החלק השני בסידרת River Rain עוסק בקלואי פירס, בתם הבכורה של אימוג'ין ותום פירס. בחלק הראשון של הסידרה, After the climb , הדמות של קלואי היתה פשוט בלתי נסבלת. המניירות הקטנות של הילדה המפונקת והעשירה, המילים בצרפתית שהיא זרקה מידי פעם לאוויר. לא חשבתי שאקרא את הספר שעוסק בה.

אבל, הOCD עושה את שלו, וקראתי. ואני לא מצטערת כי בשליש האחרון של הספר, קריסטין אשלי כתבה סצנה יפיפיה ונוגעת ללב שעוסקת בתנאי חייו של ג'אג', שהיא היתה שווה את כל הקריאה.

קלואי פירס חזרה לארה"ב לאחר שבן זוגה הצרפתי מעל באמונה ביותר מדרך אחת. היא עוזבת את צרפת בלי לסובב את הראש לאחור ומקימה עסק קטן ואופנתי ולצידו ירגון התנדבותי שמסייע לנשים שתנאי חייהן קשים לעשות Make Over.

לאחר שסיימה לערבב ולהתערבב בחיי אימא שלה ובחיי דאנקן, היא מוצאת מטרות אחרות לערבב ולהתערבב בהן. כשהיא יוצאת לרכוש נעלי הליכה בחנות המרכזית של דאנקן, היא פוגשת את ג'אג'.

ג'אג' הוא כל מה שקלואי לא. הוא סלע של יציבות, שקול, מאוזן והוא מנהל את התוכנית ההתנדבותית של העסק, תוכנית שמפגישה בין ילדים ובין הטבע וקיימות.

המפגש של קלואי וג'אג' מעלה ניצוצות, אש ותימרות עשן ולאוו דווקא חיוביים מהסוג שמצפים לו.

הוא מעיר לה על המגפיים היקרים שהיא נועלת, היא פורצת בסערה דרמטית שממקדת בהם את תשומת לב כל הקונים בחנות וכנראה בעיירה. הוא מתנצל, אבל זה לא מספיק לקלואי פירס. היא נוטרת לו והמפגשים הבאים שלהם יהיו לאורם של המתיחות הזו.

ג'אג' הוא בן למשפחה דיספונקציונלית עשירה וידועה. הוא גדל עם אם אלכוהליסטית ובניתוק מאביו לכן היחסים עם אביו רעועים. קלואי לא יודעת את כל זה והיא גם לא טורחת לשאול. במבט ראשון הוא נמשך לקלואי, היא הטיפוס שלו, אבל אחרי המפגש שלו עם קלואי, הוא מבין את רמת התחזוקה שהיא דורשת.

ככל שהמפגשים בינהם מתרבים, כך המשיכה שלהם גדלה וכשקלואי מחליטה להתערב בחיי האהבה של אביה (הגרוש האומלל והסובל), היא מופתעת לגלות שתום ואימוג'ין עושים יד אחת לשדך לה את ג'אג', לצורך הקמת תוכנית בין מדינתית לקיימות וחינוך ילדים ונוער לשימור הטבע.

בין הפרקים, דמותו של קורי (ה"דוד" שהתאבד בספר הראשון) חוזרת להפציע ותמונות פלאשבקים ממפגשים שלו עם קלואי מנקדים את העלילה.

יש הרבה עיניינים משפחתיים לא פתורים בספר הזה, בעיקר בצד של קלואי. האחים שלה נמצאים בניתוק מאביהם, שסובל מהסיטואציה. קלואי מנסה לתקן את המצב ורק מחריפה אותו כאשר האחים שלה מנתקים את הקשר איתה. בסצנה הכי אכזרית בספר, אחותה מטיחה בקלואי מילים קשות לפני כלל המשפחה כאשר גם ג'אג' נוכח.

גם בצד של ג'אג' לא חסרים עיניינים משפחתיים, והסיפור שלו נוגע ללב וכתוב באמפתיה ועצב עמוקים.

מאידך, ההרגשה לאורך הספר שישנה גם יותר מידי התערבות משפחתית עד כדי מחנק.

סה"כ קריאה קולחת. הענקתי לספר חצי כוכב נוסף בגלל הסיפור של ג'אג' שהיה ממש חזק ומרגש.

The second installment of the River Rain series focuses on Chloe Pierce, the eldest daughter of Imogene and Tom Pierce. In the first part of the series, "After the Climb, "Chloe's character is insufferable. Her spoiled and wealthy behavior and use of French phrases made it difficult for me to enjoy her character. I never expected to read a book solely about her.

So, OCD tends to do what it does, and I had to read the second book. However, I don't regret it because, in the book's final third, Kristin Ashley has written an excellent and moving scene that deals with Judge's living conditions. It was worth reading the entire book just for that scene.

Chloe Pierce returned to the United States after her French partner violated her trust in several ways. She left France without looking back and started a small, fashionable business alongside a voluntary organization that provides makeovers to women facing difficult living conditions.

After dealing with her mother and Duncan's love life, she meets Judge while shopping for hiking boots at Duncan's Central Store.

Judge embodies stability and balance as he manages a volunteer program connecting children with nature and sustainability, whereas Chloe lacks these qualities.

Chloe and Jadj's encounter brings up sparks, fire smoke, and oaths. Not the kind of positivity that is expected.

He comments to her about the costly boots she is wearing, and she reacts with a dramatic outburst that draws the attention of all the shoppers in the store and possibly the town. He apologizes, but Chloe Pierce is not satisfied. Their tension remains palpable, and this incident will likely color their future encounters.

Judge comes from a rich and famous yet dysfunctional family. His mother had alcoholism, and he grew up separated from his father, resulting in an unstable relationship between them. Chloe is unaware of his family background and does not bother to ask or learn.

Chloe catches Judge's eye as she fits his preferred type. However, after their meeting, he realizes the high level of maintenance that she requires.

As they continue to meet, Chloe and Judge become increasingly attracted to each other. When Chloe decides to intervene in her father's love life, she is surprised to learn that Tom and Imogene are already working together to set him up with Judge. They aim to establish an interstate program for the sustainability and education of children and youth, focusing on nature conservation.

Throughout the story, flashbacks of Chloe's encounters with her deceased uncle Corey appear, connecting the episodes.

This book has several unresolved family issues, particularly on Chloe's side. Her siblings are estranged from their father, who is suffering due to the situation. Chloe takes it upon herself to try and resolve the problem, but her efforts only make it worse, leading to her brother cutting ties with her. In one of the most heart-wrenching scenes in the book, Chloe's sister lashes out at her in front of the entire family, with Judge also present.

There are a lot of family issues on Judge's side, too, and his story is touching and written with deep empathy and sadness.

On the other hand, It feels like family interference can sometimes become suffocating.

Overall, it was a fluid read. I gave the book an extra half-star due to Judge's story, which was incredibly powerful and moving.
