אם בספר הראשון בסדרת Murder Will Follow Mystery הכול היה חד וברור, הספר השני, Honeymoon with Death, מתעקש על ערפל. לא ערפל חכם של מתח פסיכולוגי מוצלח, אלא ערפל כשיטה: ניסיון לבדוק כמה רחוק הקורא יסכים ללכת בלי עוגן של אמינות.
הכול מתחיל בתבנית הקלאסית של “חתונה בזק”. דמאריס, כעת גברת ראמספורת’, יוצאת לירח דבש באי יווני, אבל הסדקים מופיעים מיד. היא מוצפת בתחושת דז’ה־וו מטרידה, כאילו ביקרה שם פעם, למרות שמעולם לא דרכה ביוון. זה יכול היה להיות פתיח מצוין לרומן שמפרק תודעה, במיוחד כשהבעל נכנס לתמונה והספר מציע גזלייטינג ככוח מניע. הוא מתנהג כאילו תפקידו לערער אותה, להקטין ולהאשים לסירוגין. הבעיה היא שהספר לא בונה באמת את הגבול בין מציאות להזיה, הוא פשוט מזיז אותו לפי צרכי הסצנה.
המכשלה המרכזית היא התלישות. כמעט חצי ספר עובר בתחושה של רעש לבן. שאלות בסיסיות על המניעים של הבעל נשארות תלויות באוויר. דמויות משנה נוחתות על האי כאילו נכנסו בטעות מהספר הלא נכון. סימבוליזם של גולגלות וחיפושיות מודבק לטקסט במקום היגיון עלילתי. ובדיוק כשהסיפור עוד לא מספיק להתייצב, צצים פתרונות נוחים מדי, כמו ירושה פתאומית. זו לא פרנויה שנבנית בזהירות, אלא עלילה שמריצה התרעות כדי להסוות את העובדה שאין לה בסיס מוצק.
כצפוי, הערפל הופך לצעקה. דמאריס מתעוררת כשהיא עומדת מעל גופה, בלי מושג איך הגיעה לשם. זה הרגע שבו הספר אמור להתהדק. בפועל, התלישות נשארת שיטה, ולא הופכת למצב נפשי משכנע.
המפקח ג’ספר, שנמצא שם במקרה כעובר אורח בחופשה, הוא העוגן היחיד בתוך ים הבלבול. הוא אמנם חופר בעברה ומגלה פרשיית רצח ישנה, אבל גם ההיגיון שמוביל לפתרון מרגיש מוזר במקום חד.
Honeymoon with Death דורש מהקורא לעבוד קשה מדי בשביל תגמול שהספר לא מרוויח. הוא אולי מנסה לגרום לנו לפקפק בדמאריס, אבל בפועל הוא בעיקר גורם לנו לפקפק בסופרת. מי שמחפש מותחן מהודק יקבל כאן בעיקר בלבול שמתחפש למסתורין.

If the first book in the Murder Will Follow Mystery series was sharp and clear, the second, Honeymoon with Death, insists on fog. Not the intelligent fog of a strong psychological thriller, but fog as a method: a test of how far a reader will go without any anchor of plausibility.
It begins with the classic “whirlwind wedding” setup. Damaris, now Mrs. Ramsforth, leaves for a honeymoon on a Greek island, but the cracks show immediately. She’s flooded with an unsettling sense of déjà vu, as if she’s been there before, even though she’s never set foot in Greece. This could have been a great opening for a novel that dismantles consciousness, especially once the husband enters the frame and the book hints at gaslighting as a driving force. He behaves as if his job is to destabilize her, belittle her, and accuse her in alternation. The problem is that the novel doesn’t actually build a tense border between reality and delusion. It simply moves the border wherever the scene needs it.
The core issue is disconnection. Nearly half the book passes in a haze of white noise. Basic questions about the husband’s motives hang in the air. Secondary characters drop onto the island as if they wandered in from the wrong book. Symbolism of skulls and beetles is imposed on the text in place of narrative logic. And just as the story is about to find its footing, convenient solutions appear out of nowhere, like a sudden inheritance. This isn’t paranoia assembled with care. It’s a plot firing off alarms to disguise the fact that it has no solid base.
Predictably, the fog eventually becomes a scream. Damaris wakes up standing over a body, with no idea how she got there. That is the moment when the novel should tighten. Instead, the disconnection remains a technique rather than turning into a convincing psychological state.
Inspector Jasper, conveniently present as a holidaying bystander, is the only anchor in the sea of confusion. He digs into Damaris’s past and uncovers an old murder case, but even the reasoning that leads to the solution feels strange rather than sharp.
Honeymoon with Death asks the reader to work far too hard for a payoff the book doesn’t earn. It may want us to doubt Damaris, but in practice, it mostly makes us doubt the author. If you’re looking for a tightly constructed mystery, what you’ll get here is mostly confusion dressed up as suspense.
