Which Mage Moved the Cheese?
Casino Witch Mysteries #2
Which Mage Moved the Cheese? / Nikki Haverstock
The first book in the Casino Witch Mysteries series was cute enough to make me continue to the second.
Mistake.
At the center of the series is Ella, a woman who discovers that she is a witch and enters a paranormal world she barely understands. She has a cat familiar, magical abilities she still does not really know how to control, a developing relationship with Vin, and a long list of unanswered questions left over from the first book.
On paper, interesting.
In practice, Which Mage Moved the Cheese? manages to take almost everything that could have been interesting and dry it out completely.
This time, Ella attends a paranormal cheese convention, where the former president of the Paranormal Cheese Council is found dead beneath a giant wheel of cheese. From there, she gets pulled into an investigation involving magical cheeses, addictive fondue, bizarre ingredients, traps, and ridiculously exaggerated villains.
I have no problem with silly.
I have a problem with silly that has nothing underneath it.
If only the mystery had been weak while the characters made up for it.
They do not.
The mystery is weak. The suspects are flat. The investigation feels random, and the solution doesn't create the sense of a carefully built puzzle. It feels like one more event in a sequence of nonsense.
Ella does not develop. She still cannot properly control her magic, still doesn't really understand the world she's entered, and the book barely expands the mythology around her. In the first book, discovering that she was a witch was genuinely intriguing. By the second, I expected the world to open up.
It does not.
What is the point of a world full of witches if there is no real magic in it?
The magic is decoration. Magical cheese, magical objects, paranormal creatures, a few abilities, a little danger. The world has no sense of rules, boundaries, learning, or discovery. The world remains scenery.
The larger plot hanging over the series does not develop either.
What happened to Ella’s father? Why did he hide her? What exactly was he trying to protect her from? Who are the people connected to his past?
Those were questions the first book raised successfully.
The second book gives no answers.
Instead of following that thread, the story sends Ella running after cheese. If cheese does not interest you, you can probably skip this one.
Even the relationship with Vin, which at least provided a small romantic spark in the first book, takes a particularly strange turn. Ella decides to take a vow of abstinence, and suddenly even the little momentum their relationship had comes to a stop.
This is not a slow burn.
This is a glowing ember with a bucket of cold water thrown over it.
So what remains?
Mostly a series that really, really wants to be cute.
I was looking for a little more.
A better mystery. Less foolish characters. Magic that actually develops. Most of all, some sense that the second book in a series is taking me somewhere.
Instead, I got a wheel of cheese.
Full of holes.
And it was not even an interesting wheel of cheese.
