Hawthorne & Horowitz #4

ื“ืฃ ื”ืกื™ื“ืจื” โ€“

Previous books in the series were excellent reads. Hurwitz is a talented writer, and the combination of Hurwitz and Hawthorne was fantastic.

In the fourth book of the series, Anthony Hurwitz is wrapping up the writing of the second book. He decides not to extend his deal with Hawthorne and instead focuses on staging a play he has written. The play receives positive feedback after being performed in English country towns. Anthony becomes so proud of the playโ€™s success that he almost forgets about Hawthorne.

The play makes its way to London, and the day following its opening night, the renowned cultural critic Margaret Throsby is murdered. Before her death, she had published a scathing review of the play and its author, which inevitably drew attention to Horwitz, but not in a favorable light.

The day after the big opening night, Anthony Hurwitz wakes up unwell because of his headache. He can still remember the end of the exclusive party when suddenly he gets a call from Inspector Grandshow, who accuses him of being involved in Throsbyโ€™s death.

After the police arrest him, he only calls his friend Hawthorne.

Hawthorne and Horvitz have four days to solve the mystery before the police take him into custody.

Unfortunately, this book is not of the same quality as the previous ones and did not give me the same level of enjoyment.

Although we learn more about the mysterious Hawthorne, the overall situation and plot development lack precision.

Horvitz goes into great detail about the play he is producing, called MindGame. However, these details are not particularly engaging, and as a result, the plot moves at a slow pace. Itโ€™s only after the murder takes place and Hawthorne is introduced that the story takes on a new direction and becomes more captivating and rhythmic.

The book has a positive aspect: the killerโ€™s identity is difficult to guess. Margaret Thoresby has skillfully crafted the characters, especially the character of the depraved visitor, who is archly evil. With each discovery of her past, the reader is led to conclude that she deserved to die.

The author intended to shed light on the living conditions of delinquent youth or youth at risk who spend their formative years in protected institutions until the age of 18, after which they are transferred to prisons. This message becomes even more evident in the final chapter of the book. Itโ€™s a noble cause, but unfortunately, the authorโ€™s plot is not strong enough.
