Paradeโ€™s End #1

Some Do Not is the first volume in the quartet that makes up the โ€œParadeโ€™s Endโ€ series. I have not yet read the entire series. Still, I assume that, as it is called, it describes the end of an era accompanied by social and economic disintegration, the decline of the old aristocracy and elites, and the rise of a class of new riches.

The periodical description is based, among other things, on Christopher Tietjensโ€™s description of his relationship with his wife, Slaviya, and the world around him.

The book takes place in the years before the First World War. Christopher Tietjens, the owner of the brilliant brain, works as a statistician in the governmentโ€™s Central Bureau of Statistics. He is an advocate and great believer in the old order, even when that order crumbles before his eyes.

Tietjens, a symbol of the old, feudal, and privileged concepts, remains quiet and modest, speaking only a few words. His adherence to the principles of his old life is unwavering. Still, he cannot ignore the disintegration of the societal structures he once held dear- the church, marriage, bank, army, voting, and family. As these pillars of society crumble, Tietjens is left in a silent, lonely landscape, his principles the only thing left standing.

His beautiful, manipulative, destructive, repulsive, and treacherous wife, Salviya, left him for her lover. After four months, she gets bored and asks to return to their family. Christopher, a representative of the old school, accepts her behavior with due submission. Most evilly, she returns to live with him because she has no choice; she is Catholic and cannot get a divorce, a fact that weighs heavily on her in a society that values the sanctity of marriage above all else.

The more submissive and obedient the Tietjens are, the more Slaviya hits him. Tietjens becomes her punching bag, and she makes his life hell and his decision to stay married to her a disaster.

During a golf game, the Tietjens meet Valentine Vanup. She is a liberal and educated suffragist. During a trip together, they fall in love.

In the bookโ€™s second part, the disintegration process reaches its peak. In 1917, Tietjens, who fought at the front in World War I, returns to battle when, following a head injury, his memory is shattered. He was always a quiet person, not much of a talker, but now, he struggles to form a complete sentence, even the words he wants to say, which evokes a sense of frustration and helplessness in the readers.

As the world fractures and disintegrates, Tietjens steadfastly clings to his noble principles as if they were a lifeline. In stark contrast, his wife, Salviya, continues to rebel and undermine him. Tietjens endures his unbearable silence, unable to voice his frustration as the world order crumbles.

At the end of the book, Christopher Tietjens is sent back to the front of France to almost certain death.

Christopher emerges as a tragic figure, failing to grasp the seismic shifts of a world in flux and steadfastly clinging to his moral compass. The author presents a cast of characters that underscore his innocence and unwavering faith in the old order, inviting readers to empathize with his plight.

Some Do Notโ€ฆ is a richly complex narrative with nuanced characters and profound messages. Its second part, in particular, presents a challenging read, delving into many themes. The book explores the tensions between the old and the new, ultimately leading to the social and ideological rift, and is thought-provoking and compelling, keeping readers engaged and interested.

Reading Some Do Notโ€ฆ is undeniably challenging. As I navigate its intricate narrative and complex characters, I question whether I can continue to the subsequent volumes. Perhaps when the dust settles, I will find the courage to delve deeper into this compelling series.
