התחלתי את הספר הזה במסגרת חגיגת Stuff Your Kindle, והוא אכן תאם את רוח האירוע: ספר קליל, זמני, ולא מחייב. לצערי, גם לא מספק במיוחד.
הספר פותח סדרה בשם Black Ridge Bears, שמציבה שתי קבוצות של שיפטרים במרכז: פומות מול דובים. נשמע מופרך? זה עוד לפני שמתחילים לקרוא. סיינט, אחד הדובים, מתרגז על כך שחבורת הפומות מרעישה מדי, ולכן בוחר בפתרון הגיוני במיוחד לרעש שמפריע את תנומתו, לחטוף את הולי, אחת מהפומות. נשמע כמו התחלה של דרמה פנטסטית סוחפת? אז זהו, שלא.
למרות שסיינט מוגדר כ"שיפטר עוצמתי", הוא מבלה את רוב הזמן בניסיון כושל לישון או להבין מה לעשות עם הולי, כשהוא מוסח מריח פירות היער שנודף ממנה. כן, באמת. חבורת הדובים לא מועילה לו, וחבורת הפומות משיבה את הולי, אבל היא, משום מה, כבר מסונוורת מהחוטף שלה וחוזרת אליו ביוזמתה. למה? לא ברור. אהבה ממבט ראשון? או אולי מתסמיני שטוקהולם על סטרואידים.
העלילה צפויה עד כאב, לא מתפתחת באופן מספק, והאלמנט הפנטסטי, השיפטרס, מרגיש דביק ותלוש. אין כמעט שינוי צורה, אין קונפליקט עמוק בין הקבוצות, ואין אפילו ניסיון לעבד את העולם או המיתולוגיה סביבו. כל זה מתנקז למין סצנה לוהטת אחת לקראת הסוף, ולאחריה הכרזה רגשנית על אהבת נצח. יומיים של היכרות הספיקו להם, מסתבר.
האם זה ספר גרוע? לא לגמרי, יש גרועים ממנו. אבל הוא לחלוטין ספר שטוח, חסר מתח, ובעיקר כזה שממחזר קלישאות בז’אנר מבלי לנסות לשבור אותן או להעמיק בהן. גם העובדה שהשאר בסדרה זמינים חינם לא משכנעת אותי להמשיך.
למי שממש משווע לרומנטיקה שיפטרית חורפית עם טוויסט של פירות יער, אולי.
לשאר? אפשר לדלג בלי ייסורי מצפון.

I picked up this book as part of the Stuff Your Kindle event, and it certainly fits the vibe; it is light, temporary, and not particularly satisfying.
This is the first book in the Black Ridge Bears series, which centers around two rival shifter groups – pumas and bears. Sounds absurd? That’s even before the story begins. Saint, one of the bears, gets annoyed that the pumas are too noisy, so he comes up with the very logical solution of kidnapping Holly. Sounds like the start of a gripping fantasy drama? Not exactly.
Despite being described as a "powerful shifter," Saint mostly fails to sleep and is distracted by Holly’s berry-scented fragrance. Yes, really. His bear clan offers no support, and the pumas eventually reclaim Holly. But by then, for some unclear reason, she has already fallen for her captor and voluntarily returns to him. Why? Unclear. Love at first sniff? Or perhaps Stockholm syndrome with extra sugar.
The plot is painfully predictable and doesn’t develop. The shifter element feels flat and tacked on. There’s barely any actual shape-shifting, no real conflict between the groups, and no attempt to build a meaningful world or mythology. Everything culminates in a single steamy scene near the end, followed by an emotional declaration of eternal love. Two days are all it takes.
Is it the worst book ever? Not quite. But it’s shallow, low-stakes, and full of recycled tropes with no desire to challenge or deepen them. The rest of the series may be free, but that’s not enough of a reason to continue.
If you’re craving wintery shifter romance with a hint of berries, maybe.
Everyone else? Skip without regret.
