קראתי כמעט את כל הספרים של הסופרת. כל ספר שלה הוא חגיגה לנפש ולאינטליגנציה. היא משתמשת באמצעים ספרותיים במומחיות כדי לייצר תחושה אותנטית תוך שהיא משלבת קולות ממקורות שונים כדי לספק לקורא חוויה של דמויות עגולות ואנושיות. היא גם מאפשרת לדמויות שהיא יוצרת לזלוג בין הספרים שלה, כך שמי שקורא את ספריה זוכה להכיר אותן לעומק, לפתח איתן יחסי אהבה/ שנאה וגם להיקשר אליהן :

הדמות של קארי סוטו הופיעה לראשונה בספר Malibu Rising. בעיניי, היא היתה דמות בלתי נסבלת ולכן במשך שנתיים הספר המתין לי ונמנעתי מקריאתו בגלל התחושות הקשות שלי כלפיה.

קארי סוטו, הטניסאית הגדולה בכל הזמנים, נאלצה לפרוש מהטניס בשל פגיעה בברכיים. היא בת 37 ולא שיחקה ב- 5 שנים האחרונות. היא דווקא מתפרנסת יפה מחסויות ומתהילת העבר. בעיקר הודות לזיכרון הקצר של הציבור ששכח עד כמה ההתנהגות שלה היתה בלתי נסבלת.

עתה, היא יושבת עם אביה חוויאר, באליפות ארצות הברית הפתוחה ורואה כיצד בחורה צעירה ומוכשרת עומדת לגזול ממנה את ההישגים שלצורך השגתם הקדישה את חייה.

קארי סוטו מחליטה לנער את האבק ממחבט הטניס שלה ולחזור למשחק. היא תשמור על מעמדה והתארים שלה ותצטרף לארבע תחרויות הפתוחות של הגראנד סלאם.

המשימה אינה פשוטה כפי שהיא נראית.

אביה, חוויאר, שאימן אותה מגיל צעיר מאוד, חולה. גם כך עליהם להתגבר על הפערים ביניהם לאחר שקארי החליטה בשלב מסויים לעבור למאמן אחר. מערכת היחסים בין חוויאר וקארי כתובה חזק ומעבירה את המורכבות שבין אב יחידני לבתו.

חוויאר, טניסאי מצליח בעצמו, איבד את אישתו האהובה כשקארי היתה צעירה. הוא מגדל את קארי מתוך אמון מלא ביכולות שלה ומחנך אותה לפרפקציוניזם והישגיות. החינוך שלו אומנם נוקשה ומציב גבולות, אבל בו זמנית אוהב ועוטף. חוויאר הוא דמות לקחת. אחת הדמויות הטובות שהסופרת יצרה.

קארי עצמה לא זכרה עד כמה שדרני הספורט והאוהדים נרתעו מההתנהגות והתחרותיות הבלתי מתפשרת שלה. כמעט ואין קולות שמסנגרים עליה. הכינוי שהדביקו לה “גרזן הקרב” הוא בו זמנית מחמאה וגינוי על שאינה מסוגלת להיות אמפטית ליריבות שלה.

בתהליך, הסופרת מתארת את האפליה המובנית שממנה סובלות נשים בספורט (ובכלל גם בעולם הדוגמנות) כאשר הגיל מהווה מכשלה כפולה: מצד אחד הוא מקור ללעג וזלזול, העדר אמון ביכולות שלה מצד הקהל והשדרנים. מצד שני הוא מכשול פסיכולוגי שהיא צריכה להתמודד איתו ובעיקר להפנים שהיא כבר לא בחורה בת 20 והגוף שלה גם אם הוא מכונה משומנת, דורש התאמות בסגנון המשחק. 

למרות שיש בספר הרבה טניס (גם מושגים מעולם הטניס שאני לא מכירה), הספר עצמו לא עוסק בטניס. הוא עוסק במחירים שמשלמות נשים ספורטאיות, במחירים של הפרפקציוניזם, בהשלמה וצמיחה. 

נושא של הסטנדרט הכפול והדעות הקדומות ביחס לנשים בספורט בניגוד ליחס להם זוכים הגברים תופס חלק נרחב בספר והוא בא לידי ביטוי במגוון של צורות. קארי סוטו זוכה ליחס מזלזל וסקסיסטי מצד השדרנים הגברים. אחד השדרנים מכנה אותה בשידור חיי בטלביזיה הארצית ‘כלבה’. למרות שהוא עושה זאת בלי מודעות לכך שהמיקרופון פתוח, הוא לא מתנצל והכינוי נדבק אליה.

למרות שנרתעתי מהדמות של קארי סוטו, הספר פשוט מצויין ומשלב בין מתח (האם קארי תנצח?) רומנטיקה ויחסי הורים וילדים באופן מושלם.

I’ve read nearly all of the author’s books. Each one is a celebration of the soul and intellect. She skillfully employs literary devices to evoke genuine emotions while merging voices from various sources to offer readers an enriching experience with well-rounded, human characters. She also allows her characters to transition between her books, enabling readers to get to know them deeply, form love/hate relationships, and develop attachments to them: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Daisy Jones & The Six, Maybe in Another Life, Forever, Interrupted

I have two books by the author that I have yet to read, and a new book is expected to be released in June 2025 (hip hip hooray!).

The character Carrie Soto first appeared in Malibu Rising. She was an unbearable character, and for two years, the book waited as I avoided reading it because of my strong feelings toward her.

Carrie Soto, the greatest tennis player of all time, was forced to retire due to knee injuries. She’s 37 and hasn’t played in the last five years. She makes a good living from sponsorships and past glory, mainly thanks to the public’s short memory, which forgot how unbearable her behavior was.

Now, she sits with her father, Javier, at the U.S. Open, watching as a young, talented girl is poised to claim the achievements to which she devoted her life.

Carrie Soto dusts off her tennis racket and returns to the game. She will protect her status and titles and participate in all four Grand Slam Open tournaments.

The task isn’t as simple as it seems.

Her father, Javier, who has coached her since she was young, is ill. After Carrie decides to switch coaches, they must reconcile their differences. Javier and Carrie’s relationship is beautifully portrayed and reflects the complexity of a single father and his daughter.

Javier, a successful tennis player, lost his beloved wife when Carrie was young. He raises Carrie with complete faith in her abilities and educates her toward perfection and achievement. His parenting style is strict, setting boundaries while loving and nurturing. Javier is a memorable character—one of the author’s finest creations.

Carrie didn’t recall how much sports broadcasters and fans recoiled from her uncompromising behavior and competitiveness. There are nearly no voices defending her. Her nickname, “Battle Ax,” is a compliment and a condemnation of her inability to empathize with her opponents.

In the process, the author examines the inherent discrimination women face in sports (as well as in the modeling industry), where age poses a dual challenge. On the one hand, it becomes a source of mockery and dismissal, undermining their confidence in the abilities of the audience and broadcasters. On the other hand, it creates a psychological barrier that she must confront, primarily coming to terms with the fact that she is no longer 20 years old and that her body, even if it functions like a finely tuned machine, requires adjustments in playing style.

While the book covers a lot of tennis (including terms I’m not familiar with), it’s not solely about tennis. It addresses the prices female athletes pay and the costs of perfectionism, acceptance, and growth.

The issue of double standards and biases against women in sports compared to the treatment men receive occupies a significant portion of the book and is illustrated in various ways. Carrie Soto faces dismissive and sexist attitudes from male broadcasters. One broadcaster refers to her as a ‘bitch’ during a live national television broadcast. Although unaware that the microphone is on, he does not apologize, and the derogatory nickname endures.

Although I initially disliked Carrie Soto’s character, the book is outstanding and perfectly combines tension (will Carrie win?), romance, and parent-child relationships.
