כשהיא פוגשת את פלג מנשה דדון, מתרגם מוכשר אך מכוער, נפשה נקשרת בשלו. פלג שמתגורר בביניין של אימא של נועה, מנסה במשך שנים לפרסם ספר שכתב וכבר כל ההוצאות דחו אותו. יד המקרה מובילה את פלג לעזור לגב’ וולף, השכנה הזקנה, ניצולת שואה. גב’ וולף משתתפת בסדנה של נועה ומסתבר שאלת המזל משחקת לפני פלג כי אותה הגב’ שמרה יומנים מתקופת השואה. כשהוא מציע לה לכתוב את זיכרונותיה היא גם נענית לו.

סוף – סוף פלג מנשה דדון מקבל את ההזדמנות האמיתית שלו להיות סופר.

אבל אז, השכנים שמשתתפים בסדנה של נויה מתחילים למות מיתות מוזרות ובלתי מוסברות אחד אחרי השני. אולי יש למיתות האלה קשר לקרב הדמים על ביצוע תמ”א 38 בביניין? ואולי לא.

פלג מפרסם את ספר הזיכרונות של הגב’ וולף תחת שמו וזוכה להצלחה מסחררת והעולם של נויה נכנס לסיחרור.

לימור נחמיאס היא סופרת צינית ומושחזת. היא מבתרת את עולם התרבות והספרות באיזמל מנתחים חד. סצנת הרווקות התל אביבית מעולם לא נראיתה עגומה ומייאשת יותר מאשר דרך עיניה של נויה.

כאשר אחת המשתתפות בסדנה מתלוננת שאין לה דימויים ותיאורי נוף, היא מציעה לה להעתיק כאלה בשכל ככה שלא יעלו עליה:

“את ה’חטא ועונשו’ אף אחד לא קרא עד הסוף, וגם מי שקרא לא זוכר מילה במילה את הדימויים והתיאורים כי זה מאות עמודים. תעתיקי תיאור נוף פה תיאור נוף שם ותטשטשי עקבות.””

עולם הרגש של הסופרים מאוכלס רק בהערצה לעצמם ולכישרונם, הם מתקשים לפרגן לקולגות שלהם ואפילו לבני זוגם ובינם ובין עצמם הם אוהבים לדבר סרה בסופרים אחרים.

“וכך המשיך זוג האוהבים לשוחח ולהתווכח ולא הגיע להסכמה, וכשהסתיימה השיחה בטונים מרים ונעלבים, פנו איש לחדרו לכתוב ספר שיהיה מוצלח יותר מזה של רעהו.”

קשה לי לכתוב שמדובר בספר מתח, או בספר מותח. הוא לא זה ולא זה. עלילת המתח היא שולית לסיפור האנושי, לדמויות הססגוניות והצבעוניות ולעיסוק של נחמיאס בעולם התרבות והספרות, באופי של הסופרים ובתהליכי הכתיבה. במובן זה, תעלומת המתח פחות העסיקה אותי ופחות התעיניינתי בפתרון שהיא תציע.

יחד עם זאת נהנתי מהספר הזה יותר מספרים אחרים שלה שקראתי. נהנתי מהשנינות והאבחנות החדות על הדמויות השונות שמאכלסות את העלילה. נהנתי אפילו מכך שהיא משחיזה את סכין המנתחים שלה על עולם הספרות ועל סופרים למרות שחלק מהאבחנות שלה אינן חדשות.

Noya Blizovsky is a writer of light, successful thriller novels. She also conducts workshops for elderly neighbors in her mother’s apartment building, who dream of becoming successful thriller writers like her in their golden years. At 35, Noya has devoted years of energy to her thriving career. After a failed relationship with Moav, a successful writer in his own right, she longs for a relationship with a writer who understands her, gives her the space she needs while writing, and, significantly, whose ego won’t conflict with hers.

Their souls connect when she encounters Peleg Menashe Dadon, a skilled but unappealing translator. Peleg, who lives in Noya’s mother’s building, has been attempting to publish a book that has faced rejection from every publisher for years. He helps Mrs. Wolf, an elderly Holocaust survivor residing nearby. Mrs. Wolf participated in Noya’s workshop; by chance, she kept diaries from the Holocaust. When he proposes to write her memoirs, she consents.

Finally, Peleg Menashe Dadon receives his genuine opportunity to become an author.

However, the neighbors involved in Noya’s workshop begin to die under mysterious and unexplained circumstances, one after the other. Could these deaths be linked to the bloody struggle over the building’s urban renewal project (TAMA 38)? Or perhaps not.

Peleg publishes Mrs. Wolf’s memoir under his name, which achieves overwhelming success. Then, Noya’s world starts spinning out of control.

Limor Nechmias is a sharp, cynical author who dissects literary cultures with a surgeon’s scalpel. From Noya’s perspective, the Tel Aviv singles scene has never seemed more gloomy and desperate.

When a workshop participant expresses frustration about the lack of imagery and landscape descriptions, she cleverly proposes copying them without being caught: “Nobody has read ‘Crime and Punishment’ all the way through, and even those who have don’t remember the imagery and descriptions verbatim because it’s hundreds of pages. Just copy a landscape description here and there and cover your tracks.”

The authors’ emotional landscape is dominated by self-admiration and deep respect for self-talent; they struggle to compliment their colleagues or even their partners, and among themselves, they often belittle other writers.

“Thus, the loving couple continued to engage in discussions and disagreements without finding common ground. When the conversation concluded on a bitter and hurtful note, each retreated to their room to write a book they hoped would be more successful than their partner’s.”

It’s hard to categorize this as a thriller or a suspense novel—it’s neither. The thriller plot takes a backseat to the human story, the vibrant characters, Nechmias’s examination of the cultural and literary world, the personalities of the writers, and their writing processes. As a result, I became less focused on the mystery and less intrigued by its resolution.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book more than her other books. I wanted her wit and sharp observations about the plot’s various characters. I even enjoyed her sharpening her surgical knife on the literary world and writers, despite some of her observations not being new.

It is recommended that you read and embrace the pleasure.
