The first storyline takes place in England in 1852 and follows William, a disillusioned naturalist attempting to design a revolutionary beehive. For him, bees symbolize the key to prosperity, yet his personal life and family relationships prove just as complex as his scientific ambitions.
The second unfolds in the United States in 2007, focusing on George, an American beekeeper facing the mysterious collapse of his hives. His struggle is not only to preserve his farm but also to ensure continuity for the next generation, while his son distances himself from the agricultural tradition.
The third, and perhaps most gripping, is set in China in 2098. In this dystopian future, bees have vanished completely, leaving humanity in crisis. Tao, a young mother, works in grueling conditions, manually pollinating trees and flowers. Through her eyes, we witness a world crumbling under food shortages and the devastating consequences of ecological collapse. Her story carries much of the novel’s suspense, as she confronts not only the collapse of society but also a personal loss that drives the narrative forward.
The power of this book lies in its skillful interweaving of the three timelines. Each perspective sheds light on the relationship between humans and nature, agriculture, heritage, and the fragility of life itself. Lunde writes with clarity and flow, and while at times her characters serve more as vehicles for ideas than fully fleshed-out individuals, the story remains engaging and thought-provoking.
There is also a strong didactic element: this is clearly a novel designed to raise awareness about ecological crisis. Yet it never fully loses sight of its human core, balancing urgent environmental commentary with emotional resonance and narrative tension.
