הגעתי אל לאור הירח כמעט במקרה, בחיפוש אחר משהו קצר, נעים, לא מחייב. תמר פריד, עיתונאית במקצועה, פרסמה את הספר בשנת 2012 והוא כולל 37 סיפורים קצרים, כולם בנויים סביב טוויסט אחרון. לפעמים מבריק, לפעמים צפוי, לפעמים פשוט… שם.
הבעיה מתחילה במבנה. כשכל סיפור מסתיים בתפנית, המנגנון נשחק מהר. אחרי חמישה או שישה סיפורים, הקורא כבר מצפה לבום, וכשמצפים לו הוא מאבד את כוחו. הרגע שהיה אמור להיות מפתיע הופך למעין תרגיל קבוע, כמו לצפות בקוסם שעושה שוב ושוב את אותו הטריק עם אותה מגבעת.
ועדיין, יש רגעים יפים. הסיפורים שאי אפשר לנחש את סופם מביאים איתם עונג קטן, כמעט שובב. הכתיבה של פריד מלבבת, ויש בה חיוך. לא צחקתי בקול, אבל בהחלט הרגשתי את הקריצה. היו מי שהגדירו את הסיפורים כסוריאליסטיים; אני לא הרגשתי שם סוריאליזם, אלא יותר הגזמה מחויכת שעובדת לפעמים ופחות באחרות.
הקריאה ברצף, בגלל האורך המזערי של חלק מהסיפורים, מייצרת תחושת סרט נע. 37 כניסות, 37 יציאות, אותה תבנית. מי שמחפש קריאה מהירה, לא מחייבת, ימצא כאן חומר קל ומנחם לשעת ערב. מי שמחפש עומק, או לפחות שינוי בקצב, ימצא את עצמו חוזר אל החווייה הראשונית: נעים, אבל מונוטוני.

I picked up Under the Moonlight almost by accident, looking for something brief and undemanding. Tamar Fried, a journalist, published this collection in 2012. It includes 37 very short stories, each built around a twist ending. Sometimes clever, sometimes predictable, sometimes simply… there.
The problem lies in the structure. When every story leans on a twist, the mechanism quickly wears down. After a handful of pieces, the reader is already waiting for the punchline, and when you expect it, it loses its power. The surprise becomes a routine, like watching a magician repeat the same trick with the same hat.
And yet, there are charming moments. The stories whose endings can’t be anticipated deliver a small, delightful jolt. Fried’s writing is warm and humorous. I didn’t laugh out loud, but I felt the wink behind the words. Some readers called these stories surreal; I didn’t. They’re more playful exaggerations than surrealism.
Reading the stories in succession, because many of them are extremely short, creates a conveyor-belt effect. Thirty-seven entries, thirty-seven exits, all cut from a similar mold. If you’re looking for fast, pleasant, easy reading, you’ll find it here. If you're looking for depth or a shift in register, you’ll likely return to the initial impression: enjoyable, but ultimately repetitive.
