The Ten Teacups / Carter Dickson

The Ten Teacups / Carter Dickson

The Ten Teacups by Carter Dickson, the pen name of John Dickson Carr, started brilliantly for me. In fact, so brilliantly that I devoured almost half of it in one sitting. It has an impossible crime, an empty house, a mysterious message sent to the police in advance, ten teacups, a wealthy victim and an ever-growing list of people who are hiding something.

But the further the book progressed, the more momentum it lost.

The mystery disappeared into a forest of cleverness.

Two years before the main story begins, the police receive a strange anonymous message announcing that ten teacups will be found at a particular location. Soon afterward, a man is found shot dead in a room. Beside him are ten expensive teacups decorated with peacock feathers. The murder remains unsolved.

When a similar message arrives again, the police pay attention.

This time, they go to an empty house in Berwick Terrace and place it under surveillance.

Vance Keating, a wealthy and flamboyant adventurer, arrives at the house. A police officer is stationed outside the door of the room he occupies, while the window is also being watched.

A shot is heard.

Then another.

The door is forced open.

Keating is dead. The gun is beside him.

The murderer is nowhere to be found.

From this point, the novel begins to play with the reader, moving through a collection of apparently unrelated objects and a very strange murder-game party. Almost everyone involved offers a version of reality that is not exactly a lie, but not exactly the truth either.

This part works very well.

Sir Henry Merrivale, who takes charge of the investigation, focuses precisely on the details that appear insignificant. Why did Keating fail to attend a party he had been eagerly anticipating? Why did he leave the house wearing a hat that did not suit him? Who took the gun, and when? And why can several perfectly reasonable statements not all be true at the same time?

There is a constant feeling that something does not fit.

Even innocent objects become suspects. Teacups acquire an almost ritual significance, a hat becomes evidence, and pieces of furniture practically need to be interrogated like human beings.

Jeremy Derwent, the lawyer whose home and family repeatedly find themselves at the center of events, is one of the most successful characters in the novel. He is dry, intelligent, cynical and acutely aware of every word that leaves his mouth.

His wife Janet, on the other hand, is a theatrical creation who comes remarkably close to what we would now call a drama queen.

At a certain point, it feels as though Carr falls a little too much in love with his own cleverness.

The solution to the murder depends on intellectual acrobatics and a level of probability that only a very optimistic person would describe as “possible”.

The novel begins as a dark, strange, and extremely intriguing mystery. The middle still works reasonably well. But toward the end, it gradually replaces mystery with engineering, and engineering with acrobatics.

Carr undoubtedly had an extraordinary imagination. Even when his solution is not convincing, it is impossible to call him boring.

But in this case, I was far more fascinated by the question than by the answer.

A book that began brilliantly, continued well, and then increasingly lost me as it tried harder and harder to prove how clever it was.

Sometimes even a mystery needs to know when to put down the gun rather than throw it out the window.
