מהמאה ה 15, הגדיר החוק האנגלי פעילויות מיניות בין גברים כעבירה פלילית. גם אם הפעילות התרחשה ללא עדים, ניתן היה להפליל ולהרשיע בעבירה בגין מעשים שנעשו בפרטיות מלאה. במהלך השנים, העונשים על עבירה זו השתנו, ובמאה ה 20, העבירה נשאה עימה עונש מאסר. בשנת 1967 הוכשרו בחוק יחסים בהסכמה בין גברים מבוגרים.

ברקע נסיבות אלה, עלילת "השוטר שלי" מתארת משולש אהבים בין 2 גברים ואישה.

טום ברג'ס אף פעם לא היה גבר רגיל. כבר בצעירותם, הזהירה סילבי את חברתה הטובה מריון, שלא להתפתות ליופיו של טום. אבל מריון, לא יכלה לעמוד בפני יופיו ואישיותו והתאהבה בו באופן שמעמיק עם שנות התבגרותם.

העלילה נעה בין ההווה (1999), בו מריון מטפלת בפטריק שנמצא במצב סיעודי קשה אחרי שבץ. מריון התעקשה שפרטיק ישהה בביתם והם יטפלו בו. לבין העבר (1956 – 1959) שמסופר מנקודת מבטה של מריון הכותבת לבעלה טום מכתב וידוי ארוך על אירועי העבר ויומנו של פטריק שמשלים את סיפור האירועים מנקודת מבטו.

לכל אורך הפרקים קולו של טום לא נשמע ואם הוא נשמע זה רק מקולותיהם של שני האנשים שמאוהבים בו: מריון ופטריק.

בתחילה לא הבנתי מדוע הסופרת בחרה בעלילה שגוזרת על טום שתיקה, אבל ככל שהתקדמתי בספר כך הבנתי שהעוצמה של הספר נובעת דווקא מהעובדה שהקורא אינו מקבל את זווית הראיה של טום (וגם לא הסברים).

העלילה טראגית ועצובה. הנישואים של טום למריון הותירו את שלושתם כמהים לחיים שהם לא יכולים לקבל. שלושת נהיים בעיקר מתוסכלים, לא מסופקים ובודדים.

במהלך הקריאה לא יכלתי להימנע מכעס על טום והעובדה שהקול שלו לא נשמע החמיר את רגשות הטינה שלי כלפיו. הוא המחולל הראשוני של הקטסטרופה. העוולות שהוא גורם למריון (ואומנם ברמה פחותה יותר גם לפטריק) קוממו אותי. הזדעזעתי גם מחוסר הנכונות שלו לקחת אחריות. לאורך כל הדרך הוא מתעתע במריון, מנצל את אהבתה אליו, מתנהג אליה כאילו היא הוזה או מדמיינת וגוזל ממנה את המעט שיכלה לקבל ממנו או מאדם אחר לו היתה עוזבת אותו. מאוחר יותר חוסר הנכונות שלו לדבר עם פטריק או להשתתף בטיפול בו, גם כשברור שהוא גוסס, הרתיח אותי.

ריחמתי על מריון ועל פטריק. אומנם, שניהם גם פטריק וגם מריון אינם מלאכים זכים, ומריון היתה נבזית ביותר, אבל לא הגיעו להם חיים של אומללות.

הספר מבוסס על מערכת יחסיו של א. מ. פורסטר עם בוב בקינגהאם, שוטר במשטרת לונדון. על פי וויקפדיה, מערכת היחסים בינהם נמשכה כ – 40 שנים ובמהלכה הוא פיתח ידידות עם אשתו של בוב, מאי.

English law, dating back to the 15th century, considered sexual activities between men as a criminal offense. Even if the activity was done in complete privacy and without witnesses, it was possible for individuals to be incriminated and convicted of a crime. The punishments for this offense changed over the years, and by the 20th century, it carried a prison sentence. However, in 1967, consensual relationships between older men were finally legalized.

"My Policeman" portrays a love triangle involving two men and a woman, against a particular backdrop.

Tom Burgess was never an ordinary man. When they were young, Sylvie warned her best friend Marion not to be swayed by Tom's good looks. However, Marion couldn't resist his charm and personality, and her love for him grew deeper as they entered their teenage years.

Tom and Marion were friends, but they lost touch when Tom joined the army, and Marion began studying and teaching. After Tom returned and joined the police force, they rekindled their friendship and started meeting regularly. Marion had feelings for Tom and believed he was too shy to make a move, so when he proposed, she accepted without hesitation. Despite Sylvie, Tom's sister, warning her about potential issues, Marion chose to ignore the warning signs and continued with the relationship.

Tom reconnects with Marion while simultaneously meeting Patrick, an elderly and sensitive art curator who has experienced a tragic event in his past. Initially, Patrick is hesitant in his interactions with Tom, but Tom develops feelings for him and is determined to make their relationship work.

The story moves back and forth between two timelines. The present timeline is set in 1999, where Marion is taking care of Patrick who is in a serious nursing condition after having a stroke. Marion insists that Patrick stays with them and they take care of him. The past timeline is set between 1956 and 1959 and is told from the perspective of Marion. In this timeline, Marion writes a long, confessional letter to her husband, Tom, about the past events. Additionally, Patrick's diary provides his perspective on the events and completes the story.

Throughout the series, Tom never speaks, except for when his voice is heard through Marion or Patrick, who are both in love with him.

In the beginning, I was confused as to why the author had chosen a plot that silenced Tom. However, as I continued to read through the book, I gradually came to the realization that the true strength of the novel lies in the fact that the reader is not privy to Tom's perspective or any explanations from him.

Their unfulfilled desires and frustration leave Tom, Marion, and Patrick feeling lonely and sad, resulting in a tragic plot.

While reading, I couldn't help feeling angry with Tom. The fact that he never spoke up made my resentment towards him even stronger. He is the main cause of the catastrophe that unfolds in the story. The injustices he inflicts upon Marion, and to a lesser extent upon Patrick, outraged me. I was also shocked by his unwillingness to take responsibility for his actions. Throughout the story, he deceives Marion, takes advantage of her love for him, and treats her as if she is delusional or imagining things, all while robbing her of what little she could have received from him or someone else if she had left him. Later, his unwillingness to talk to or participate in Patrick's care, even when he was clearly dying, infuriated me.

I felt sorry for Marion and Patrick. Although they were not perfect, they did not deserve a life of misery.

The book is based on the relationship between A. M. Forrester and Bob Buckingham, a London police officer. According to Wikipedia, their friendship lasted for about 40 years, during which Forrester also became close with Bob's wife, May.

The book is intelligent, touching and definitely worth reading.
