה, מנסה להרחיק בין ויליאם לפרנסס, אבל הוא לקה בקדחת אהבה, עוזב את בית הספר ואת משרתו ויוצא לחפש אותה בבריסל.
ויליאם ופרנסס יעברו עוד מספר מהמורות עד שהקשר בינהם יצלח והם יקימו משפחה ובסך הכל, מדובר בעלילה די מינורית. היא אינה מסעירה ואין בה גילויים או תהפוכות. גם החלק שבו המורה משתגע מהיעלמה של פרנסס, לא מסעיר במיוחד.
השפה של ברונטה עשירה, אבל אין בכך די בכדי להפוך את הספר למעניין ואת העלילה למרתקת.
הקשבתי לביצוע האודיו בעברית. הקריין היה סביר עד שנאלץ לקריין משפטים בצרפתית.לא מבינה למה לא לקחת קריין שמכיר את השפה הצרפתית על בוריה. הקריין הזה ממש שבר את שיניו. נשמע כאילו הוא גורס חצץ. בחלק שבו ויליאם ופרנסס מתוודעים אחד לשני בבית הספר, ישנם הרבה משפטים שנותרו לא מתורגמים אלא בהערת שולים או בגוף הטקסט, והקריינות מגומגמת ומקוטעת.
סה"כ חוויה די מפוקפקת, להקשיב לספר לא מעניין בקריינות מקרטעת.

I recently read The Professor, the first story written by Charlotte Brontë. However, I found it challenging to finish Jane Eyre and enjoyed The Dark Heights Moan more.
The story revolves around William Crimsworth, a member of an aristocratic family who grows weary of his life in England and his degrading job under his brother's supervision. Seeking a fresh start, William travels to Belgium, where he secures a position as an English teacher at a local school. He encounters the school's principal, a single woman, who tries to win his heart. However, with no wealth to his name, William is more concerned with earning a living than pursuing romantic interests.
While attending school, William crosses paths with Frances, a lace teacher from a humble background who lives with her aunt. He kindly offers to teach her English and gradually becomes mesmerized by her charm, eventually falling head over heels in love with her. Unfortunately, the headmistress disapproves of their relationship and tries to keep them apart. Nevertheless, William's passion for Frances is unwavering, prompting him to abandon his education and job to search for her in Brussels.
William and Frances will face further challenges before their relationship flourishes and they begin a family. However, this plot aspect is relatively minor, lacking excitement and unexpected twists. Even the section where the teacher becomes unhinged due to Frances' absence fails to captivate.
Although Brontë's language is rich, it falls short of making the book truly interesting and the plot captivating.
I listened to an audio performance in E-vrit. The narrator did a decent job until it came to narrating sentences in French. It was frustrating to hear her struggle with the language instead of hiring someone fluent in French. The narrator's pronunciation was so poor it was painful to listen to. Additionally, several sentences in the text were left untranslated except for a footnote or in the body of the text, making the narration stuttered and fragmented. This was especially noticeable in the part where William and Frances were getting to know each other at school.
Overall, the experience was questionable as the book was uninteresting, and the narration stuttered.
