"The Turkish Gambit" is the second book in a highly popular series that follows the story of the Russian detective, Erast Fandorin. The plot of the book is derived from real historical events and characters that were involved in the Russo-Turkish War. In the year 1877, Fandorin is still recovering from the events of the previous book, in which he lost his beloved wife. He has been called upon to advise on an unknown affair related to the Russo-Turkish War. This war marked the beginning of the decline of the Ottoman Empire, as the Balkan countries rebelled one after the other against the Ottoman ruler. It also highlights the extent of the control madness of the Russian Tsar, who aimed to reach Constantinople but was stopped by the powers that imposed a new order on him.
On his way to the Bulgarian front, Erast Fandorin encounters Varvara Suvorova, a progressive and liberated girl who is on her way to meet her fiancé. However, upon arriving at the camp, they discover that there is a spy in the Russian camp who is leaking the Russian strategy for the occupation to the Turks. Varvara's fiancé is suspected of being the spy, and she teams up with Erast Fandorin to uncover the true culprit.
The story is narrated from Varvara's point of view as she becomes increasingly entangled in political intrigues and conspiracies. Her character is sincere, yet mixed with captivating innocence.
The colorful variety of characters and Fandorin's thoughtful analyses provide intellectual pleasure in this accurate historical investigation.
The superb translation enhances the reader's enjoyment of both the plot and the characters.
