קראתי אותו לפני עשרים שנה והרגשתי כאילו האדמה זזה לי מתחת לרגליים.
פאניה הייתה בעיניי דמות גדולה מהחיים, כמעט מיתולוגית.
אישה שברחה מהתופת והחליטה ליצור לעצמה עתיד מתוך האפר.
לפעמים זיכרון קריאה ראשונה הוא כמו אהבה ראשונה, מלווה אותך שנים, גם כשהמציאות כבר מזמן זזה הלאה.
כשחזרתי אליו עכשיו, מצאתי משהו אחר.
לא פחות חשוב, רק אחר.
גיא אוני הוא רומן של צמיחה וגיבוש זהות.
על אישה צעירה שעוברת דרך ייסורים שאין דומים להם, ומנסה לשרוד.
ברוסיה משפחתה נטבחה והיא נאנסה, בארץ ישראל היא מנסה להיוולד מחדש.
פאניה סילס נכתבת כאן כמו יסוד טבע:
חדה, עקשנית, עצורה, לא רכה, לא מקושטת.
רחוקה מלהיות “סמל”, קרובה להיות אדם.
הרומן הזה, המתחקה אחר ראשית ההתיישבות בראש־פינה (גיא אוני), הוא יצירה פיוטית וריאליסטית כאחד. הוא מעז להציב במרכזו נרטיב נשי, מרדני ועיקש, בתוך היסטוריה שנכתבה לרוב בקול גברי. מקום שאין בו דבר מלבד אידיאולוגיה יוקדת ורצון להכות שורש.
אולם, השיבה אל הספר בחלוף השנים הציפה אמת מורכבת, ואולי אף כואבת. המפגש המחודש לא שיחזר את אותה חוויה טוטאלית. הספר נותר יצירה משובחת, כתובה לעילא ומרגשת, אך ההלם הראשוני, אותו כישוף שזכרתי, התפוגג. החדות של פאניה, שפעם פילחה את ליבי, כבר לא הותירה את אותו החותם.
זה מפחיד לגלות שהקריאה החווירה.
כי אולי לא רציתי לדעת שהכישוף דהה.
אבל אולי הכישוף לא נעלם מהספר,
אלא פשוט השתנה בי.
פעם קראתי את פאניה מתוך השתאות.
היום קראתי אותה מתוך הבנה.
וזה שינוי כואב, אבל גם הכרחי.
התבגרות של קוראת, לא של הרומן.
גיא אוני הוא ספר מצוין, מהחשובים שנכתבו כאן.
בשורות שלו מרגישים את נשימת התקופה, את הכאב, את השאיפה.
אבל יש מחיר לחזרה לספרים שאהבנו.
לפעמים, דווקא הזיכרון חד יותר מהמפגש המחודש.
ואולי זה בסדר.
לא כל ספר צריך ללוות אותנו פעמיים.
לפעמים, הפעם הראשונה היא האמת המדויקת ביותר.

Gai Oni is one of those books that stayed with me like a promise.
I first read it twenty years ago and felt as if the ground shifted beneath my feet.
Back then, Fania seemed larger than life, almost mythic, a woman who escaped the inferno and insisted on carving a future out of ash.
Sometimes, the memory of a first reading is like a first love, following you for years, even long after reality has moved on.
Coming back to it now, I found something different.
Not less, just different.
Gai Oni is a novel about growth and identity formation.
About a young woman who endures unimaginable suffering and tries to survive it.
In Russia, her family is slaughtered and she is raped; in the Land of Israel, she tries to be born anew.
Fania Sils is written here like a force of nature: sharp, stubborn, restrained, unsentimental, unadorned.
Far from being a symbol, much closer to being human.
The story follows the founding of Rosh Pina, when it was still called Gai Oni, a place with nothing but ideology, pain, and a stubborn desire to build a home.
It is a lyrical and realistic novel, with a rare early rebellious female voice, and with an apparent attempt to inscribe women’s experiences into a historical narrative that often belonged only to men.
And yet, there is a brutal truth.
My rereading wasn’t the same.
The book is still good, well-written, and moving.
But the original shock—the awe—had faded.
Fania is still worthy, but the sharpness I loved so much no longer cuts in the same place.
It is frightening to discover that the experience diminished, because I didn’t want to know the magic had weakened.
But perhaps the magic did not disappear from the book;
Maybe it changed in me.
Once, I read Fania with wonder.
Now, I read her with understanding.
And that shift is painful, but also necessary.
A maturation of the reader, not of the novel.
Gai Oni remains an excellent book, one of the most important written here.
You can feel the breath of the era within its lines, the pain, the ambition.
But there is a price in returning to books we once loved.
Sometimes, the memory is sharper than the renewed encounter.
And maybe that is alright.
Not every book should accompany us twice.
Sometimes the first encounter is the most truthful one.
