Phantasma הוא הספר הראשון בסדרת Wicked Games, ובהתחלה ממש לא הייתה לי סבלנות אליו. הוא נפתח לאט, מבולגן ולא מספיק מסקרן, מהסוג שגורם לך לתהות למה כולם עפים עליו. אמא מתה, סכנה לאבד את הטירה, שתי אחיות עם מטען משפחתי כבד, קסם שעובר בירושה ואחות צעירה שנעלמת. הכול גותי מאוד, אבל עדיין לא באמת מעניין.

ואז אופיליה נכנסת לפנטזמה כדי למצוא את אחותה.

פנטזמה היא מבוך של מסדרונות מתפתלים, אולמות נשפים מפוארים, שדים ופיתויים. אופיליה צריכה להתמודד עם תשעה אתגרים, כל אחד מסוכן יותר מקודמו. יכול להיות רק מנצח אחד, ושאר המתמודדים לא יעצרו בשום דבר כדי לחסל את יריביהם.

מרגע שהמשחק מתחיל, הספר נכנס לקצב שהולך ומתגבר עד לשיא. אופיליה אמנם מגיעה לפנטזמה כדי למצוא את אחותה ג׳נביב, אבל מהר מאוד מתברר שהמשחק בוחן את גבולות ההישרדות והאנושיות שלה.

אופיליה היא נקרומנסרית. היא מתקשרת עם מתים, רואה רוחות ונושאת כוח שהיא עצמה עדיין לא מבינה עד הסוף. צללים רודפים אותה בתוך תודעתה, והחשש מכישלון דוחף אותה שוב ושוב אל קצה היכולת.

המשחק מעמיד בפניה אתגרים אישיים ומפעיל אצל הקורא את אינסטינקט ההישרדות ואת יצר המציצנות. פנטזמה היא תחרות, אבל גם מופע אכזרי. המשתתפים סובלים, נשברים, בוגדים זה בזה וממשיכים. מישהו תמיד צופה, וגם הקורא נשאר לצפות כשהמופע נעשה מכוער יותר.

החוקים ברורים. הם לא נועדו להגן על איש. פנטזמה הוא משחקי הרעב על סטרואידים.

כמעט כל החלטה של אופיליה פוגעת במישהו. היא לא יכולה לבחור בחירה מוסרית ונקייה. היא תמיד חייבת להחליט מי ישלם את המחיר, כמה היא מוכנה לסכן ואיזה חלק מעצמה היא מוכנה להקהות כדי להמשיך לחיות.

בתוך הלחץ של התחרות מופיע בלקוול.

הוא מסתורי, מסוכן ומעצבן במידה המדויקת. אופיליה כורתת איתו עסקה, והוא עוזר לה לשרוד את המשחק. כמובן שיש מחיר. תמיד יש מחיר. אחד הכללים המרכזיים של פנטזמה הוא שאסור להתאהב, ובלקוול הוא בדיוק הסיבה שבגללה ממציאים כללים כאלה.

הרומנטיקה ביניהם עובדת היטב. היא נבנית מתוך המתח של המשחק, ולא מרגישה כמו עלילה נפרדת שהודבקה אליו. בלקוול הוא חלק מפנטזמה. המשיכה אליו מסכנת את אופיליה, מערערת את שיקול דעתה ומכריחה אותה להתמודד עם השאלה במי אפשר לבטוח בעולם שבו כל קשר עלול להפוך לעסקה.

הפתיחה עדיין ארוכה ומבולגנת מדי. הספר לוקח את הזמן עד שהוא מגיע לדבר שלשמו התכנסנו, והיה אפשר לחתוך בלי רחמים את שלושת הפרקים הראשונים שעוסקים במשפחה, בבית ובכוחות של האחיות. אבל מהרגע שהתחרות נפתחת, הספר נעשה אפל, קצבי ומצוין.

נהניתי ממנו מאוד. מהמשחק, מהעולם, מהאכזריות, ובעיקר מהרומנטיקה בין אופיליה לבלקוול.

פנטזמה אינו בודק רק מי יישאר בחיים. הוא בודק כמה מהר אדם טוב לומד לפגוע כדי להישאר בחיים.

Phantasma is the first book in the Wicked Games series, and at first, I had absolutely no patience for it. The book opens slowly and somewhat messily, and I could not understand why everyone was so excited about it. A dead mother, the danger of losing a castle, two sisters with heavy family baggage, inherited magic, and a younger sister who disappears. Everything is very Gothic, but not interesting enough.

And then Ophelia enters Phantasma in order to find her sister.

Phantasma is a maze of twisting corridors, magnificent ballrooms, demons, and temptations. Ophelia has to face nine challenges, each one more dangerous than the last. There can be only one winner, and the other contestants will stop at nothing to eliminate their rivals.

From the moment the game begins, the book finds a rhythm that keeps building toward its climax. Ophelia enters Phantasma to find her sister Genevieve, but it quickly becomes clear that the game is testing the limits of her survival and humanity.

Ophelia is a necromancer. She communicates with the dead, sees ghosts, and carries a power she herself does not yet fully understand. Shadows pursue her inside her own mind, and the fear of failure pushes her again and again to the edge of her abilities.

The game places personal challenges before her and activates both the reader’s survival instinct and the urge to watch. Phantasma is a competition, but it is also a cruel spectacle. The participants suffer, break, betray one another, and continue. Someone is always watching, and the reader keeps watching too, even as the show becomes uglier.

The rules are clear. They are not meant to protect anyone. Phantasma is The Hunger Games on steroids.

Almost every decision Ophelia makes hurts someone. She cannot make a clean moral choice. She always has to decide who will pay the price, how much she is willing to risk, and which part of herself she is willing to numb in order to stay alive.

Inside the pressure of the competition, Blackwell appears.

He is mysterious, dangerous, and annoying in exactly the right measure. Ophelia makes a deal with him, and he helps her survive the game. Of course, there is a price. There is always a price. One of Phantasma’s central rules is that falling in love is forbidden, and Blackwell is exactly the reason such rules are invented.

The romance between them works very well. It is built from the tension of the game and does not feel like a separate plot pasted onto it. Blackwell is part of Phantasma. Ophelia’s attraction to him endangers her, unsettles her judgment, and forces her to confront the question of whom one can trust in a world where every connection can become a bargain.

The opening is still too long and too messy. The book takes its time before it reaches the thing we came for, and the first three chapters, which deal with the family, the house, and the sisters’ powers, could have been cut without mercy. But from the moment the competition begins, the book becomes dark, fast-paced, and excellent.

I enjoyed it very much. The game, the world, the cruelty, and above all, the romance between Ophelia and Blackwell.

Phantasma not only tests who will stay alive. It tests how quickly a good person learns to hurt others in order to survive.
