הספר Stealing Home הוא החלק השלישי בסדרת Beyond the Play.
הגעתי לספר הזה עם לא מעט סקרנות.
אחרי שני ספרים בסדרה, כבר הכרתי את הדינמיקה של משפחת קלהאן – משפחה מאמצת עם לב גדול וספורט בדם. הפעם, הסיפור מתמקד בסבסטיאן – האח השלישי – שלמרות שהחיים כיוונו אותו למגרש, הוא בכלל חולם להיות שף.
ואז מגיעה מאיה.
מאיה היא מדענית אסטרופיזיקאית, או לפחות מתיימרת להיות כזו. בפועל, הרגשתי שהיא יותר קלישאה מהלכת – האישה החזקה מבחוץ ורכה מבפנים, דמות "חכמה אבל שבירה" שתפקידה העיקרי הוא לתת לסבסטיאן קונטרה ואתגר רגשי לשחק איתו.
וזה בערך מה שקורה – לאורך כל העלילה הרגשתי שיש פה משחק חיזור חד־צדדי שבו סבסטיאן אמור לשבור את מאיה ולגרום לה להתאהב בו, בזמן שאני בעיקר שברתי את הראש בניסיון להבין מה הוא מצא בה בכלל.
סיפור חייו של סבסטיאן מורכב, ובחלקו – כשהסופרת כבר מגיעה אליו- גם נוגע ללב.
הבעיה האמיתית?
לא רק הדמות של מאיה. גם הבילד אפ של הסיפור האישי שלה, היה קצת תלוש ולא אמין או לפחות מנופח כמו בלון.
אנחנו בשנת 2025, ומשפחות כבר לא יושבות מסביב לשולחן ומנדנדות לבנות שלהן להתחתן, ללדת ולמצוא עבודה "נשית" כמו הוראה.
וגם אם כן — היום, ילדים לא ממש מתחשבים במה שההורים שלהם רוצים.
הם עושים את הדרך שלהם, בקצב שלהם, ובתנאים שלהם.
בכלל היום, מצפים מבנות להיות לא פחות טובות מבנים. לקרוע את העולם, לאפות דוקטורטים לפני הקפה של הבוקר ולהיות כוכבות־על.
אז הקונפליקט שהסופרת מוכרת לי — כאילו אנחנו תקועים בשנות החמישים — פשוט לא עובד.
בשורה התחתונה?
סבסטיאן הוא דמות חמודה ברמות, מהאלה שהייתי שולחת לחברים שלי עם תגית "שמישהו ישמור עליו".
אבל מאיה? ררררררררררר.
וביחד? יצא סיפור שפשוט לא החזיק.
(שני כוכבים לסבסטיאן, חצי כוכב על כל הפוטנציאל שהיה כאן — ואז פשוט נמס כמו גלידה במדבר.)

I picked up Stealing Home with a fair bit of curiosity.
After two books in the Beyond the Play series, I already knew the Callahan family's vibe — all heart, all hustle, all sports.
This time, the spotlight’s on Sebastian — the third brother — who might have the talent for sports, but his absolute dream is cooking, not catching fly balls.
Enter Maya.
Maya’s supposed to be an astrophysicist — or at least that’s what the résumé says.
In reality? She felt more like a living, breathing cliché: rugged exterior, soft interior, "brilliant but emotionally broken."
Her primary purpose seems to be giving Sebastian an emotional obstacle course to run — and boy, does he run it.
Meanwhile, I spent most of the book scratching my head, wondering what on earth he saw in her.
Sebastian’s backstory is layered, and when the author finally lets it breathe, it is genuinely moving.
But the real issue?
Not just Maya herself — it’s how her personal story is framed.
We’re in 2025. Families aren’t sitting around pressuring daughters to marry, pop out kids, and find "proper" teaching jobs anymore.
And even if they are? Today's kids aren’t exactly lining up to please their parents. They're busy carving their paths with zero apologies.
These days, daughters are expected to out-hustle sons, crush degrees before breakfast, and run the world.
Trying to sell me a 1950s-style conflict in today's world? It just didn’t land.
Bottom line?
Sebastian is pure cinnamon roll energy — the kind of character you want to wrap in bubble wrap and protect at all costs.
But Maya? Rrrrrrrrrrr.
And together? Their story couldn’t hold itself together.
(Two stars for Sebastian, half a star for the potential, which sadly melted faster than an ice cream cone in the desert.)
