The Odd Flamingo | Nina Bawden

The Odd Flamingo / Nina Bawden

In Britain, Nina Bawden is known primarily as a children's author. Here, she is hardly known at all. Even her British readers do not always know that at the beginning of her career she wrote two hard-edged crime novels, and "The Odd Flamingo", first published in 1954, is one of them.

The novel is now part of the British Library Crime Classics series. Anyone approaching it through such respectable surroundings might expect a brilliant detective to gather the suspects in a drawing room and explain exactly how they tried to deceive him and failed. Bawden does not provide that. Her plot twists in less orderly directions, and the line between respectability and dubious behaviour is extremely blurred.

Will Hunt, a solicitor, is summoned by Celia, a former girlfriend. Rose Blacker, an eighteen-year-old girl who has just finished school, has come to her claiming that she is pregnant by Celia's husband, Humphrey Stone, a headmaster and an old friend of Will's. Humphrey denies that he is the father but admits that there was a relationship between them. The love letters he wrote to Rose make the situation considerably more complicated.

Then a body is discovered, and a story of adultery and blackmail becomes a murder investigation. Will's inquiries lead him to a nightclub called The Odd Flamingo, whose patrons generally prefer not to discuss their pasts.

Bawden reveals the connections between the characters at a measured pace. Every new detail changes the meaning of something we already knew, and an explanation that seems reasonable in one chapter turns out to be only part of the truth in the next.

Will is both narrator and investigator. He is not a professional detective and he is certainly not neutral: he is Celia's former lover and Humphrey's longtime friend. As the investigation progresses, his trust in Humphrey begins to crack, and we watch those cracks develop from inside his own mind. By the end, it becomes increasingly difficult to reconcile the man Will thought he knew with the man gradually being revealed to him.

And then there is Rose. At first, she is a pregnant teenager in trouble, and it is easy to feel sorry for her. As Will meets people who knew her, sympathy gradually turns into suspicion, until her real character is exposed. Rose is manipulative, and the confidence with which she presents her lies makes her the most disturbing character in the novel.

London in the 1950s fits the story perfectly. Nightclubs and petty criminals exist alongside respectable middle-class society, and it is not always clear where one ends and the other begins. In Bawden's world there are no simple good people and bad people. Respectable people fail too. Respectable people lie too. They simply do it wearing a tie.

It is difficult not to wonder about the timing of the novel. Bawden wrote it in the same year she divorced her first husband and married Austen Kark, who was himself married when they met. A novel about respectable marriages cracking under the pressure of an affair, written by a woman who was leaving one marriage and entering another that very year.

For most of the book, the police remain in the background, while the plot moves forward through Will's conversations and what he manages to extract from other people. At the decisive moment, however, that changes, and I did not like it. After an entire novel built around Will's investigation, the solution arrives through one long confession, a police officer is the one who obtains it, and Will, our narrator, becomes a spectator. Characters on whom the plot depended disappear in a few lines.

Even so, "The Odd Flamingo" is an excellent crime novel, considerably darker than either its title or the series surrounding it might suggest. It is easy to feel sorry for someone when you know only half the truth. Bawden makes sure we learn the rest.
