Bunburry #1
Murder at the Mousetrap by Helena Marchmont is a light-hearted cozy mystery set in the quaint English village of Bunburry. It draws the reader into a charmingly offbeat world of intrigue.
Alfie McAlister, a Londoner in his early forties, relocates to the countryside following the death of his aunt Augusta, who leaves him a small cottage in her will. He arrives hoping for a fresh start and peace, but soon discovers that the villageโs tranquility is little more than a pleasant illusion.
Things quickly spiral whenย a mysterious death occurs during rehearsals for Agatha Christieโsย The Mousetrapย at the local theatre. Although Alfie has yet to find his footing in the villageโand is seriously considering heading back to Londonโheโs drawn into the investigation, largely thanks to Liz and Marge, two of his late auntโs spirited old friends, whose enthusiasm for murder mysteries far exceeds any concern for social grace.
The characters inhabiting Bunburry are one of the bookโs most substantial assets. Liz and Marge function as a kind of Greek chorus and an amateur sleuthing duoโhardly coordinated, but impressively determined. They bring with them a generous dose of self-aware humor, insatiable nosiness, and dialogue that veers between countryside anecdotes and Shakespearean drama. Oscar, Alfieโs urban and efficient friend, also stands out, communicating via text messages packed with Oscar Wilde quotesโa delightful touch that adds both literary flair and dry wit.
The result is an amusing cocktail that balances humor, culture, and crime in just the right measure. The bookโs atmosphere is another winning element, evoking strong echoes of classic Agatha Christie settings. Bunburry emerges as a self-contained human microcosm: cobbled lanes, bakeries, a theatre, and a bookshopโall picturesque, yet each one hiding its own small (and not-so-small) secrets.
The story unfolds at a measured but consistent pace. Reading it feels like walking through the countrysideโslow enough to enjoy the scenery, but with unexpected twists around every corner. Alfie himself is a well-crafted protagonist: modest, gentle, a little shy, and carrying a curious family backstory. While readers donโt yet receive the complete picture of what drove him from London to the village, they learn about his financial situation and unconventional path to building his wealth.
As an introduction to a series, this book does exactly what it should: it hints at deeper layers without overwhelming, offers a lead character itโs easy to follow, and sets up a world readers will likely want to revisit. The murder may be solved, but life in Bunburry has more surprises in store.
Ultimately, Murder at the Mousetrap delivers several delightful hours of reading. Itโs a charming start to a series with highly addictive potential.
