The Magician / Rebecca Serle

"No," עונה סנדרה. "But I'm worried they'll see it."

The Magician / Rebecca Serle

"The Magician" is a short story from the "Good Intentions" collection. Sandra Kramer, a magician who has been performing at the Cherry Lane Theatre for fifteen years, announces that she is retiring and moving to Santa Fe with her partner. Her daughter Charlie is pregnant, stuck with her husband in an apartment with leaking pipes and a contractor who has disappeared, and has trouble imagining New York without her mother. To Charlie, the two of them have always been part of the same landscape.

Sandra's act is simple: she flies. No wires, no darkened theater. At the beginning of every performance, an announcement assures the audience that everything they are about to see is real and that no explanation will be given. No explanation is given to Charlie either, despite the fact that she spent her entire childhood looking for wires and hidden doors. I did not need one. Serle leaves the question of whether the levitation is real open, and rightly so. What interests her is levitation as a profession. Hard, sustained work, just as Charlie says of the apartment her mother bought after twenty years of dreaming.

The best moment in the story comes when Charlie asks whether her mother is afraid she will no longer be able to do it. "No," Sandra answers. "But I'm worried they'll see it." The effort. And Charlie adds to herself: the first rule of magic is effortlessness.

Sandra can still fly. What she has lost is the ability to hide the cost. A woman who built an entire career on the illusion of effortlessness leaves the stage when the effort begins to show. It can be read as pride, or as respect for her profession. I read something about parenthood in it.

And then there is the audience. Charlie has never sat in the front row because she was afraid her mother would treat her like any other member of the audience. Once, she spent hours watching footage of the crowds at her mother's performances, trying to understand what strangers saw in her and whether they felt as close to her as Charlie did. Her answer to herself is the most important sentence in the story: she did not want to be another member of the audience. She wanted to be her daughter.

The pregnancy sharpens this. During the final performance, the baby kicks, and Charlie realizes that her child will never see his grandmother in the air. How will he know me, she wonders, if he does not know her? Just as she is about to become a mother herself, Charlie discovers how much she still needs her own.

After Charlie's first year of college, Sandra established a rule: no tears. Charlie thinks she was right and wrong, because denying grief is like denying love. I like the way Serle leaves both sides open, and I like even more that she does not turn the separation into a disaster. Parents and children are supposed to separate. Sandra leaves, and Charlie and Seth move into her apartment, with her furniture, taking possession of a piece of the life she left behind.

At the end, Sandra calls from Santa Fe and says the stars there are magic. For a moment Charlie thinks her mother has forgotten the definition. Then she asks whether she is up there, and all she hears through the phone is the wind. Serle leaves a small wink behind, and I choose to read it as a metaphor.

A pleasant, likeable story, without any great upheaval. One mother flies off to Santa Fe, one daughter stays on the ground, in her mother's apartment, with a baby on the way. That is how it is supposed to be.
