“עניין משפחתי” הספר האחרון שפירסם, עוסק בשוליים האפורים של הפשע.

אלון, בוגר 8200, מחליט לעזוב קריירת ההייטק מצליחה ולעבור יחד עם משפחתו לדימונה, שם הוא מתחיל קריירה שניה כמורה למחשבים. המהלך הזה מפרק את משפחתו ובתו הבוגרת אינה מדברת איתו. כשהוא חושד שהיא מתרועעת עם עבריין, הוא מתחיל לעקוב אחר הבחור, ואז לילה אחד כשהוא ממש על סיפו של הגילוי הגדול, המשטרה מתדפקת על דלתו.

לטעמי קראתי ספרי מתח יותר טובים שליעד שהם כתב.

בגלל אופן הכתיבה שלו, מעיניי הדמויות, הקורא מרגיש היטב את החורים בעלילה. חלק מהחורים מקבלים הסבר בדיעבד, אבל לרוב הרגשתי שההסבר צולע ולא מספק אותי. לא דיי בכך, ישנם חלקים בספר שפשוט נראו לי תלושים מהמציאות. הדמויות של שהם נרתמות לפנטזיה שהוא מפתח סביבן: אלון שמשחק בסוכן חשאי ועוקב אחרי אחד מהחיילים של משפחות הפשע, ואיריס, שמצליחה בשלב מסויים של הספר לגרום לכספומטים לירוק את כל כספם עליה ועל בן זוגה.

יחד עם זאת, הספר זרם לי וסיימתי אותו במספר שעות.

Liad Shoham specializes in writing thrillers that incorporate criminal and legal elements. I’ve read eight of his published books, and their quality ranges from very good to good.

His newest book, A Family Matter, explores the gray areas of crime.

Alon, a graduate of the 8200 unit, decides to leave his successful high-tech career and relocate with his family to Dimona, where he starts a second career as a computer teacher. This decision strains his family relationships, leading to his adult daughter ceasing communication with him. When he suspects she is involved with a criminal, he begins to follow the man, and one night, just as he is on the brink of a significant discovery, the police arrive at his door.

Iris is a single mother raising her son in Dimona. Despite being an 8200 graduate, she avoids technology as if it were fire. Although her son shows signs of natural talent for computers, she refuses to push him into that realm. A shadow hangs over Iris’s life—a secret that has followed her for years. In her youth, she struggled with a gambling addiction. This addiction brought her to the brink and resulted in debts of hundreds of thousands of shekels to criminal organizations.

Iris, after a traumatic event, decided to go off the grid. She insists on remaining disconnected from the world she once cherished and raising her only son modestly in a remote location.

In an instant, the lives of Alon and Iris intertwine, and Iris’s past returns to haunt her. Despite her fundamental opposition, Iris must ally with Alon to save her child from a harsh and cruel fate.

The plot shifts between Alon’s and Iris’s perspectives. In addition to the fast-paced sections, the book has reflective parts that explore themes of parenting and fate.

I believe I’ve read better thrillers by Liad Shoham.

Due to his writing style and the characters’ perspectives, the reader perceives the plot holes. Some of these holes are explained in retrospect, but I found the explanations mostly inadequate and unsatisfying. Additionally, certain parts of the book felt utterly detached from reality. Shoham’s characters are drawn into the fantasy he creates around them: Alon acts as a secret agent, tracking one of the soldiers from crime families, while Iris, at one point in the book, manages to make ATMs dispense all their cash for her and her partner.

Nevertheless, the book flowed easily, and I completed it in just a few hours.
