לא כל חתונה היא סיבה לשמחה.
כשאחיו הבכור של הלורד המיש מונטגומרי מחליט לוותר על אירוסיו לליידי מהמעמד הגבוה ולברוח עם בתו של כומר, המשפחה עומדת לאבד את האחוזה הסקוטית שלה. כך מתחילה עלילה שמבטיחה הרבה יותר ממה שהיא מצליחה לקיים.
המיש, האח הצעיר, יוצא ללונדון כדי לעצור את החתונה, אבל במקום שיחה ישירה עם אחיו, הוא מעדיף לפרוץ לחדרה של אישה זרה, לנסות לשחד אותה, ולהסתבך בשלל סיטואציות משונות שביניהן, ניחשתם נכון, מתפתחת גם רומנטיקה.
ג’ורג’יאנה באטרוורת’, אחותה של הכלה, לא מתכוונת לתת לאף אחד להרוס את סיכוי אחותה לאושר. היא נבונה, נחושה, ומצליחה לא פעם לעמוד בפרץ, עד שגם היא מתחילה להימשך לסקוטי העקשן שמולה.
הרעיון הבסיסי חביב: בלבול זהויות, התנגשות בין מעמדות, קצת הומור תקופתי.
אבל הרגשתי שהביצוע לפעמים דומה למסיבת תה שהתארכה מדי. הדיאלוגים חוזרים על עצמם, הדמויות מתקשות לעורר הזדהות אמיתית, והעלילה נראית לעיתים כאילו בעצמה היא מחפשת לאן ללכת.
הבעיה המרכזית נעוצה דווקא באח הבכור, קאלום, שבלעדיו לא היה ספר; לצערי, הנוכחות שלו דלילה עד לא קיימת. לא ברור מה הוא מוצא בשרלוט, ולא ברור אם היא בכלל מודעת למחיר שהנישואים לאחיו גובים מהמשפחה. המיש הוא זה שסופג, פועל, מקריב. כל זה, בלי קתרזיס אמיתי או אפילו הכרה מצד מי שניצלו את טוב לבו.
יש רגעים משעשעים, במיוחד כשהמיש וג’ורג’יאנה מנסים לגבור זה על זה בתחבולות קטנות, אבל ההומור לא מצליח להחזיק עלילה שמתנדנדת בין סאטירה רומנטית לנובלה קלילה מדי.
זה מסוג הספרים שמסיימים עם חיוך קל, אבל גם עם התחושה שיכולתי לוותר עליו לטובת משהו עם קצת יותר בשר ופחות גבינה.

Hamish, the dutiful younger brother, heads to London to stop the wedding, but instead of confronting. Still, instead his brother directly, he breaks into the wrong bedroom, tries to bribe the wrong woman, and finds himself entangled in a web of confusion, pride, and unexpected attraction.
Georgiana Butterworth, the older sister of the bride-to-be, refuses to let anyone destroy her sister’s happiness. She’s clever, stubborn, and not easily intimidated, especially by a handsome Scotsman who seems determined to meddle.
The premise is charming—mistaken identities, class clashes, and a touch of Regency humor —but the execution wobbles. Dialogue repeats itself, the pacing drifts, and the characters often feel trapped in scenes that don’t know where to go.
The biggest problem lies with Callum, the older brother, whose forbidden romance sets everything in motion. His motivations remain murky, and his fiancée Charlotte never seems aware of the cost her engagement imposes on Hamish. Meanwhile, Hamish bears all the emotional weight, yet receives neither gratitude nor closure.
There are funny moments, particularly when Hamish and Georgiana try to outwit each other, but the humor isn’t quite enough to hold the story together.
This is the kind of historical romance you finish with a faint smile – and a quiet wish for something with a bit more substance, and fewer holes between the cheese.
