קראתי שלושה ספרים של יונס יונסון. הראשון שבהם, “הזקן בן המאה שיצא מהחלון ונעלם”, היה משב רוח רענן – מבריק, מופרע ומצחיק עד דמעות. הוא גרם לי להתאהב בסגנונו הייחודי של הסופר ולשמור לו חסד נעורים. אבל אחרי קריאת “הנביאה והאידיוט”, אני לא בטוחה אם החסד הזה עדיין מגיע לו.

יונסון חוזר עם אותה נוסחה: דמויות אקסצנטריות שנקלעות לסיטואציות מופרכות, מסע מטורף עם שלל הסתבכויות, הומור שמנסה להיות חד ושנון, וביקורת חברתית על פוליטיקה, מדע, מדיה חברתית ומה לא. אבל הפעם, אין את החדות והעוקץ. משהו לא עובד.

בקיץ 2011, פֶּטרה, אסטרופיזיקאית מרירה ומיוסרת, הגיעה למסקנה שסוף העולם יתרחש בעוד מספר שבועות. היא זורקת את כל חפציה, עוברת לקרוואן, שותה ללא הפסקה וממתינה לאפוקליפסה. ערב אחד, בעודה בגילופין, היא פוגשת את יוהן, שף מופנם וחסר כישורים חברתיים, שמאז שאחיו המושחת מכר את דירתם המשפחתית נותר חסר כל.

פטרה משכנעת את יוהן שסוף העולם עומד להגיע לכן אין לו מה להפסיד, והשניים יוצאים למסע שבמהלכו הם מצרפים אליהם את אגנס – אלמנה בת 75, שהתעשרה על ידי התחזות למשפיענית רשת צעירה. יחד, הם חוצים את אירופה במטרה להתעמת עם אחיו של יוהן, אך כמובן – דבר אינו הולך כמתוכנן.

בכל הקשור להומור סאטירי וביקורת על החברה המודרנית יונסון אינו מאכזב. הוא מתייחס לפחד הקמאי מסוף העולם, להתמכרות האנושית לרשתות חברתיות, לפוליטיקאים ציניים ולשחיתות של האליטות.
הוא יוצר הקבלה בין “דת המדע” ל”דת המשפיענים”:

• פטרה מייצגת את ההיאחזות הבלתי מתפשרת במדע – גם כשהוא מוכיח את עצמו שוב ושוב כלא מדויק.
• אגנס מייצגת את עידן הרשתות החברתיות – זיוף שמזין את ההמונים, שמקבלים כל פיסת מידע נוצצת כאמת מוחלטת.

כל זה נשמע מבטיח, אבל הבעיה היא שהוא כבר כתב את כל זה והרבה יותר טוב. הביקורת על השחיתות, הרדידות של המדיה והפאניקה ההמונית כבר הופיעה בספריו הקודמים – ובאופן חד ומדויק יותר.

הבעיה העיקרית של הספר היא שבמהלך הקריאה הרגשתי שאני מאזינה לכנר שיש לו מיתר יחיד. הפעם המיתר שנותר בכינור של יונסון כבר שחוק.

• המסע המטורף? ✔️
• דמויות מוזרות שנקלעות לצרות ומוצאות להן פתרון בדרך לא הגיונית? ✔️
• ריבוי צירופי מקרים אבסורדיים, כולל מפגש הזוי עם אובמה? ✔️

כשהנוסחה הזו הופיעה לראשונה, היא הייתה מבריקה. עכשיו היא צפויה ומאומצת.

כן, יש קטעים שמעלים חיוך, אבל קשה לומר שהספר באמת מצחיק. בניגוד ל”הזקן בן המאה”, שבו ההומור טבעי וגרם לי לצחוק עד דמעות, כאן התחושה היא שיונסון מנסה בכוח לשחזר את הקסם – ולא תמיד מצליח.

בשורה התחתונה –

“הנביאה והאידיוט” מנסה להיות סאטירה נוקבת עם דמויות ססגוניות והרפתקה בלתי נשכחת. בפועל, החזרה על רעיונות ישנים, לעיתים מייגעת ולא משעשעת.

אם לא קראתם אף ספר של יונסון קודם, ייתכן שתיהנו מהאבסורד וההומור. אבל אם כבר קראתם, ייתכן שתרגישו, כמוני, שדי כבר שמענו את הבדיחה הזו.

I’ve read three books by Jonas Jonasson. The first, The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared, was a breath of fresh air—brilliant, absurd, and laugh-out-loud funny. It made me fall in love with his unique style and appreciate his witty storytelling. However, after reading The Prophet and the Idiot, I’m not sure that admiration is still warranted.

Jonasson returns with his usual formula: eccentric characters caught in absurd situations, a wild journey filled with complications, humor that aims to be sharp and witty, and social satire on politics, science, social media, and more. However, this time, something felt amiss. The sharpness, the sting—it’s simply not there. Something doesn’t quite click.

The Story in Brief

In the summer of 2011, Petra, a bitter and tormented astrophysicist, concludes that the world will end in weeks. She sells all her possessions, moves into a caravan, drinks heavily, and waits for the apocalypse. One drunken evening, she meets Johan, an introverted and socially awkward chef who has been homeless since his corrupt brother sold their family apartment.

Petra persuades Johan that he has nothing to lose since the world is ending. The two embark on a journey, soon joined by Agnes—a 75-year-old widow who grew wealthy by pretending to be a young social media influencer. Together, they travel across Europe to confront Johan’s brother, but nothing goes as planned.

Satire That Feels Like a Rerun

When it comes to satirical humor and critiques of modern society, Jonasson does not disappoint. He addresses the primal fear of the apocalypse, humanity’s addiction to social media, cynical politicians, and the corruption of the elite. He draws a parallel between the “Religion of Science” and the “Religion of Influencers:”

Petra strongly believes in science, even when reality consistently shows that calculations can be wrong.

Agnes embodies the digital age—where deception feeds the masses, who accept every shiny piece of information as absolute truth.

This all sounds promising, but the issue is that Jonasson has already tackled these themes and did so much more effectively in the past. His critiques of corruption, media shallowness, and mass hysteria were sharper and significantly impacted his earlier works.

The Biggest Problem: A One-String Violin

The main issue with the book is that it feels like listening to a violin with only one string—Jonasson’s violin’s other string is frayed.

• The adventurous road trip? ✔️
• Unusual characters who get into trouble and somehow manage to escape? ✔️
• A string of strange coincidences, including a surreal meeting with Obama? ✔️

When this formula first emerged, it was brilliant. Now, it seems predictable and contrived.

And the Humor?

Yes, some moments bring a smile, but it’s challenging to say the book is funny. Unlike The Hundred-Year-Old Man, where the humor felt effortless and made me laugh out loud, here, Jonasson seems to be trying too hard to recapture the magic—and it doesn’t always succeed.

Bottom Line

The Prophet and the Idiot aims to be a sharp satire with colorful characters and an unforgettable adventure. In reality, repeating old ideas can feel tedious rather than amusing.

If you’ve never read a Jonasson book before, you might appreciate the absurdity and humor. But if you have, you may find yourself, like I do, thinking—haven’t we already heard this joke?
