הספר השני בסדרת The Poppy War ממשיך את עלילותיה של רין, גיבורה צעירה ועוצמתית שמוצאת את עצמה מרוסקת פיזית ונפשית לאחר המאורעות הדרמטיים שסיימו את הספר הראשון. הסיפור נפתח כשהיא מכורה לאופיום, שקועה באבל ובייסורי מצפון כבדים על ההרס שגרמה , ומכאן, אין הרבה התפתחויות עד השליש האחרון של הספר. רוב העלילה מלווה את רין כשהיא מדשדשת בין דיכאון, ייאוש, חוסר שליטה והחלטות אימפולסיביות.
הבעיה המרכזית שלי עם הספר נעוצה בקצב ובמבנה. זהו ספר ארוך מאוד, לעיתים ללא הצדקה של ממש. תחושת הגודש והעייפות גוברת לא פעם על תחושת ההתרחשות. לאורך פרקים רבים, רין נותרת באותה נקודת שפל רגשית, ללא כל התקדמות פנימית. הדמות שלה מאופיינת בבכיינות, התפרצויות זעם וחוסר יכולת לגייס את כוחותיה. כל אלה יוצרים עומס רגשי על הקורא – ולעיתים גם שעמום. בשלב מסוים, המעגליות הצפויה של האירועים והתגובות שלה הפכה למתישה. לקח לי זמן רב להשלים את הקריאה.
גם כשהסיפור נוגע בנקודות מעניינות, הסופרת מהססת לקחת את העלילה צעד אחד קדימה. רין, שאמורה להוביל ולחולל שינוי, מתנהלת לעיתים כמו ילדה קטנה: חסרת סבלנות, חסרת ויסות, רגשית ואימפולסיבית. מצב הטנטרום המתמשך שבו היא נתונה כמעט לכל אורך הספר , בוודאי לא מסייע לה להפוך לדמות מרכזית מעוררת הזדהות.
הספר מתיימר לשקף הקבלות להיסטוריה הסינית, בדגש על מלחמות אזרחים, מאבקי שלטון וביקורת על מעצמות זרות. אך בניגוד לספר הראשון, כאן ההקבלות ההיסטוריות עמומות הרבה יותר. מאחר שאינני בקיאה בפרטי ההיסטוריה הסינית, התקשיתי לעקוב אחר הבסיס הרעיוני של העלילה , שנותרה עבורי יותר פוליטית מאשר רגשית או אפית.
אם בספר הראשון הייתה תחושת מסע ברור של גיבורה שנאבקת בדרכה אל העצמה, כאן התחושה היא של נסיגה. רין הופכת לתלותית, לעיתים פאסיבית, ולעיתים אכזרית כלפי עצמה והסובבים אותה. הקשרים שלה עם דמויות אחרות מעניינים לפרקים, אך אינם מצליחים לייצר עוגן רגשי משמעותי. רק בשליש האחרון מורגשת התאוששות , היא שבה להשתמש בכוחותיה, הקרבות נעשים מרהיבים, והקצב מתגבר, אך זה מעט מדי ומאוחר מדי.
בסופו של דבר, The Dragon Republic הוא רומן שאפתני ומורכב, אך מבחינתי , אכזבה גדולה. אחרי התחלה עוצמתית בספר הראשון, קיבלתי חוויה מתישה שבחנה את גבולות הסבלנות שלי. דמות ראשית שקופאת במקום ועלילה שמתקשה להתרומם – אלה אינם החומרים מהם עשויה אפוס אמיתי.

The Dragon Republic, the second installment in The Poppy War trilogy, picks up where the first book left off, with Rin shattered, addicted to opium, and drowning in guilt over the destruction she unleashed. But instead of building momentum, the plot stalls. For most of the book, Rin drifts between depression, rage, impulsive decisions, and emotional paralysis. Her arc feels stagnant, and personal and narrative progress comes painfully late.
The novel is undeniably long, and often unjustifiably so. There’s a sense of narrative bloat: chapters repeat emotional beats without deepening them, and Rin remains stuck in her lowest state for far too long. Her constant crying, volatile behavior, and inability to access her powers become exhausting. As a reader, I became increasingly frustrated by the circular structure and her predictable reactions. It took me a long time to push through.
Even when the plot introduces compelling political and military developments, they often feel like missed opportunities. Rin is expected to rise as a military and ideological leader, but she lacks political insight, emotional maturity, and any sense of restraint. Her behavior resembles that of a three-year-old, incapable of self-regulation or delayed gratification. This emotional immaturity hinders any meaningful development.
The book attempts to mirror periods of Chinese history, civil wars, shifting regimes, and Western imperialism, but unlike in the first novel, the historical parallels are murky and underdeveloped. Without prior knowledge of Chinese history, I struggled to understand the ideological backbone of the story. It read more like a disconnected sequence of events than a cohesive epic.
While the first book offered a clear arc of empowerment and descent, The Dragon Republic feels like a regression. Rin becomes more dependent, often passive, and occasionally cruel. Her relationships with others are interesting but lack emotional depth. Only in the final third does the story regain energy: her powers return, battles intensify, and the pace quickens, but it’s too little, too late.
In the end, The Dragon Republic is ambitious and layered, but it ultimately disappointed me. After the thrilling promise of The Poppy War, this sequel felt like a tedious exercise in emotional repetition. A stalling plot, a stagnant heroine, and unfulfilled potential made this a difficult read that tested my patience more than it rewarded my curiosity.
