הספר תורגם בזכות הסידרה הפופולארית בנטפליקס. ממש מזל שיש את נטפליקס כי אהבתי את הספר. פחות אהבתי את הסידרה שהפסקתי לצפות בה אחרי 3 פרקים מהעונה הראשונה.

סיפורה של מלינדה מונרו, מל, אחות מקצועית שבעלה נרצח בשוד מזויין בעיר לוס אנג'לס. היא זקוקה להתחלה חדשה, רחוק מהעיר הגדולה, רחוק מהלחץ בחדר המיון והטראומה שבו היא עובדת והכי חשוב רחוק מהזיכרונות. כאשר היא נתקלת במודעת דרושים שמבטיחה לה עבודה כאחות מיילדת בעיירה פסטורלית וציורית, וירג'ין ריבר ועוד מבטיחה לה מגורים בחינם בקוטג' כפרי יפיפה, היא לא מהססת.

העלילה מאוד אנושית ונעה בין סיפורים של תושבי העיירה וסיפור חייהם של מל וג'ק. הקורא חווה את התהדקות הקשרים בין השניים לצד אירועים שונים בחיי העיירה. בעיקר אירועים רפואיים שבהם נדרשת מיומנות של מל וסיוע של ג'ק (שהוא ממש אביר על סוס לבן, אי אפשר לתאר את זה אחרת).

אהבתי את עיצוב הדמויות, את קצב התקדמות העלילה ואת העובדה שהסופרת לא מנסה ליצור דמויות מושלמות.

למרות שהסוף היה צפויי, הקריאה בספר נעימה וטובה והסיפורים של תושבי העיירה חיממו לי את הלב בעיקר הקהילתיות שבהם.

את כל אלה מאוד קשה להעביר בסידרת טלביזיה ולכן כל כך התאכזבתי כשישבתי לצפות בה לאחר שסיימתי את הספר. כנראה כדי לתבל את העונה הראשונה, המפיקים בחרו לשלב בעונה הראשונה עלילות משנה מספרים אחרים בסידרה . לטעמי זה היה ממש לא נחוץ.

מיותר לציין ובכל זאת, אהבתי את הספר בכמה רמות מעל הסידרה. האופן שבו הסופרת יוצרת הזדמנויות שניות לגיבורים (הראשיים והמשניים) הוא משהו שהסידרה לא מצליחה להעביר.

חבל שההוצאה לא ממשיכה לתרגם את יתר הספרים בסידרה. אין ספק שאם יצא המשך אקרא אותו.

The book was translated thanks to the popularity of its Netflix adaptation. I was lucky to have watched the series because I enjoyed the book, but I stopped watching the show after the first season's third episode.

The story is about a professional nurse named Melinda Monroe, who lost her husband in an armed robbery in Los Angeles. She wants a fresh start, away from the stress of working in the emergency room and the traumatic memories. She comes across a job ad that offers her a midwife position in a beautiful, pastoral town called Virgin River. The position comes with free accommodation in a lovely country cottage, and she jumps at the opportunity.

The place felt like paradise. She left her job and headed to the Virgin River.

Mel found out that the Virgin River was nothing like she expected. The roads were very bumpy, there was no cell phone reception, and the cottage she was promised needed a thorough renovation and cleaning. To make matters worse, Doc Mullins, the doctor she was supposed to work for, wasn't interested in having a nurse.

Mel decides to leave the next day, but then she meets Jack and doubts her decision.

Jack, a retired Marine, runs the local pub and restaurant. He is determined to show Mel the good sides of town, but reality intervenes.

Upon arriving in Virgin River the following day, Mel discovers an abandoned infant on the doorstep of Doc Mullins' clinic. She decides to stay until he finds a suitable home for the baby.

As you may be aware, things intended to be temporary often become permanent in some way or another.

This is Jack's opportunity to persuade Mel to remain in town and demonstrate that things are not as bad as they appear.

The story revolves around the lives of the townspeople and the journey of Mel and Jack. The plot is very relatable and depicts the gradual bond between the two characters and various events occurring in the town. Most of these events are medical emergencies that require Mel's expertise and Jack's assistance. Jack is no less than a knight in shining armor, always there to help Mel whenever she needs him.

I enjoyed the character design, the plot's pacing, and the author's attempt to create flawed characters.

Although predictable, the book is a pleasant and heartwarming read, especially the communal stories of the town's residents.

Expressing all these emotions and details in a television show was very challenging. After completing the book, I was disappointed when I watched the adaptation. The show included subplots from other books in the first season, which I thought were unnecessary and did not add to the overall story.

I enjoyed the book much more than the series. The author's ability to offer second chances to both primary and secondary heroes is something that I wish the series would convey.

It's a pity the publisher won't translate the rest of the series. I'll read any sequels.
