Office Mate מאת נואל אדמס הוא הספר השני בסדרת Milford College, סדרה שבה כל ספר עוסק בזוג אחר מאנשי הסגל בקולג׳. זהו רומן קצר, חביב וקל לקריאה, המבוסס על מפגש בין שני אנשים שונים מאוד זה מזה, שנאלצים לחלוק מרחב ומגלים שהפער ביניהם אינו גדול כפי שנדמה בתחילה.
מה שצריך לדעת
הספר השני בסדרת Milford College מאת Noelle Adams. אוון, מרצה חדש לאנגלית, נאלץ לחלוק משרד עם בק החברותית והישירה, אף שהם שונים מאוד באופיים ובדרך שבה הם מתקשרים.
לקוראות שאוהבות רומנים קצרים, רומנטיקה במקום העבודה, גיבור מופנם ושקט, קרבה כפויה וסיפורים שאינם מעמיסים דרמות וסיבוכים מיותרים.
הפער בין האופי הישיר והסוער של בק לבין השקט והסגירות של אוון, והאופן שבו הם לומדים בהדרגה לפרש נכון זה את זו ולתקשר גם מחוץ למשיכה הגופנית.
אי־ההבנות ביניהם פשוטות וצפויות למדי, וחלק מן הרפרנסים לשר הטבעות עברו לידי. הספר גם נשען בתחילתו במידה רבה על המשיכה המינית ביניהם.
אוון מגיע למילפורד קולג׳ כדי לעבוד כמרצה לאנגלית ולהיות קרוב לאחותו. מאחר שאין עבורו חדר עבודה פנוי, הוא מצטרף לחדר של בק. היא חברותית, סוערת וישירה יותר ממנו. הוא אינטרוורט שקט, מנומס וסגור, שמתקשה לבטא במילים את מה שהוא מרגיש.
בק היא אישה נחמדה וסקסית, אך לפרקים סובלת מדימוי עצמי נמוך. אוון גדל כחנון שאהב ספרים וחי במידה רבה בשולי החברה. היחס של הוריו ושל אחיו אליו הותיר בו פגיעות עמוקה ותחושה שהוא תמיד פחות חשוב ופחות נראה. גם כאדם בוגר הוא רגיל להישאר בצללים, להתבונן יותר מאשר להשתתף, ולומר מעט מאוד.
המפגש ביניהם הוא כמעט מפגש בין שמים וארץ. בק קוראת את השתיקה של אוון כריחוק ולעיתים כחוסר עניין. הוא, מצדו, מתקשה להסביר את עצמו ונפגע מן האופן שבו היא מפרשת אותו. אי-ההבנות ביניהם אינן מורכבות במיוחד, הן נובעות מהאישיות שלהם.
היחסים ביניהם מתחילים בריחוק ועוברים למשיכה מינית. הספר אינו חוסך בסצנות סקס. בתחילה זהו הבסיס המרכזי שמאפשר להם להתקרב. בהמשך הקשר מקבל גם ממד אישי יותר. בק לומדת להבין שהשקט שלו אינו אדישות, ואוון מצליח בהדרגה לתקשר איתה גם מחוץ למיטה.
האהבה המשותפת שלהם לשר הטבעות מספקת להם שפה נוספת. מאחר שלא קראתי את שר הטבעות, חלק מן הרפרנסים עברו לידי ולא תמיד הבנתי את משמעותם המלאה. הם אינם הכרחיים להבנת העלילה, אך ברור שהם אמורים להעניק לקשר ביניהם ממד נוסף.
Office Mate לא איכזב אותי, הוא קריאה קלילה ומספקת בהתאם לז'אנר.

Office Mate by Noelle Adams is the second book in the Milford College series, in which each book focuses on a different couple from the college faculty and staff. It is a short, pleasant, and easy-to-read romance built around two people with very different personalities who are forced to share a space and gradually discover that the distance between them is not as great as it first appeared.
Owen comes to Milford College to work as an English professor and to be close to his sister. Since there is no vacant office available for him, he is assigned to share Beck’s. She is sociable, lively, and far more direct than he is. He is a quiet, polite, and reserved introvert who finds it difficult to put his feelings into words.
Beck is a kind and attractive woman, although she sometimes struggles with low self-esteem. Owen grew up as a bookish nerd who lived largely on the margins of social life. The way his parents and brother treated him left him with deep emotional wounds and the sense that he was always less important and less visible. Even as an adult, he is accustomed to remaining in the shadows, observing more than participating and saying very little.
Their meeting is almost a collision between heaven and earth. Beck interprets Owen’s silence as distance and sometimes as a lack of interest. He, meanwhile, finds it difficult to explain himself and is hurt by the way she interprets his behavior. The misunderstandings between them are not especially complicated. They arise from the difference between Beck’s directness and Owen’s difficulty expressing his emotions.
Their relationship begins with distance and develops into physical attraction. The book includes a considerable number of sex scenes, and at first this attraction is the main thing that allows them to grow closer. Later, the relationship develops a more personal dimension. Beck learns that his quietness is not indifference, while Owen gradually becomes able to communicate with her outside the bedroom as well.
Their shared love of The Lord of the Rings gives them another language through which to connect. Since I have not read The Lord of the Rings, some of the references passed me by, and I did not always understand their full significance. They are not essential to following the plot, but they are clearly intended to add another dimension to the relationship.
Office Mate did not disappoint me. It is a light, pleasant, and satisfying read that does what it promises within the conventions of the genre.
