הספר סיקרן אותי בגלל התוכן שעוסק באסירים במחנות העבודה והכפייה בברית המועצות וגם בגלל הסופר, שלא יצא לי לקרוא ספרים שפירסם, למרות שנחשב לסופר מהשורה הראשונה.
לצערי הספר לא מצליח להתרומם וככל שאני חושבת יותר, חבל שהוצאת אחוזת בית בחרה לתרגם את הספר הזה דווקא, שנראה כסוג של "לעבר ספרות מעורפלת" נראה כמה הקורא יבין ממנה.
זהו סיפורם של שני אחים שנאסרו והועברו למחנות הכפייה בתקופת הטיהורים הסטלניסטיים שלאחר מלחמת העולם השניה.
האח הבכור, חסר השם, שרד את התקופה, היגר לארה"ב, הפך לסוחר נשק, התעשר וכשהוא עשיר ובן 90, חוזר אל המחנה ומתעד את זיכרונותיו מהתקופה במכתב הממוען לבתו החורגת, וונוס, שחייה בארה"ב. אין פרטים על וונוס ולא ברור מדוע הוא כותב לה את המכתב.
מהמכתב מבינים שהאח הבכור, אדם קשה. חייל משוחרר שנלחם במלחמת העולם השניה רצח ואנס שאינו מתנצל על כך. הוא ואחיו הצעיר, לב, נשלחו למחנה העבודה נורלג ללא סיבה מוסברת.
לב הוא נפש של אמן, הוא פצפיסט, משורר ועדין נפש. הוא נישא לאהבת חייו זויה, בדיוק לפני שנשלח למחנות. מסתבר שגם האח הבכור היה מאוהב בזויה.
זהו בעיקר סיפור של אהבה בין אחים והתחרות המרה בינהם על אישתו של לב. המספר טועה לחשוב שהוא מאוהב בזויה, אבל בקריאה פשוטה ואפילו לא פרשנית, נראה שמדובר בעיקר בקינאה ותשוקה.
לאחר תקופה פוליטית סוערת כשהעיניינים במחנות נרגעים, מאפשרים לאסירים ביקורי אישות. זויה מבקרת את לב, האח הצעיר, במחנה והם מתאחדים בבית הפגישות. התיאור בנוגע לאירועים בבית הפגישות מעורפל ולא ברור מה קרה שם. אולם לאחר הלילה המשותף שלהם, לב יוצא אדם שבור.
ביתרת הספר, המספר מתאר את החיים והקשיים של אסיריי עבודה בכפייה. את הרעב, האלימות, השיעמום, המחלות. את המתח הגובר בין האחים כאשר לב נרתע מהאלימות שהיא טבע שני לאחיו.
סה"כ המספר ואחיו חיו כאסירי כפיה כעשור.
לאחר מכן, הוא עוקב אחרי ההשפעות של המאסר על חיי האחים תוך שהוא מסכם באופן חפוז את ההיסטוריה הפוליטית הרוסית בחצי המאה עד תקופתו של פוטין.
מעבר לתיאורים הקשים של החיים במחנה, ניסיתי להבין את המסר ומאוד התקשתי. בסופו של דבר המפגש של לב עם זויה בבית הפגישות אינו לב הסיפור. גם לא אהבתו הנכזבת של המספר. אולי הסיפור הוא סיפור האלימות הטבועה ב D.N.A של המעצמה הרוסית כישות פוליטית?
אם אכן זו התשובה, אז גם במובן זה הספר לא מספיק טוב.
לסיכום, היו ניצוצות ושברים של כוונות, הן התאדו ככל שהספר התקדם ומסך העמימות והערפל לא מתרוממים.

The book caught my attention due to its content which discusses the experiences of prisoners in labor and forced labor camps in the Soviet Union. Additionally, I am interested in reading works by the author who is highly regarded in literary circles.
I'm afraid the book didn't meet my expectations. Upon reflection, I'm disappointed that Hazut Beit Publishing decided to translate it. It reads like obscure literature from the past, and it remains to be seen how much the reader will be able to comprehend.
This is the tale of two brothers who were arrested and sent to forced labor camps during the Stalinist purges that occurred after World War II.
The eldest brother, whose name is not known, survived a difficult period and later immigrated to the United States. He eventually became an arms dealer and amassed wealth. When he was 90 years old and still wealthy, he returned to the camp where he had once resided. There, he wrote a letter to his stepdaughter, Venus, who lived in the United States. It is unclear why he was writing the letter to Venus or any details about her. In the letter, he recorded his memories of the period he had survived, providing valuable insights and reflections.
From the letter, we understand that the storyteller has a difficult personality. A discharged soldier who fought in World War II murderer and a rapist who does not apologize for it. He and his younger brother, Lev, were sent to the Norlag labor camp for no apparent reason.
Lev, a gentle soul, was an artist, poet, and pacifist. He married the love of his life, Zoya, shortly before he was sent to the camps. However, it was later discovered that Lev older brother, was also in love with her.
This is a story primarily about the love between two brothers and their intense rivalry over Lev's wife, Zoya. The narrator mistakenly believes that he is in love with Zoya, but upon closer examination, it becomes clear that his feelings are driven more by jealousy and desire than true affection.
During a chaotic political period, when the tension in the camps had subsided, authorities granted permission for conjugal visits to prisoners. Zoya took advantage of this opportunity and visited her husband, Lev, in the camp. They reunited at the meeting house, but the details of what happened there were not clear. However, it is evident that after their night together, Lev's heart was left broken.
In the remaining part of the book, the narrator details the lives and difficulties faced by prisoners who were forced into labor. This includes their struggles with hunger, violence, boredom, and diseases. As the story progresses, the tension between the brothers increases when Lev begins to shy away from the violence that comes naturally to his brother.
In total, the narrator and his brother were held captive for about a decade.
He then explores the impact of incarceration on the brothers while giving a brief overview of Russian politics in the fifty years leading up to Putin's era.
After struggling to comprehend the message conveyed in the story set in a camp, I realized that it wasn't centered around Lev's meeting with Zoya or the narrator's unrequited love. Instead, it could be viewed as a tale about the inherent violence present in the Russian political establishment's DNA. The descriptions of life in the camp were challenging, but the story's underlying theme is worth pondering.
If this is indeed the answer, then the book is inadequate in this regard as well.
In summary, the book's ambiguous nature prevented the development of clear intentions.
