מהר מאוד וכבר בשלבים הראשונים המסע יוצא משליטה ויורד מהפסים; מונטי מעליב אציל צרפתי, גונב חפץ יקר ונאלץ לברוח כשהוא חצי עירום. הוא וחבורתו מותקפים ע"י שודדי דרכים, נציגי מלך צרפת רודפים אחריהם וגם חוטפים אותם פירטים. ההרפתקה שלהם לוקחת אותם, חסרי כל מעמד או כסף, מצרפת לספרד לאיטליה ליוון, במסע למצוא חפץ אלכימי מיסטי וגם אהבת אמת, חברות וחופש ממוסרות חברתיים.
אחותו, פליסטי, מתגלה כאשת אשכולות רבת יכולות ומעללים ובעיקר היא מתגלה כפמניסטית. מסתבר שהיא גם מבינה לא רע ברפואה וששאיפת חייה להיות רופאה. עוד מסתבר שבניגוד להנחה הראשונית של מונטי, הוא ופרסי כנראה יסיימו את הסיור הזה ולא יפגשו יותר.
המסע לוקח את הגיבורים ואת הקורא איתם לרכבת הרים רגשית שבה הקורא קרוע בין תחושת אי אמון לנוכח המרדפים והבריחות ההרואיות, לבין תחושת הפלצות לנוכח האטימות שיש במונטי סביב תנאי חייו של פרסי לבין אהבה לדמות הססגונית שלו.
המסע של מונטי וחבורתו זוהי הרפתקאה, אבל לא רק. זהו מסע התבגרות לעולם של מבוגרים על כל המשתמע מכך: מעמד פריוולגי, אפליה, גזענות, דעות קדומות נגד הומוסקסואלים ונשים ועוד.
אומנם זה ספר בקטגוריה של נוער אבל הוא גם רומן היסטורי חכם מקסים ומשעשע.

His father gave him one final opportunity to turn his life around before he had to settle down and fulfill his destiny.
Henry is in love with his best friend, Percy, but he faces several obstacles. First, Percy comes from a mixed-race background. Second, he does not belong to the aristocratic class. Third, homosexuality is not accepted in 18th-century England, especially in white and aristocratic circles.
Monty's father tells him and his sister what to do. They have a strict chaperone to make sure his sister, Felisti, gets to school safely in Marseilles and that Monty behaves like a gentleman should. But Monty wants to enjoy life's pleasures before he has to become more serious and responsible. He has one year left to do this before settling down.
The journey through decadent Europe with Persian and Philistine allows Monty and readers to examine inherent stereotypes and preconceived notions.

In the first stages of their journey, things quickly spiral out of control for Monty and his gang. Monty insults a French nobleman and steals a valuable object, which forces them to flee half-naked. On top of that, they are attacked by highwaymen, pursued by representatives of the King of France, and even kidnapped by pirates. Despite having no status or money, they embark on an adventure that takes them from France to Spain, Italy, and Greece. Their goal is to find a mystical alchemical object, and along the way, they also hope to discover true love, friendship, and freedom from social norms.
Monty's sister, Philisti, is a talented woman who is accomplished in many areas. She is also a feminist who aspires to become a doctor. Monty had assumed he and Percy would reunite after their tour, but it seems unlikely now.
The story takes the readers on an emotional ride along with the heroes as they experience thrilling chases and escapes. However, the readers may also feel conflicted as Monty's character is not entirely transparent about Percy's living conditions and love for him.
The journey of Monty and his gang is an adventure and a coming-of-age story. It explores the complexities of adulthood, including privilege, discrimination, and prejudice against marginalized groups.
Although classified as a youth book, this charming and entertaining novel also has historical value.
