Maybe in Another Life is a novel that moves between two possible lives, two paths, and one love that never quite lets go. Hannah finds herself at a crossroads where fate and emotion seem to compete over the outcome.
When Hannah was sixteen and her parents moved to London, she stayed behind in Los Angeles and lived with her best friend Gabby Hudson and Gabby’s family.
She later went to college, moved through six different cities in several states, and changed jobs repeatedly, only to return to Los Angeles at twenty-nine and move in with Gabby and her husband. Hannah’s life is a complete mess, and she has reached a point where she needs to decide what she wants and how to move forward.
Then they go out one night, and Hannah runs into her high school boyfriend, Ethan Hanover.
Ethan was the only person she ever considered her true love. She always believed they would somehow find their way back to each other, and when Ethan asks her to stay with him that night, Hannah faces two choices: leave with Gabby and her husband, or stay with Ethan. From that moment, the story divides into two separate timelines, each following the life that grows out of that decision.
It is a delightful, well-written novel. The two storylines are clearly distinguished, even though some events occur in both and feel almost inevitable.
Hannah and Gabby's friendship is warm and moving. Their loyalty to each other says a great deal about life and about the people we choose to keep close.
I loved every moment of the book. Taylor Jenkins Reid is enormously talented, and this was the second book of hers I had read and thoroughly enjoyed. She has a real gift for telling a good story without exhausting the reader, and for giving that story a satisfying emotional payoff.
Maybe in Another Life is a book about the small missed chances that shape us, and about the way life sometimes gives us another opportunity — just not always at the same moment.
