בתקופה האחרונה קראתי הרבה ספרי פנטזיה ובהמשך גם אפרסם סקירות על כל הספרים שקראתי. בגלל שזה אחד מהז’אנרים החביבים עליי, אני לא בוחלת בקריאת כל ספר שמוגדר בסוגה, גם ספרי נוער. “אוקסה פולוק – התקווה האחרונה” נחשב לספר נוער/ נוער צעיר.

למרות ההבטחה הגלומה בספר – מכשפות, קסמים, מרדפים, רעים מול טובים והחשוב מכל, תירגם אותו המתרגם החביב עליי מכל – שי סנדיק – הספר לא מספק את הסחורה ואין לי מושג אם בכלל אמשיך לספר הבא.

או‏קסה פולוק היא נערה רגילה בת השלוש-עשרה. הוריה פותחים מסעדה בלונדון לכן, היא והוריה עוברים מצרפת ללונדון . יחד איתה עובר החבר הטוב שלה מילדות, גוס. כאשר אוקסה מתחילה ללמוד בבית הספר החדש, היא מבחינה שאחד המורים, פרופסור מקגרו, מתייחס אליה מוזר. הוא עויין אותה והיא מקבלת ממנו מסרים עויינים ומטרידים.

לאחר שהיא מצוטטת לשיחה בין הוריה, דברים מתחילים להשתנות אצל אוקסה. החרדה והמתח גורמים לגוף שלה להתנהג בצורה מוזרה עד שלילה אחד מופיע סימן כחול על בטנה. אוקסה שלא יכולה לדבר עם הוריה, פונה לסבתא שלה, דרגומירה, וזו מגלה לה שהיא נצר למשפחת המלוכה של אדפיה – עולם חבוי שתושביו ניחנו ביכולת הקסם. שליט אכזרי ובוגדני השתלט על אדפיה, ומשפחתה של אוקסה נמלטה משם.

למעשה אוקסה היא המלכה האחרונה של אדפיה והיא התקווה האחרונה של בני אדפיה הגולים לחזור לממלכתם.

אתחיל מציון העובדה הברורה מאליה, שמדובר בספר ארוך מ-א-ו-ד. גם בסטנדרטים של ספרי מבוגרים, מדובר בספר ארוך, כל שכן בסטנדרטים של בני נוער. זו אחת המכשלות שלו ולא המכשלה הכי קשה.

בהתאם האקספוזיציה בלתי נגמרת. במהלכה לא ברור לקורא מה בדיוק הבעיה של אוקסה ושל המשפחה שלה, לא ברור מדוע המורה שלה עוין אותה ולא ברור מדוע אוקסה לא משתפת את ההורים שלה באירועים שעוברים עליה בבית הספר.

כשהעלילה מתחילה להתקדם, ההתנהגות של אוקסה ילדותית ולא תואמת את הגיל שלה. היא קפריזית, סובלת מטנטרום ואימפולסיבית. היא כל הזמן על סף גרימת נזק וחבלה לעצמה ולבני משפחתה והיא לא מפסיקה להיות סיכון. בהשוואה להארי פוטר (השוואה מתבקשת שהרבה סוקרים מתייחסים אליה) אוקסה פולוק היא בת דמותו של הבלתי נסבל. בניגוד להארי פוטר, היתום, האדיב, השקט והצנוע, אוקסה פולוק מעצבנת, גאוותנית ובלתי נסבלת ברמות שמספר פעמים כמעט הפסקתי לקרוא את הספר.

בנוסף, הספר סובל מעושר מילולי גדול מידי ומהר מידי. העולם הפנטסטי לא נבנה בהדרגתיות הוא פשוט נופל על הקוראים כמו שהוא נופל על אוקסה. מרגע שאוקסה מגלה את היכולות שלה, ומרגע שבו סבתא שלה מספרת לה על המקורות המשפחתיים שלה, צצים בכל עמוד חדשות לבקרים יצורים חדשים ובלתי מוכרים. באופן דומה גם חפצים ומצבים נפשיים צצים. קשה להאמין שכל זה היה נסתר שלוש עשרה שנים מאוקסה ומאמא שלה (שגם היא הופתעה מהבשורות על הדם המלכותי שזורם בבת שלה) כי כל זה מתרחש כביכול בעולם שלנו, לא באדפיה. העומס הזה ואיתו חוסר האמינות הולכים ומתגברים ככל שהספר מתקדם (ויש לו הרבה לאן להתקדם ב -600 העמודים שלו.)

בשלב מסויים העלילה דורכת במקום ולא מתקדמת. היא בעיקר מדגימה את היכולות החדשות של אוקסה שהופכת להיות קירקס של אדם אחד.

הנקודה האחרונה שאני רוצה להתייחס אליה הוא הדמיון להארי פוטר. ג’יי קי רולינג עשתה את זה הרבה יותר טוב. הארי פוטר זכה להתבגר כדי לפגוש את הרוע וגם זכה למדריכים רוחניים שיעזרו לו להתמודד איתו. הצניעות הטבעית של הדמות אפשרה למיליוני קוראים להתחבר אליו. אוקסה היא שום דבר מכל אלה.

כמו שכתבתי, אני לא יודעת אם אמשיך לספר הבא בסידרה. הספר והדמות של אוקסה כל כך עייפו אותי שאני בספק אם ארצה לחזור על החוויה הזו.

אוקסה פולוק #1

Lately, I’ve been reading many fantasy books and plan to publish reviews of all the titles I’ve explored. Since fantasy is one of my favorite genres, I eagerly dive into any book categorized as such, including young adult fiction. Oksa Pollock—The Last Hope is classified as a young adult/middle-grade book.

Despite the promise of witches, magic, chases, good versus evil, and, most importantly, being translated by my favorite translator, Shai Sendik, the book doesn’t deliver. I’m unsure if I’ll continue to the next one.

Oksa Pollock is a typical thirteen-year-old girl. Her parents opened a restaurant in London, prompting her and her family to move from France to London. Her childhood best friend, Gus, relocates with her. As Oksa begins attending her new school, she notices that one of the teachers, Professor McGraw, treats her oddly. He is hostile toward her, and she receives menacing and unsettling messages from him.

After overhearing a conversation between her parents, Oksa’s life takes a turn. Anxiety and stress cause her body to behave unusually until one night, a blue mark appears on her stomach. Unable to confide in her parents, Oksa seeks solace from her grandmother, Dragomira, who discloses that she is a descendant of the royal family of Edefia. In this hidden world, its inhabitants possess magical abilities. A cruel and treacherous ruler seized control of Edefia, prompting Oksa’s family to flee.

Oksa is the final queen of Edefia and the last hope for the exiled people of Edefia to reclaim their kingdom.

This book is quite lengthy, even compared to adult novels, and it is even longer about young adult literature. This is one of its drawbacks, although not the most significant.

As a result, the exposition feels endless. Throughout this period, it remains unclear to the reader what exactly Oksa’s issues are, what her family’s problems entail, why her teacher is confrontational, and why Oksa doesn’t confide in her parents about the incidents occurring at school.

As the plot unfolds, Oksa’s behavior appears childish and doesn’t align with her age. She is capricious, prone to tantrums, and impulsive. She remains on the brink of causing harm to herself and her family members, continuously posing a risk. Compared to Harry Potter (an inevitable comparison made by many reviewers), Oksa Pollock represents the unbearable. Unlike Harry Potter, the orphan who is kind, quiet, and modest, Oksa Pollock comes across as annoying, arrogant, and so excruciating that I nearly stopped reading the book several times.

Additionally, the book suffers from excessive and rushed verbal richness. The fantastic world isn’t built gradually; it falls upon the readers like Oksa. When Oksa discovers her abilities and her grandmother reveals her family origins, new and unfamiliar creatures emerge on every page. Similarly, various objects and mental states appear. It’s hard to believe that all of this was hidden from Oksa and her mother for thirteen years (who was also taken aback by the revelation of her daughter’s royal blood), mainly since this supposedly occurs in our world, not in Edefia. This overload, coupled with a lack of credibility, intensifies as the book progresses (and it has considerable room for development in its 600 pages).

At some point, the plot stalls and fails to progress. It showcases Oksa’s new abilities, transforming her into a one-person circus.

The final point I want to address is the similarity to Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling executed it far better. Harry Potter had the opportunity to grow up before confronting evil and was also supported by spiritual mentors to help him manage it. The character’s inherent modesty enabled millions of readers to relate to him. Oksa lacks all of these qualities.

As I mentioned, I’m unsure if I’ll proceed to the next book in the series. The story and Oksa’s character drained me so much that I doubt I’ll want to go through this experience again.
