Scandalize My Name rests on the feeling that something in this house was rotten long before the body appeared. It is a book about blackmail, about power fed by other people’s secrets, and about one basement tenant who poisons an entire space.
The book opens directly inside the story. A large house, a fractured family, a basement tenant almost no one likes, and an atmosphere that immediately makes it clear that the victim had already contaminated the lives of everyone around him.
Sinclair wastes no time. In the first chapter, she surrounds Ivan Sweet with people who have good reasons to hate him, and by the end of it he is already dead. It is a clever opening. From the first pages, Sweet is present in the novel less as a human being than as a poison spreading through the house.
The heart of the book lies in Ivan Sweet himself. What kind of person must someone be for so many people to feel that the world has become lighter without him?
Sweet is a systematic blackmailer. He stores information, records weaknesses and turns other people’s fear into a source of income. Grainger discovers that he kept orderly records of his profits and of the material he used to blackmail people. During the war, he had earned money in part by blackmailing women whose husbands were serving overseas.
Sweet feeds on the moral decay of others, and carefully cultivates it.
Sinclair builds an entire human world around Sweet: a family, neighbours, young people at the beginning of their lives, adults who lived through the war. Each of them is forced to live, in a different way, beneath the shadow of a man who knows too much.
The murder is not an isolated event. It is the result of pressure that has been building inside the house for a long time.
Detective Paul Grainger is methodical, restrained and as perceptive about human beings as he is about criminal investigation. In a novel filled with characters, tensions and clues, he provides its steady center.
As a debut, Scandalize My Name already possesses a confident voice. Martin Edwards notes in his introduction that this was Fiona Sinclair’s first novel, and that it already revealed considerable promise.
Her inexperience is visible in the number of characters introduced too quickly and in the frequent shifts between points of view. Even so, it is clear that this is a writer with a sure instinct for story and character.
Fiona Sinclair died a year after the publication of her first book. Only five of her novels were published, three of them after her death. It is difficult to read Scandalize My Name without wondering what else she might have written had she lived longer.
There is a voice here. It is not perfect, but it is alive, confident and sharp enough to leave a real impression.
Edwards also notes in the introduction a surprising resemblance between Grainger and P. D. James’s Adam Dalgliesh, who appeared two years later. Both detectives are widowers, intellectuals, living alone in London, and as perceptive about people as they are about investigation.
That resemblance only deepens the sense of lost possibility. Sinclair wrote her first novel in the upstairs room of her Highgate home while living with cancer. A debut born from that kind of urgency reads differently.
I loved Scandalize My Name. It creates a vivid, sharp and poisoned world, filled with characters who are human beings before they become suspects.
