אהבתי במיוחד את הדרך שבה אגרטון עובד: מי ידע מה, למי הייתה גישה, ומתי כל פרט נכנס לתמונה. פרטים שנראים שוליים מפסיקים להיות שוליים.

יש גם כמה רמזים ממש יפים. קטנים, כמעט טכניים, מהסוג שמתגלה בדיעבד שהיה מול העיניים כל הזמן.

לקראת הסיום הספר הופך לעימות ישיר יותר, ונשאר יעיל ומדויק עד הסוף.

דווקא הדיוק הזה הוא מה שפחות עבד לי.

ההתחלה מבטיחה דרמה פסיכולוגית עשירה: אהבות ישנות, נישואים, כסף, קנאה, מעמד ופחד משערורייה. אחרי הרצח רוב המורכבות הזאת נדחקת הצידה. אותה עין לפרטים שהופכת את הרמזים למספקים כל כך משטיחה את האנשים שמאחוריהם.

לכן גם הסיום לא הכה בי. הפתרון הגיוני ומנומק, אבל שטוח. אין בו את הרגע שבו כל התמונה מתהפכת ואת חושבת: איך לא ראיתי את זה?

The Murder of Mrs Davenport הוא ספר תור זהב מוצלח מאוד, ונהניתי ממנו.גילברט פותרת את התעלומה עד הפרט האחרון. את האנשים היא משאירה באמצע.

The Murder of Mrs Davenport is a promising Golden Age mystery.

Sir Denis Brinsley is about to marry Lucille Tudor. He loves her. She is looking for security. Lucille herself is in love with another man, and Denis’s past returns in the form of Helen Davenport. Fourteen years earlier, Helen stood trial on suspicion of poisoning her husband. Now she is back, threatening to expose Denis’s past and trying to blackmail him.

Soon afterward, she is murdered.

The evidence against Denis begins to accumulate. A bus ticket in his coat. Blackmail letters. An alibi that starts to fall apart.

Anthony Gilbert, the pen name of Lucy Beatrice Malleson, constructs the case against him very cleverly. Each detail seems small and harmless on its own. Together, they create a picture that is hard to argue with.

Scott Egerton, the young lawyer who serves as Gilbert’s detective in her early books, believes that someone deliberately constructed that picture and begins taking it apart.

I especially liked the way Egerton works: who knew what, who had access, and when each piece of evidence entered the story. Details that initially seem insignificant stop being insignificant.

The novel also includes several very nice clues. Small, almost technical details that turn out, in hindsight, to have been sitting in plain sight all along.

Toward the end, the novel becomes more direct in its confrontation and remains efficient and precise right through to the solution.

Oddly enough, that precision is also what worked less well for me.

The opening promises a rich psychological drama: old loves, marriage, money, jealousy, class and fear of scandal. Once the murder occurs, most of that complexity is pushed aside. The same attention to detail that makes the clues so satisfying also flattens the people behind them.

That is why the ending did not hit me particularly hard. The solution is logical and well reasoned, but emotionally flat. It lacks that moment when the entire picture suddenly turns over, and you think: how did I not see that?

The Murder of Mrs Davenport is a very successful Golden Age mystery, and I enjoyed it.

Gilbert solves the mystery down to the final detail.

She leaves the people unfinished.
