הספר השלישי בסדרת Milford College מאת Noelle Adams. קתרינה, העובדת בספריית הקולג׳, משתפת פעולה עם מקס, מעצב גרפי, מרצה חדש, גרוש ואב לילדה, בהקמת תערוכת סטודנטים.
לקוראות שאוהבות רומנים קצרים, אבות יחידניים, פער גילים, רומנטיקה באקדמיה, קשר לא מחייב וגיבורים בוגרים שכבר בנו לעצמם קריירה וחיים.
המשיכה בין מקס לקתרינה משכנעת, פער הגילים עובד היטב ומקס נמצא בגיל ובשלב חיים מעניינים יותר מגיבורי קולג׳ צעירים. גם כזוג קל לחבב אותם.
הקונפליקט הרגשי מלאכותי ואינו מתאים לגילם. אהבתו של מקס לבתו אינה מונעת ממנו לאהוב בת זוג, וקתרינה אינה חייבת להשלים תואר ולקנות דירה לפני שתוכל להתאהב.
קתרינה עובדת בספרייה של מילפורד קולג׳. היא הגיעה למקום בעקבות בן זוגה, שלמד רפואה, אך לאחר שהוא עזב אותה החליטה שבגיל עשרים ושבע היא רוצה לבנות לעצמה חיים שאינם תלויים בזוגיות. היא מתכננת לסיים תואר שני, לקנות דירה ולהתקדם לפני שתיכנס שוב למערכת יחסים רצינית.
מקס הוא מעצב גרפי מצליח בן שלושים ותשע, גרוש ואב לילדה מנישואיו. הוא מתחיל ללמד בקולג׳ אחת לשבוע, וכאשר תלמידיו מציגים תערוכה בספרייה, קתרינה מגויסת לסייע להם בהקמתה.
המשיכה בין מקס לקתרינה מיידית. שניהם מחליטים להיכנס למערכת יחסים לא מחייבת. קתרינה אינה רוצה שהקשר יסיט אותה מן המטרות שהציבה לעצמה. מקס משוכנע שאינו מחפש זוגיות, מפני שבתו היא מרכז חייו והוא אינו רוצה לסבך את עולמה.
פער הגילים בספר עובד היטב, ומקס הוא דמות גברית בגיל ובשלב חיים שמדברים אליי יותר מגיבורי קולג׳ צעירים. גם המשיכה בין הדמויות משכנעת. הספר כולל סצנות סקס מפורטות רבות, ובזה נואל אדמס בהחלט אינה מתקמצנת.
היקף הסצנות לא הטריד אותי, אבל גם רומן מיני צריך עלילה וקונפליקט שמחזיקים מים.
הפער בין היומרה להציג רומן בוגר ובשל לבין ההתנהגות הילדותית והמטופשת של הגיבורים מחליש את העלילה. מקס וקתרינה הם אנשים עם קריירות, מטרות וניסיון חיים, אך ברגע שהם נקשרים רגשית הם מתנהלים כמו תלמידי תיכון בני שש־עשרה.
האמירה של מקס שלפיה אין לו מקום בלב אלא לבתו נשמעת דרמטית, אך אין בה הרבה היגיון. אהבה לילדה ואהבה לבת זוג אינן מתחרות על אותו מקום. גם הניסיון של קתרינה לנהל את חייה הרגשיים לפי סדר משימות, קודם תואר, אחר כך דירה ורק אז זוגיות, מרגיש מלאכותי. אפשר לרצות עצמאות, לקנות בית ולהתאהב בעת ובעונה אחת. החיים אינם רשימה מסודרת.
Single Dad הוא ספר קליל וקריא עם זוג שקל לחבב ומשיכה שעובדת היטב. הבעיה היא שהעלילה הרגשית פשוטה מדי, והקונפליקט כולו נשען על שני אנשים בוגרים שמתעקשים להתנהל כאילו אהבה מבטלת את שאר החיים.

Single Dad by Noelle Adams is the third book in the Milford College series, which focuses on a different couple from the college faculty and staff each time.
Katrina works in the library at Milford College. She originally moved there because of her boyfriend, who was studying medicine, but after he left her, she decided that at twenty-seven she wanted to build a life that did not depend on a relationship. She plans to complete her master’s degree, buy an apartment, and pursue her own goals before entering another serious relationship.
Max is a successful thirty-nine-year-old graphic designer, a divorced man and the father of a daughter from his marriage. He begins teaching at the college once a week, and when his students hold an exhibition in the library, Katrina is recruited to help them set it up.
The attraction between Max and Katrina is immediate. They both decide to enter a casual relationship with no expectations. Katrina does not want the relationship to distract her from the goals she has set for herself. Max is convinced that he is not looking for a relationship because his daughter is the center of his life and he does not want to complicate her world.
The age gap works well, and Max is a male character whose age and stage of life appeal to me more than those of young college heroes. The attraction between the characters is also convincing. The book includes many detailed sex scenes, and Noelle Adams certainly does not hold back in that respect.
The number of scenes did not bother me, but even a sexually driven romance needs a plot and a conflict that can hold water.
The gap between the novel’s attempt to present a mature adult romance and the childish and foolish behavior of its protagonists weakens the story. Max and Katrina are people with careers, goals, and life experience, but as soon as they become emotionally attached, they begin behaving like sixteen-year-old high school students.
Max’s claim that there is no room in his heart for anyone except his daughter sounds dramatic, but it makes very little sense. Love for a child and love for a partner are not competing for the same space.
Katrina’s attempt to manage her emotional life according to an ordered list of tasks also feels artificial. First the degree, then the apartment and only afterward a relationship. A person can want independence, buy a home, and fall in love at the same time. Life is not a neatly organized list.
Single Dad is a light, readable romance with a couple who are easy to like and have convincing chemistry. The problem is that the emotional plot is too simple, and the entire conflict depends on two adults insisting on behaving as though falling in love would cancel out the rest of their lives.
