ירוק הוא הצבע הבא במסעו של צ’וסר.
אחרי האביר ובנו, מופיע השומר או איש היער. קשת בידו, חיצים נוצתיים על גבו, קרן כסף תלויה מצווארו.
בין האבירות המעונבת לבין אנשי הדת שיבואו אחריו, הוא מגלם סוג אחר של מוסר: מוסר עבודה, מוסר של דיוק, משמעת ושקט. מוסר עבודה טהור.
“ירוק גלימה היה וירק מצנפת,
אשפת חציו שמחגרתו לופפת,
נוצות טוס לה צבע רקמתיים
וקשת אדירים לו בידיו.”
במובן מסוים, זהו בן־דמותו של רובין הוד.
צ’וסר מקנה לו חירות מוגבלת, לצד נאמנות שקטה לאדונו.
הוא איש מעשה שאינו כמהה לתהילה, אלא לדיוק, ומתפקד כסמל לשורשיות האנגלית: יערות, צייד, ונאמנות פשוטה שאינה דורשת הדר.
⚖ בין האצולה לעם
צ’וסר כבר לא מתאר אצולה נוטפת זהב, אלא שכבה שמרוויחה את לחמה בכבוד.
זהו רגע נדיר שבו הפיוט האנגלי פונה לאדמה.
במאה ה־14, ה־Yeoman היה מעמד של בעלי אדמות קטנים; חקלאים עצמאיים ששירתו גם כקשתים במלחמות המלך.
הם לא היו אצילים, אך גם לא איכרים חסרי קול (זו לא טעות כתיב).
זו הייתה השכבה שעליה נבנתה אנגליה: אנשים שעבדו את אדמתם, שילמו מסים, היו מוכנים לשאת נשק.
צ’וסר הבין היטב את חשיבותם של אלה שאינם מהפכנים, אלא עמודי התווך השקטים של החברה: חזקים, שורשיים.
כך הוא משלב במסע האריסטוקרטי לקנטרברי את נציג אנגליה הפשוטה, זו שמחזיקה את הממלכה באמת. לא באמצעות נאומים, אלא באמצעות עבודה.
🏹 בין רובין הוד לצליינות
הבחירה להלביש אותו בירוק, עם נוצות וקשת, איננה אסתטית בלבד.
זו קריצה מודעת למיתוס רובין הוד, שהיה נפוץ כבר בימי צ’וסר.
הקהל האנגלי הבין מיד את הקוד: זהו “איש היער” שמכיר את הדרך טוב יותר מכל אביר.
כך, בתוך שיירת עולי הרגל האליטיסטית, נכנסת דמות שמייצגת את אנגליה העממית, עם ריח האדמה, הקשת, והנאמנות לממלכה שאינה נובעת מיוקרה אלא משורשיות.
זהו פולקלור שהוחדר אל תוך קאנון, לא כהתרסה אלא כתזכורת:
גם הספרות הגבוהה חייבת לדעת לירות חץ ישר.
🌿 מוסר של מעשה, לא של דיבור
השומר הוא דמות של צומת דרכים: בין טבע לתרבות, בין חרב לאת, בין נאמנות למרד כבוש.
הוא אינו מטיף או נואם, אלא רק פועל,
וזהו המוסר החדש של צ’וסר: מוסר של מעשה.
🧭 הציר שעליו מסתובבת התמונה
האיש שצ’וסר מציב בין האביר לנזירה איננו “ממלא מקום”, אלא מפתח להבנת העולם החדש.
הוא מייצג את אנגליה הפרקטית, זו שעובדת, נלחמת ומגינה על אדמתה.
“רובין הוד ללא מרד”, סמל של נאמנות פשוטה ומדויקת.
צ’וסר רומז שהכוח עובר מן התהילה אל המיומנות, מן המעמד אל הדיוק.
ובפתח המסע לקנטרברי, הוא קובע כלל פשוט:
הדרך שייכת למי שיודע לפעול, לא רק לחלום.
🌲 The Yeoman A Man of the Forest: Between Order and Freedom
The fourth essay in the project Sivi Reads Chaucer
Green is the next color in Chaucer’s procession.
After the Knight and his son, the Yeoman appears, a man of the forests.
A bow in his hand, feathered arrows on his back, a silver horn hanging from his neck.
Placed between the polished chivalry and the ornamented clergy that follow, he embodies a different kind of ethic: the ethic of work, precision, discipline, and silence. A pure work ethic.
“A green hood upon his head, a green coat too,
a sheaf of arrows smartly girded,
bright feathers neatly trimmed,
and a mighty bow within his grasp.”
In many ways, he is Chaucer’s echo of Robin Hood.
Chaucer grants him limited freedom alongside quiet loyalty to his lord.
He is a man of action, uninterested in glory, committed instead to precision.
He becomes a symbol of English rootedness: forests, hunting, and a plain loyalty that requires no display.
⚖ Between Nobility and the Common Folk
Chaucer is no longer describing gold-soaked nobility, but a class that earns its living with its own hands.
A rare moment when English poetry turns its gaze toward the soil.
In the fourteenth century, the Yeoman was a class of small landholders, independent farmers who also served as archers in the king’s wars.
Not nobles, yet not voiceless peasants either.
This was the stratum on which England was built: people who worked their own land, paid their dues, and were ready to bear arms when asked.
Chaucer understood their importance.
Not revolutionaries, but the quiet pillars of society: strong, rooted, essential.
By placing such a figure within the aristocratic pilgrimage to Canterbury, he gives voice to the England that truly sustained the realm.
Not through speeches, but through labor.
🏹 Between Robin Hood and Pilgrimage
His green attire, the feathers, the bow – these are not aesthetic choices only.
They are a conscious nod to the Robin Hood tradition, already widespread in Chaucer’s day.
Readers would have recognized the code immediately:
This is the “man of the forest,” who knows the roads better than any knight.
Thus, among courtiers and clerics, Chaucer introduces someone who represents the folk of the land – with the scent of earth, arrows, and loyalty born not of prestige, but of roots.
It is folklore embedded in canon, not as protest, but as a reminder:
Even high literature must know how to shoot straight.
🌿 A Morality of Action, Not of Speech
The Yeoman is a transitional figure: between nature and culture, sword and plow, loyalty and restrained rebellion.
He does not preach. He acts.
This is the moral innovation in Chaucer: action over declaration.
🧭 The Axis on Which the Image Turns
The man Chaucer places between the Knight and the Prioress is not a filler.
He is a key to understanding the emerging world.
He represents practical England, the England that works, protects, and survives.
He is a “Robin Hood without revolt,” a symbol of simple, precise loyalty.
Chaucer suggests a silent shift:
Power is moving from prestige to skill, from social rank to accuracy.
At the gateway of the Canterbury journey, he sets a modest rule:
The road belongs not to those who dream, but to those who know how to act.
