אריק לארסון כותב ספרי היסטוריה עיוניים שנמסרים לקורא כפרוזה. קראתי 2 ספרים מפרי עטו, האחד היה מוצלח מאוד, השני פחות. “השטן בעיר הלבנה” עוד ספר היסטורי עיוני, שכנראה כיכב בכל מצעדי המכירות והיה לרב מכר כשיצא בארה”ב.
הספר עוסק במקביל בשתי פרשיות שאירעו בשיקגו בין 1890 – 1893:
האירוע הראשון, התערוכה הקולומביאנית שהפכה למפעל אדריכלי אדיר מימדים במרכזו “העיר הלבנה” ששכנה על שפת לגונה מלאכותית. את “העיר הלבנה” תכנן האדריכל דניאל ברנהם שצירף אליו אנשי מקצוע מהשורה הראשונה. התערוכה כללה גלגל ענק שהיה אחת האטרקציות המרכזיות ולסיפורו ולסיפור הפעלתו מקדיש הסופר חלקים נרחבים (שכוללים בין היתר את פירוקו ומכירתו). על התערוכה ניתן לקרוא בהרחבה בוויקפדיה, לרסון מתמקד בקשיים התכנוניים והכלכליים שליוו את הקמת התערוכה.
האירוע השני, רחש מתחת לפני השטח והיה הרבה יותר אפל, מעניין ומרתק – צמיחתו של אחד מהרוצחים הסידרתיים הידועים ביותר בהיסטוריה של ארה”ב – ד”ר הרמן ובסטר מאדג’אט, או כפי שכונה ה. ה. הולמס.
אותו הולמס היה טיפוס כריזמטי ומושך. הוא פיתח שיטה לצוד את קורבנותיו, נשים, אבל לא רק, שאותן היה משכנע לעשות ביטוח חיים שנרשם על שמו ואז היה רוצח אותן ופושט את עורן. בעידן שבו היתה מצוקה אמיתית של גופות לצרכי מדע, הוא מכר את הגופות של קורבנותיו לבתי ספר לרפואה וגבה את כספי ביטוח החיים.
בהמשך הוא שיכלל את השיטה, כאשר בנה בית מלון לאורחי התערוכה, ובו היה רוצח את קורבנותיו.
בפרקים מתחלפים מספר לארסון את סיפור צמחיתה של “העיר הלבנה” במקביל לצמיחתו של הפסיכופת הרצחני. הסיפור של ה.ה. הולמס הרבה יותר מעניין ולטעמי היה ניתן להסתפק בסיפור מעלליו של הולמס. בחלקים שהוא יורד לפרטי פרטים בבניית היריד העולמי, הספר שוקע למקצב מונוטוני שלפעמים גם נופל לשיעמום.
אציין כי אין שום דבר משותף לדניאל ברנהם ול-ה.ה. הולמס למעט שהותם באותה העיר באותו הזמן והשילוב בין הסיפורים לדעתי האישית הוריד מאיכות הספר שיכלה להתקבל לו היה מתעמק באחד הנושאים.
יחד עם זאת, בחלקים המתייחסים להולמס, הסיפור קיצבי, מותח ואף די מורט עצבים ככל ששחשיפתו וחשיפת פשעיו מתקרבת. שווה לקרוא רק בכדי לגלות כיצד הפשעים המושלמים שלו נחשפו.

I have enjoyed reading two historical books by Erik Larson, which are in prose format. While one is highly recommended, the other has a less impressive reception. “The Devil in the White City” is another excellent Non-fiction historical book that undoubtedly topped the sales charts and became a bestseller upon its release in the USA.
This book covers two events that occurred in Chicago during the years 1890 to 1893.
The first event was the Colombian exhibition, which later became a massive architectural project. It revolved around the “White City,” situated on the brink of an artificial lagoon, designed by architect Daniel Burnham, who collaborated with a team of experts. Among the exhibition’s main highlights was a colossal wheel, which the author has elaborately described, including its functioning, removal, and sale. While Wikipedia provides further details on the event, Larson’s account mainly delves into the challenges in planning and financing the exhibition.
The second event rumbled under the surface and was much darker, exciting, and fascinating – the growth of one of the most well-known serial killers in the history of the USA – Dr. Herman Webster Madgett, or as he was called the. H.H. Holmes.
Holmes was charismatic and attractive. He developed a method of hunting his victims, women, but not only women, whom he would convince to take out life insurance registered in his name, and then he would murder them and strip their skin. In an era where there was a real shortage of corpses for scientific purposes, he sold the bodies of his victims to medical schools and collected the life insurance money.
Later he perfected the method when he built a hotel for the exhibition’s guests, where he would murder his victims.
In alternating chapters, Larson tells the story of the growth of the “White City” at the same time as the growth of the murderous psychopath. The story of H.H. Holmes is much more interesting, and it would have been satisfying with the level of Holmes’ exploits. In the parts where he goes into detail about the construction of the World’s Fair, the book sinks into a monotonous rhythm that sometimes also falls into boredom.
I will point out that Daniel Burnham and H.H. have nothing in common. Except for their being in the same city at the same time. The combination of the stories lowered the book’s quality that could have been received if it had delved into one of the topics.
At the same time, in the parts that refer to Holmes, the story is fast-paced, suspenseful, and even quite nerve-wracking as his revelation and the revelation of his crimes gets closer. It’s worth reading to discover how his perfect crimes were revealed.
