Secret Santa מאת נואל אדמס הוא הספר הרביעי בסדרת Milford College, שבה כל ספר עוסק בזוג אחר מאנשי הסגל בקולג׳.

ככל שהיא מבלה עם ג׳ורג׳, כך משהו ביחסים שלה עם ג׳רמי נעשה פחות ברור. הטרופ המרכזי בספר friends to lovers עובד לא רע. מיי וג׳רמי מכירים כבר שתים־עשרה שנים, הם חלק קבוע זה מחייו של זו, ולכן ברור למה שינוי ביחסים ביניהם מפחיד אותה. יש כאן באמת מה להפסיד, לא רק רומן שלא הצליח.

העלילה נמסרת מהזווית של מיי, אבל דווקא ג׳רמי הוא הדמות שהייתי רוצה לקבל ממנה יותר. הוא היה ילד אומנה ולא היו לו מערכות יחסים עמוקות ויציבות לפני מיי. העובדה שהיא הפכה לאדם החשוב והקבוע ביותר בחייו מעניקה להתנהגות שלו משקל רגשי גדול יותר. אלא שרוב החלק הזה נשאר בחוץ. מבחינתי זו החמצה, משום שהעבר שלו יכול היה להוסיף לסיפור עומק שחסר לו.
ג׳ורג׳, לעומת זאת, מתפקד בעיקר כמנוף עלילתי. הדייטים איתו מאפשרים למיי להבין בהדרגה שהשאלה המעניינת באמת אינה מי שולח לה את המתנות, אלא מה היא מרגישה כלפי ג׳רמי.
Secret Santa הוא רומן קצר, קליל וחביב, עם טרופ של חברים לאוהבים שעובד בזכות ההיסטוריה המשותפת של הדמויות. הוא נעשה מעט מלודרמטי במקומות מסוימים, והייתי שמחה לקבל ממנו יותר, אבל בסך הכול הוא עושה היטב את מה שהוא מבטיח.

Secret Santa by Noelle Adams is the fourth book in the Milford College series, where each book focuses on a different couple from the college's faculty and staff.
May and Jeremy have been best friends since high school. For twelve years, they have been almost everything to each other, but never a couple. At least from May’s point of view, the physical attraction simply was not there.
Recently, something has changed.
She has started looking at Jeremy in a way that no longer fits neatly within the definition of friendship.
May, twenty-seven, works as the student life coordinator at Milford College. Jeremy, also twenty-seven, runs the college IT department and has a cocker spaniel named Leo. They have known each other for almost all of their adult lives, and a deep intimacy has grown between them over years of friendship.
As Christmas approaches, May is responsible for organizing the workplace Secret Santa exchange, where participants are supposed to buy gifts within a limited budget.
Then May begins receiving gifts at her office that are clearly far more expensive than the agreed amount.
She assumes they're from George, a man who has recently started showing interest in her, and eventually she begins dating him.
But the more time she spends with George, the less clear her relationship with Jeremy becomes.
The central friends-to-lovers trope works quite well here.
May and Jeremy have known each other for twelve years. They are permanent fixtures in each other’s lives, so it makes sense that changing the nature of their relationship frightens her. There is genuinely something to lose here, not simply a romance that might fail.
What worked less well for me was the melodrama that appears once the relationship begins to shift.
May spends a great deal of time worrying about losing Jeremy, and at times the book leans a little too heavily on that fear.
On the other hand, in their case the fear has a real basis. If their relationship changes and fails, they could lose a bond that has been central to both of their lives for more than a decade.
The story is told from May’s point of view, but Jeremy is actually the character I would have liked to understand better.
He grew up in foster care and did not have many deep, stable relationships before May. The fact that she became the most important and consistent person in his life gives his behavior much more emotional weight.
Unfortunately, most of that remains outside the story.
For me, that is a missed opportunity, because his past could have added some of the emotional depth the novella lacks.
George, by contrast, functions mainly as a plot device.
Dating him lets May gradually understand that the interesting question isn't who is sending her the gifts.
It is what she actually feels for Jeremy.
Secret Santa is a short, light, likable romance with a friends-to-lovers trope that works because of the characters' long history.
It gets a little melodramatic in places, and I would have liked more depth, especially for Jeremy.
But overall, it does what it promises quite well.
