The Accidental Life of Greg Millar
The Accidental Life of Greg Millar / Aimee Alexander
The Accidental Life of Greg Millar begins almost like a romance novel.
After her fiancé's death, Lucy Arigho isn't looking for love. She is immersed in her work, still grieving, and trying to maintain some appearance of an ordinary life.
Then she meets Greg Millar.
He is a writer, a widower, a father of two, charismatic, funny, and full of energy. Their relationship moves quickly, and Lucy is drawn into family life before she has even had time to decide whether she really wants to become part of it.
After two months, Greg proposes to Lucy, and they travel to France for a holiday.
What initially looks like spontaneity and romance gradually becomes something else entirely.
Greg becomes less predictable. His behavior grows more extreme. His decisions become increasingly difficult to understand.
And Lucy, already attached to him and his children, has to work out what is happening inside the family she entered almost by accident. This adds an element of mystery. Like Lucy, the reader gathers clues and tries to understand where they are leading.
This is where the book shifts from a relationship novel into a darker story about trust, responsibility, and the thin line between loving someone and trying to save them.
One of the book’s greatest strengths is how convincingly it describes the loss of stability within a family. There is a growing sense that something is wrong, while neither Lucy nor the reader can yet give it a name.
In the middle of all this are Greg’s two children. They live with insecurity, through the same changes, in a home where the adults around them can't always protect them from the chaos.
Lucy is expected to become the most stable person in a system she isn't even sure she wants to be part of. The book examines how chronic illness affects family life: the children, the person entering the family from outside and trying to understand its rules, and the narrow space between loving someone and being able to cope with what that love demands.
Added to all this is Hillary, the children’s nanny, who undermines Lucy’s position and adds another layer of tension to a family already full of suspicion, anger, and insecurity.
This is not an easy book to read. Reading it feels like an emotional roller coaster.
Something deeply unsettling is how a relationship can change without anyone noticing the exact moment the line between ordinary difficulty and a situation requiring outside intervention is crossed.
The question that hovers over the book is how well we ever truly know someone we love, and what happens when that person’s reality begins to change in front of us and pulls our own life into the turmoil with it.
This is a book about love. Just not the kind that promises love will solve everything.
