A Murderous Ride מאת הלנה מארצ'מונט הוא הספר השני בסידרת באנברי. כמו בספר הראשון גם הספר הזה קליל ומענג. הפעם תעלומת המסתורין מתרחשת במהלך מירוץ מכוניות מסורתי שמסתיים ברצח.
הדמות הראשית, אלפי מקאליסטר, כבר לא זר בעיירה, ובספר הזה אנחנו פוגשים אותו לאחר שהוא כבר התמקם ובנה לעצמו שגרה יחסית שקטה. אלפי מגלה שדודתו הורישה לו מכונית עתיקה. הוא מתלבט אם לתקן אותה ומחליט בעד. אבל, כשמתרחש רצח במהלך מירוץ מכוניות, והחשד נופל על אלפי ומכוניתו, הוא שוב מוצא את עצמו בעמדת הבלש. השקט הפסטורלי של העיירה מתערער, ואלפי נאלץ להעמיק בחקירה, לא מעט בזכות חברותיה של דודתו, ליז ומארג', שמספקות את הצד ההומוריסטי והחקרני של הסיפור.
בנוסף, במהלך הספר אנחנו מעמיקים בהיכרות עם נסיבות חייו של אלפי. הסיבות לעזיבתו את לונדון נחשפות לצד הטרגדיות המשפחתיות שמלוות אותו מאז שהיה צעיר. העמקת ההיכרות עם אלפי מחזקת את הקשר שבין הקורא לדמות הראשית ומאפשרת לנו להבין את המניעים הפנימיים שלו – בין אם מדובר בקשיים אישיים או בהחלטות שהובילו אותו להתמקם בעיירה באנברי.
הכימיה בין הדמויות שבספר שובת לב. לצד אלפי, דמות מהורהרת, צנועה וענווה מופיעות גם בספר הזה ליז ומארג', שמהוות את הלב ההומוריסטי של העלילה. השיחות המשעשעות והחטטניות בין ליז ומארג' מאירות את הדמויות השונות בעיירה. אלפי, גבר ביישן ושקט, מהווה את הקונטרסט המושלם לצמד הנשים, והדינמיקה ביניהם מעניקה לסיפור את המתח הרגשי לצד קלילות משעשעת.
מאחר שהספר השני הוא רק 108 עמודים, והוא באותו הסט של דמויות ואווירה כפרית, לדעתי היה ניתן לאחד את הספר הראשון והשני לספר אחד עם שתי פרשיות שמתנהלות במקביל.
לסיכום, A Murderous Ride הוא המשך מוצלח לסדרה, ששומר על הומור, תחכום ומתח קליל. הספר הזה לא רק מציע חקירה מסקרנת, אלא גם מצליח להעמיק את הדמויות והעולם שבנה מארצ'מונט. סיפור נוסף בעיירה הקטנה שמזמין את הקורא להמשיך ולגלות את סודותיה, ומבטיח שכאשר אנחנו חושבים שהרצח נפתר – החיים בבאנברי עוד יביאו הפתעות חדשות.

A Murderous Ride by Helena Marchmont is the second book in the Bunburry series. Like the first book, this one is light-hearted and enjoyable. This time, the mystery occurs during a traditional car race that ends in murder.
The main character, Alfie McAllister, is no longer a stranger in the village, and in this book, we meet him after he's settled in and built a relatively peaceful routine. Alfie discovers that his aunt has left him an antique car. He debates whether to restore it and ultimately decides in favor. However, when a murder occurs during the car race, and suspicion falls on Alfie and his car, he once again finds himself in the role of detective. The pastoral tranquility of the village is disrupted, and Alfie must dig deeper into the investigation, thanks in no small part to his aunt’s friends, Liz and Marge, who bring humor and a keen investigative spirit to the story.
Additionally, throughout the book, we get a deeper understanding of Alfie's backstory. The reasons behind his departure from London are revealed, alongside the family tragedies that have haunted him since he was young. This deeper look into Alfie’s life strengthens the connection between the reader and the main character, allowing us to understand his inner motivations, whether it's personal struggles or decisions that led him to settle in the village of Bunburry.
The chemistry between the characters in the book is delightful. Alongside Alfie, a thoughtful, modest, and humble man, we also find Liz and Marge, who provide the humorous heart of the plot. The amusing and nosy conversations between Liz and Marge shine a light on the various characters in the village. Alfie, a shy and quiet man, is the perfect contrast to the two women, and the dynamic between them adds emotional tension while maintaining a light, enjoyable tone.
Since the second book is only 108 pages and shares the same characters and village atmosphere, I think it could have been combined with the first book into one novel, with two parallel mysteries.
In conclusion, A Murderous Ride successfully continues the series, maintaining humor, wit, and light suspense. This book offers an intriguing investigation and deepens the characters and the world that Marchmont has built. It is another story set in the small village that invites readers to continue uncovering its secrets, promising that once we think the murder is solved, life in Bunburry will bring new surprises.
