Annabel Monaghanโ€™s earlier book, โ€œNora Goes Off Script,โ€ didnโ€™t impress me. It had several elements but lacked the authenticity that could have made me enjoy the plot. Looking back, it wasnโ€™t enjoyable, especially given its positive reviews.

In contrast, โ€œSummer Romanceโ€ encompassed everything I seek in quality romantic literature.

Ellie Morris is a home organizer. She visits homes to assist residents in sorting through outdated possessions and organizing the remaining items in an accessible and usable manner. The home organization serves as therapy for both parties: on the one hand, clearing out old items introduces new, positive energy and has a purifying effect; on the other hand, it is a practical profession that requires Ellie to listen to others while being pragmatic and decisive, usually for the benefit of others.

Ellie is like the cobbler who goes barefoot. Her house is a whirlwind of chaos, and so is her life. Her husband left her with their three children, and she still hasnโ€™t recovered from her motherโ€™s death, who died two years ago. Ellie is sinking into depression, and just as she doesnโ€™t organize her own home, sheโ€™s neglecting every other aspect of her life. For two years, Ellie hasnโ€™t worn jeans with a zipper. The absence of these pants is the most profound and existential symbol of her depression and decline.

One day, Ellie meets Ethan at the dog park. Ethan is several years younger than Ellie. Heโ€™s also a successful lawyer, and more importantly, he is the younger brother of Ellieโ€™s friend, having known her since he was a child. He recognizes Ellie, though she doesnโ€™t recognize him. She hasnโ€™t seen Ethan in years; now, heโ€™s a handsome and mature 36-year-old man who has returned to town for two months to sell his parentsโ€™ house after they decide to move to Florida.

Ellieโ€™s relationship with Ethan awakens her from the slumber sheโ€™s been in. She is drawn to this charming yet peculiar man. Ellie begins dressing up, including wearing pants with zippers, applying makeup, and exercising.

Ethan, who knew Ellie as a strong and opinionated woman, is shocked to encounter this defeated woman who has given up her accounting career and canโ€™t even prepare an expense report for her mediation process with her ex. He offers to assist Ellie with the mediation while she helps him sort through his parentsโ€™ house so he can sell it.

Ethan attends mediation meetings wearing strange and eccentric suits that prevent Ellieโ€™s ex from properly evaluating him. He helps Ellie rediscover her lost voice and achieve what she deserves during the difficult process sheโ€™s facing.

Their relationship unfolds in an authentic, touching, and beautiful manner. Each of them bears years of emotional baggage. Ellie especially struggles with the toxic relationship with her husband, which leaves her feeling worthless. Through Ethan, she rediscovers her voice.

Although โ€œSummer Romanceโ€ is undoubtedly a romantic novel that delves into Ellie and Ethanโ€™s relationship, it also possesses surprising depth. This novel explores themes of self-discovery, second chances, and the empowering nature of having someone by your side who truly believes in and loves you.

The writing avoids being preachy, and the plot steers clear of a self-help book tone. Highly recommended.
