I read 10 Things I Hate About Christmas as part of a seasonal marathon of “vibe reads,” and it delivered exactly what it promised: a warm, light, and entertaining experience, like a Hallmark movie playing in the background while you curl up with a mug of hot cocoa.
The plot sticks to the familiar and the safe. Gemma and Theo are office rivals, and the fact that Theo is also the boss’s talented nephew adds a touch of workplace hierarchy to their friction. At its core, though, the story thrives on office banter and predictable sniping. The chaos begins when Gemma accidentally sends a highly inappropriate holiday gift to her uptight boss rather than her best friend. In a desperate attempt to save her career, she finds herself tagging along with Theo to his picturesque hometown of Tinsel, hoping to intercept the package before it’s opened.
Don’t expect surprises. From the very first page, it’s evident that Theo is in love with Gemma, and his half-hearted attempts to hide it barely register. Their professional rivalry is a fragile shell, and the road to the happy ending is brightly lit with Christmas lights from the start. There are no emotional twists and no real moments of doubt.
But honestly? That’s precisely the book’s charm. It leans fully into a familiar formula and executes it well. The atmosphere is genuinely delightful. The small-town setting, the family home, and the snow-covered roads are painted in warm, nostalgic tones. The humor works, too, especially during the road trip and family interactions, which offer a few genuinely funny moments that bring an easy smile to my face.
The book’s weakness is also its essence: the romantic dynamic. It isn’t complex, and it doesn’t attempt to subvert clichés. Readers looking for emotional depth or a challenging conflict have probably wandered into the wrong aisle. But anyone in the mood for one or two hours of sweet escapism, complete with an office romance and a sparkling Christmas town, will get exactly what they signed up for.
In the end, this is a cute, self-aware novel that doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes you don’t need an intellectual challenge, just a reminder of why you enjoy this genre in the first place. And that’s precisely what this book delivers.
