למארקי לא היתה ברירה. היא היתה חייבת להתגרש מבעלה. לא די בכך שהיא סבלה מהשפלה פומבית כאשר בעלה צולם עם המאהבת שלו והתמונה התפרסמה ברשתות החברתיות. היא גם מגלה על החובות האדירים שהוא שקוע בהם לאחר שנכשל בכל עסקיו ופוטר מכל מקומות העבודה שעבד בהם.

מארקי נאלצת לוותר על הסטטוס החברתי והכלכלי שהתרגלה אליו, ולחזור לבית הוריה עם בנה המתבגר' ג'ס. אבל ההורים שלה לא מאפשרים לה את השקט והפרטיות הנדרשת להחלמה והשכנים והחברה הסקרנים ממשיכים לדחוף את האף שלהם כך שהיא עוברת עם בנה להתגורר בקוטג' קטן בעיר חדשה.

מארקי מקווה להתאושש כלכלית, למצוא עבודה וללקק את הפצעים בחברתו של מתבגר פצוע וכעוס.

בצמוד לביתה החדש מתגוררת גברת סיינט ; אישה זקנה, אירופאית, שתלטנית וחטטנית שמנסה לסייע למארקי ובנה תוך שהיא מתערבת בחייהם. לצד גב' סיינט מתאספת קבוצה המכונה "הפגומים", והם נרתמים לסייע אחד לשני.

אני לא בטוחה מה הרגשות שלי כלפי הספר – 

מהרבה בחינות היו בו דברים טובים: הדמויות היחודיות, הסיפורים שנוגעים ללב. 

הסיפור של מארקי נוגע ללב במיוחד האופן שבו היא מתאוששת בעזרת "הפגומים" וההתעקשות של גב' סיינט לא לוותר לה.

גם הדמות של גברת סיינט יחודית. צרפתיה, דעתנית שפולשת למרחב של מארקי כמעט בכח. מארקי מנסה לשים לה גבולות אולם היא עיקשת ואינה מוותרת. גם הסיפור האישי שלה מעניין.

אבל היו בו גם דברים בעייתיים.

גסות הרוח של מארקי וההתנהגות שלה כלפי גברת סיינט פשוט היו מעצבנים. היא שיפוטית אבל מאידך נוהגת בדיוק ההפך ממה שהיא דורשת מאחרים.

היא גם לא מעמידה את ג'סי על מקומו, גם כאשר הוא מתנהג כמו כל מתבגר מצויי.

גב' סיינט פשוט חוזרת לסורה ומנהלת את העולם מנקודת מבטה שהיא פשוט נקודת מבט ששולטת על כל הלך מחשבתה.היא בן אדם טוב אבל האופן שבו היא כופה על אחרים ומתערבת להם בחיים ממש לא היה טוב.

גם העלילה היתה בעייתית:

בצד של מארקי לא הצלחתי להבין את האגרסיביות כנגד אישה זקנה שמנסה לעזור לה והיתה מאוד נדיבה איתה ועם הבן שלה ומאידך, משמיעה קולות שטיח וסמרטוט ריצפה כשמדובר בבעלה הבוגדני והכושל שמצליח לאבד את כל כספם בעסקים כושלים. כן, גב' סיינט היתה פולשנית, שתלטנית ולא כיבדה את הבקשות של מארקי, אבל ההתנהגות של מארקי היתה מבזה.

בצד של גב' סיינט, היה ברור שיש שם סוד והסיפור הפרטי שלה היה מעניין. היא דמות מגוונת אבל הסופרת הלכה רחוק מידי עם הסיפור האישי שלה. הסיפור בתקופת מלחמת העולם ה 2 היה טוב, אחר כך הוא הולך ומתרופף ולבסוף היה מחורר ומפותל בלי צורך. לא היה ברור כיצד התגלגלו לידיה של גב' סיינט סכומי כסף אדירים שהיא יכולה להעסיק את כל הפגומים בעבודות מזדמנות ואף לכלכל אותם. לא היה ברור כל פיצול האישיות הזה שהיא לקתה בו. 

הסוף שהסופרת גזרה על גברת סיינט מיותר ואכזרי. הוא נועד לשרת את העלילה אבל היה אפשר להשיג את אותו האפקט גם בלי ההתעללות הזאת.

סה"כ לא סבלתי במהלך הקריאה, אבל היה בעלילה פוטנציאל רב שלא מומש בגלל היישום.

Markie was left with no other option but to file for divorce from her husband. The public humiliation she experienced when photos of her husband with his mistress surfaced on social media was not the only problem. She also discovered that he had accumulated a large amount of debt after failing in all of his businesses and being terminated from his jobs.

Markie is compelled to abandon her comfortable social and economic position and return to her parent's house with her teenage son, Jess. However, her parents do not provide her with the peace and privacy she requires to recover, and nosy neighbors and friends keep interfering, so she decides to move with her son to live in a small cottage in a new town.

Markie hopes to overcome her financial struggles while also caring for an angry and wounded teenager.

Mrs. Saint resides next to Markie's new house. She is an old, European woman who is quite dominating and nosy. She tries to help Markie and her son but also meddles in their lives. On the other side of Mrs. Saint, a group of individuals known as "the defective" gathers. They are a close-knit group who come together to help each other out in various ways.

I'm not sure how I feel about the book.

In many ways, the book has its strengths: unique characters and heartwarming stories.

Markie's story is heartwarming, particularly how she makes a recovery with the help of the "defective" and Mrs. Saint's determination to never give up on her.

Mrs. Saint's character is unique. She is French, opinionated, and invades Markie's space. Markie tries to set limits for her, but Mrs. Saint is stubborn and does not give up. Mrs. Saint's personal story is also interesting.

There were some issues with the characters :

Markie's behavior towards Mrs. Saint was rude and annoying. She is judgmental but hypocritical.

Even when Jesse acts like any normal teenager, she doesn't assert her authority.

Mrs. Saint insists on doing things her way, which dominates her entire thought process. Although she is a good person, her tendency to interfere in other people's lives and impose her views on them is not ideal.

The plot was also problematic:

On Markie's side, I couldn't understand why she was so aggressive towards an old woman who had been very generous to her and her son. Meanwhile, Markie made excuses and did not take any action regarding her unfaithful and failed husband who managed to lose all their money in failed businesses. Although Mrs. Saint was pushy, overbearing, and disrespectful of Markie's requests, Markie's behavior towards her was humiliating.

Mrs. Saint has a secret and an interesting personal story. She is a complex character, but the author may have gone overboard with her personal story. While the story set during World War 2 was good, it gradually became weaker and unnecessarily convoluted towards the end. It wasn't clear how Mrs. Saint obtained vast sums of money that enabled her to employ all the "defectives" in casual jobs and even finance them. Furthermore, it was unclear what the split personality she was suffering from entailed.

The author's decision to give Mrs. Saint an unnecessary and cruel ending was meant to serve the plot, but the same effect could have been achieved without this abuse.

Overall, I didn't suffer while reading the book, but the plot had a lot of potential that wasn't realized due to poor execution.
