מוטיב הרוחות מתפקד בעיקר כעוד שלב שהקורא נדרש לעבור בדרך אל הפתרון. הוא אינו מפחיד במיוחד וגם אינו יוצר תחושה ממשית של אימה.
הסופר מעניק משקל גם לממד הפסיכולוגי. אית'ן הוא אדם שחייו נעצרו במידה רבה בלילה שבו בילי נעלם. הוא סובל מנדודי שינה, מתקשה לזכור חלקים מן האירוע וחוזר שוב ושוב אל השאלה אם היה יכול למנוע את מה שקרה. הרעיון מובן, אבל הטיפול בו אינו חזק במיוחד.

Middle of the Night / Riley Sager
Middle of the Night by Riley Sager begins with the disappearance of a child and continues with an investigation into the lives of those who were left behind.
In 1994, Ethan and Billy, two ten-year-old friends, sleep in a tent in Ethan’s backyard. During the night, someone cuts through the side of the tent. By morning, Billy is gone. Thirty years later, Ethan returns to his childhood home, to the neighborhood where he grew up and to the questions that were never answered.
Some chapters are told from the perspectives of different characters connected to the events of 1994. This structure gives the story a certain amount of depth because it allows the reader to view the same period through memories and versions that do not always agree with one another. On the other hand, it also stretches the mystery across more and more chapters, yet we still do not discover what happened.
The plot resembles the structure of a classic murder mystery. The suspects appear one after another and tell their stories. The difference is that in an Agatha Christie novel, each statement advances the investigation. Here, some of the chapters mostly lengthen the journey towards the solution.
Billy believed in ghosts. He was obsessed with ghost stories and with the woods near the neighborhood, and the novel uses this to introduce the possibility of something supernatural. There are noises at night, objects appearing in unexpected places, and the feeling that someone or something is trying to contact Ethan.
The ghost motif functions mainly as another stage the reader must pass through on the way to the solution. It is not especially frightening, nor does it create a genuine atmosphere of horror.
Sager also gives weight to the psychological dimension. Ethan is a man whose life largely stopped on the night Billy disappeared. He suffers from insomnia, cannot remember parts of the event, and repeatedly returns to the question of whether he could have prevented what happened. The idea is understandable, but its treatment is not especially strong.
Middle of the Night is a novel about a group of children, one of whom disappeared and never returned, and about the dynamic that developed between them before and after the disappearance. It deals with guilt, friendship, secrets, and how childhood memories change when we look back on them as adults.
In some parts of the book, I was more interested in what had happened to Ethan than in what had happened to Billy. That says something about the mystery that is supposed to stand at the center of the novel.
The book does not succeed as a gripping mystery, a psychological thriller, or a horror novel. It does not create the kind of tension that makes you turn one more page and then another, and it certainly offers no reason to lose sleep over it.
It can be read at a relaxed pace. It can also be put aside while you go to sleep.
For a book called Middle of the Night, there is a certain irony in that.
