I liked the book “Ryan’s Bed,” which was very different in romance. It dealt with essential issues in teenage life, such as suicide, loss, and self-image. So, when I had the opportunity to read another book by Tijan, I was happy for the chance.

“Hate to Love” also addresses essential issues and focuses on the lives of college students. However, in my opinion, the author did not establish the unique style evident in Ryan’s Bed when writing it, so the book does not recreate the magic touch.

“Hate to Love” is a solitary book with a closed ending.

Kennedy Clark, a determined young woman, began her college journey with a major in political science and pre-law. Her senior year of high school was marked by persecution and bullying, yet she refused to be defined by it. She faced attempts by various girls to exploit her friendships to get to her brothers, but she was resolute. She believed college was her chance to start fresh in a place where neither she nor her brothers were known. To ensure this new beginning, she set several rules that must not be broken:

The first rule is to avoid hot guys. The second is to avoid unnecessary drama. The third is that no one is allowed to know about her family connections, and her brother is not allowed to contact her even though he also studies at the same college.

But the meeting with Shay Coleman, the quarterback, destroys all the rules and all the rules.

Shay’s reputation precedes him on the field and in the bedroom. He is arrogant (rightly so), hot, and popular, and all the girls turn their heads after him. Shay studies in Kennedy’s class, and they come close to a collision from the first meeting between them.

Kennedy, who lost all her forgiving qualities during high school, has no intention of giving up on Shay. With every meeting with him, she finds explanations for her hatred. Until another event destroys the cards, Kennedy realizes that Shay is more than the person she sees.

The story is told from Kennedy’s perspective and follows her first year of college.

The events include the story of her relationship with Shay and various events in the lives of college students.

Kennedy’s character is biting, not only toward Shay but also toward everyone around her. She suffers from trust issues, tantrums, and various anxieties.

I gave the book three stars because it is nice, but nothing else. The book does not reach the emotional levels of “Ryan’s Bed.” The critical themes, such as sexism and the objectification of college girls, are presented in a ridiculous and immature manner. Kennedy’s outbursts were violent, and I never found them proportional to the events she faced. Additionally, the essential theme of rape was treated too superficially.
