ג’ורג’י שוב מחוסרת עבודה. היא מחוסרת כסף, או מקצוע והדבר היחידי שעולה בדעתה הוא לפרסם הודעה בעיתונות ולהציע את שירותיה כבת לוויה. כמקובל בחברה הגבוהה, ג’ורג’י התכוונה להיות בת לוויה לארוחות ערב והצגות תיאטרון, אבל הלקוח הראשון שלה מפרש את המושג בת לוויה בצורה מפוקפקת והניסיון של ג’ורג’י מסתיים בתוצאות הרות אסון.

כדי להימנע משערורייה, היא חוזרת לתקופת צינון בטירת רנוך בסקוטלנד. לא יזיק לה קצת זמן עם אחיה, בינקי, חסר חוט שדרה, עם גיסתה המפלצתית, פיג, בכל זאת במטבח שלהם יש אוכל וזו הזדמנות לפגוש את חבריה משכבר הימים. באותה הזדמנות היא נענית לבקשתה של המלכה ויקטוריה, שמבקשת ממנה לסכל את מזימתה של אמריקאית גרושה (וואליס סימפסון) שמנסה לפתות את הנסיך מווילס.

במקביל הסקוטלנד יארד מבקש את עזרתה במשימה סודית – לפקוח עין על מסיבת הצייד בבלמורל. בתקופה האחרונה סדרת “תאונות” מסתוריות פוגעות ביורשים לכתר. הסקוטלנד יארד חושש שמישהו ירה בנסיך ושולח את ג’ורג’י לפקוח עין.

בזמן שג’ורג’י משתדלת למלא אחר המשימות שהוטלו עליה, היא מהרהרת בדארסי, ששוב נעלם מבלי להראות שום סימן ומתאפקת לא לחנוק את גיסתה פיג, שמציקה לה בלי סוף כדי שתסכים להצעת נישואין שקיבלה ודחתה.

התעלומה בספר הזה קצת תלושה, אבל הרקע ההיסטורי מרתק.

ריס בואן עשתה מחקר היסטורי מעמיק על משפחת המלוכה. במיוחד בכל הנוגע לנכדה הבכור של המלכה ויקטוריה, הנסיך אלברט ויקטור (המכונה אדי). לאורך חייו הנסיך אלברט  סבל משמועות על שפיותו ונטייתו המינית.

הקורא זוכה לראות צד נוסף במערכת היחסים בין אדוארד ה- 8, הנסיך מוויילס וגברת וואליס סימפסון , עוד טרם נישאו. בספר הזה, וואליס סימפסון חייה בבריטניה ועל תקן פילגשו של אדוארד. היא עדין נשואה לבעלה, ארנסט אולדריץ’ סימפסון, ושניהם מסתובבים בחוגי האצולה הבריטית.

בואן מציירת את וואליס סימפסון כאישה וולגרית, רעשנית, דומיננטית, שתלטנית וחסרת רגישות על סף גסת רוח. אולי הייתה כזו ויתכן שבואן מציירת אותה כך באופן בלתי הוגן.

בספר אין התייחסות לנטיות הנאציות של אדוארד ה- 8 וליחסיהם של בני הזוג עם בכירי הממשל הנאצי.

בנוסף, מערכת היחסים בין דארסי (כשהוא כבר מופיע על הבמה) וג’ורג’י מתחממת.

למרות שהתעלומות בסדרה הזו צולעות ותלושות, אני אוהבת לקרוא את הספרים בסדרה. הדמות של ג’ורג’י ממש טובה. היא שנונה ומקסימה. הדמויות המשניות גם הן בנויות היטב, במיוחד פיג, גיסתה של ג’ורג’י. הדבר שמרים במיוחד את הסדרה הוא התחקיר ההיסטורי והשילוב של פרטי המידע בעלילה – מה שמקנה לספר חוויה ריאליסטית ואוויר פסגות של בני מלוכה (שלפעמים נופלים מגן העדן שלהם ארצה).

In high society, it was common for companions to accompany people to dinner parties and theater performances. However, her first client misunderstood the term “companion,” leading to a disastrous outcome for Georgie.

She returns to Rannoch Castle in Scotland for a break to avoid a scandal. It would be good for her to spend time with her timid brother, Binky, and his unpleasant wife, Pig. Food is in their kitchen, and she can meet with her old friends. On that occasion, she responds to Queen Victoria’s request to thwart the plot of an American divorcee, Wallis Simpson, trying to seduce the Prince of Wales.

Scotland Yard has asked for her help in a secret mission – to keep an eye on the hunting party in Balmoral. In recent times, a series of mysterious “accidents” have harmed the heirs to the crown. Scotland Yard fears that someone has targeted the prince and sends Georgie to keep an eye out.

Georgie struggles to focus on her tasks while worrying about Darcy, who has disappeared again. She’s also feeling frustrated with her sister-in-law Fig, who keeps pressuring her to accept a marriage proposal that she has already declined.

The mystery in this book is a bit sketchy, but the historical background is captivating.

Rhys Bowen conducted extensive historical research on the royal family, mainly focusing on Queen Victoria’s eldest grandson, Prince Albert Victor (also known as Eddie). Throughout his life, Prince Albert Victor was plagued by rumors about his sanity and sexual orientation.

The reader can observe a different aspect of the relationship between Edward VIII, the Prince of Wales, and Mrs. Wallis Simpson before marriage. In this book, Wallis Simpson resides in Britain and is Edward’s mistress. She is still married to her husband, Ernest Aldrich Simpson, and they both socialize within the British aristocracy.

Bowen depicts Wallis Simpson as a loud, overbearing, and insensitive woman who borders on vulgarity. Bowen may have unfairly painted her.

In the book, there is no mention of Edward VIII’s Nazi tendencies or the couple’s ties to senior members of the Nazi government.

In addition, Darcy and Georgie’s relationship intensifies once he appears on stage.

Although the mysteries in this series may not be the best, I still enjoy reading them. I really like Georgie’s character—she’s witty and charming. The supporting characters are also well-developed, especially Fig, Georgie’s sister-in-law. What sets the series apart is the historical investigation and the incorporation of historical details into the plot, which makes the book feel more realistic and gives it a regal vibe.
