Whistler / Ann Patchett
I am ambivalent about Ann Patchett. Her books range for me from mediocre to very good, and I never know in advance what I am going to get. Even with "Whistler", during the first half, I could not understand what all the fuss was about. A grown woman meets her former stepfather again after forty-four years apart, and their relationship resumes as though no time has passed. Beautiful and touching, yes, but what is revolutionary about that? Real love can survive years of separation. That is hardly a new idea.
Then the second half arrived and changed everything I had already read.
Spoilers from here.
Daphne was a child when Eddie was married to her mother. The marriage ended, and Eddie disappeared from her life. Gradually, we discover why: Eddie is gay, and Daphne's mother discovered that he had renewed his relationship with Skip, a friend from university, even though he had promised her he would not. She did not want only a good man who loved her daughters. She wanted him to love her the way he loved Skip, and that was something he could not give her.
At first I thought she was asking for too much. Eddie seemed to me like the perfect man. But from her point of view, he genuinely could not be enough. And for Eddie to give her what she wanted, he would have had to give up an essential part of himself.
Daphne's biological father occupies a relatively small place in her life. Eddie, by contrast, was present for only a short period and became deeply imprinted on her. Patchett shows how incomplete biology and the length of a relationship can be as measures of the importance a person acquires in our lives.
And then there is Whistler. When Daphne was a child, Eddie told her a story about a woman who was thrown from her horse and left injured and alone until the horse returned to her. In the first half of the novel, it seems like a reassuring story an adult tells a frightened child. In the second half, Patchett reveals what actually happened: on the way to the raspberry farm, they were in a car accident. Eddie was badly injured, snow began to fall, and no one passed by. Nine-year-old Daphne climbed out of the car alone into the cold to look for help. And she found it. No one in the family ever knew what she had done.
Daphne is Whistler. The adult who is supposed to save the child is the one left behind, and the child is the one who goes to save him. That is what bound them together, and no divorce could undo it.
In the present, Eddie has chronic leukemia and is undergoing chemotherapy. A chance encounter on the street brings Daphne back into his life, and she stays beside him. The child went to find help because she had no choice. The woman returns because she chooses him.
Skip stays too. He and his wife are almost the only family Eddie has. Daphne, Skip, his wife and Eddie form a family made up of people who simply remain, and of love expressed through ordinary acts of care.
"Whistler" builds slowly, and only at the end do you understand how deeply it has already worked its way inside you. People can disappear from our lives without disappearing from us.
