אהבה לא בתפריט עייף אותי.

559 עמודים. באמת.

במרכז הספר עומדים ג'וליה ורומיאו, שני אנשים שנפגשים בתוך עולם של מסעדנות, משפחה, סודות והרבה מאוד משיכה שהם מנסים לא לסבך יותר מדי.

רומיאו מקסים. יש לו הומור, סבלנות ורגישות. ג'וליה חדה, מצחיקה, סגורה יותר, עם היסטוריה שמסבירה היטב למה היא שומרת מרחק ולמה אינטימיות אמיתית מסבכת אותה הרבה יותר ממשיכה.

הדינמיקה ביניהם טובה. הדיאלוגים משעשעים. לקינגסלי יש דמיון והיא יודעת לייצר סיטואציות עם פוטנציאל.

ועדיין, משהו לא ניגן לי.

בשלב מסויים הרגשתי שהספר נגרר ומתארך. ההתרחשויות לא הוסיפו לעומק של העלילה. שוב ושוב נדמה שהנה, משהו זז, שהיחסים עומדים להיכנס להילוך אחר, ואז הספר חוזר להסתובב סביב עצמו.

ואז הגיעה סצנה אחת שפשוט שברה לי את רצף הקריאה.

אני קוראת ומביימת את הספר בראש תוך כדי קריאה.

הסצנה הזאת לא עברה אצלי את מבחן הבימוי.

משהו בלוגיקה של התנועה, של הגוף ושל הסיטואציה פשוט לא הסתדר לי. במקום להישאר בתוך המתח הרומנטי, התחלתי לפרק את הסצנה ולבדוק איך היא בכלל אמורה לעבוד.

מרגע שזה קרה, הסרט הפנימי התחיל לגמגם.

וזה קטלני במיוחד ברומנס, כי כל המנוע של הספר הוא הכימיה בין שתי הדמויות והיכולת להאמין בקרבה שנבנית ביניהן.

קינגסלי יודעת לכתוב. יש לה קול. יש לה רעיונות טובים. רומיאו דמות מוצלחת מאוד וג'וליה מעניינת.

ועדיין, הרגשתי שהספר לא מספיק מהודק, מערכת היחסים לא מספיק מנגנת והמנוע משתעל.
559 עמודים זה המון זמן לחכות שהמנוע יתניע.

קראתי עד הסוף. אני יודעת שיש קוראות שהרגישו שהספר משתפר לקראת הסיום. אצלי שום דבר לא באמת התרומם. פשוט הגעתי לשם.

חבל.

Love Off the Menu / Felicia Kingsley

Love Off the Menu exhausted me.

559 pages. Really.

At the center of the novel are Julia and Romeo, two people who meet in a world of restaurants, family, secrets, and a great deal of attraction that neither of them wants to complicate too much.

Romeo is charming. He is funny, patient, and sensitive. Julia is sharper, funnier, and more guarded, with a history that explains why she keeps people at a distance and why real intimacy is much more complicated for her than attraction.

Their dynamic is good. The dialogue is entertaining. Kingsley has imagination, and she knows how to create situations with potential.

And still, something never quite clicked for me.

At a certain point, I felt the book beginning to drag. The events didn't add enough depth to the plot. Again and again, it seemed as though something was finally shifting, that the relationship was about to move into a different gear, and then the book went back to circling around itself.

Then one scene completely broke the flow for me.

When I read, I direct the book in my head as I go.

That scene failed the directing test.

Something about the logic of the movement, the bodies, and the situation simply did not work for me. Instead of staying inside the romantic tension, I started taking the scene apart and trying to understand how it was physically supposed to work.

From that moment, the internal film stuttered.

And that is especially damaging in a romance, because the entire engine of the book is the chemistry between the two characters and the reader’s ability to believe in the intimacy developing between them.

Kingsley can write. She has a voice. She has good ideas. Romeo is a very successful character, and Julia is interesting.

Still, I felt the book wasn't tight enough; the relationship never quite found its rhythm, and the engine kept sputtering.

559 pages is a very long time to wait for the engine to start.

I read all the way to the end. I know some readers felt the book improved in the final stretch.

For me, nothing really lifted.

I simply arrived there.

What a shame.
