Of Murders and Mages הוא ספר פתיחה שמרגיש כמו ביס ראשון ממנה מסקרנת — קליל, טעים, ומשאיר חשק להמשיך לטעימה הבאה. זה מסוג הספרים שאפשר לקרוא בכמה שעות בלי להתאמץ, בלי להזיע, ובלי להרגיש שבזבזת את הזמן. הוא לא מטלטל עולמות, אבל כן משאיר אותך סקרנית לדעת לאן כל זה יתפתח.
אלה רמונו, צעירה שרק התחילה עבודה חדשה בקזינו בעיירה רמבלר שבנבדה, מגלה מהר מאוד שהחיים שלה עומדים להשתנות מקצה לקצה.
לא מספיק שהקולגה החדש שלה חתיך בצורה מעצבנת ואנטיפת, חתולה שחורה עקשנית מחליטה לאמץ אותה, והיא עצמה מגלה פתאום שהיא מכשפה עם כישרון יוצא דופן: קריאת הולוגרמות רגשיות של מקרי מוות קסומים.
במהלך העבודה היא נשאבת לחקירת סדרת רציחות מסתוריות — חמישה קורבנות, אפס קצה חוט — ומגלה גם סוד מטלטל מעבר משפחתי: נסיבות מותו של אביה לא היו תמימות כפי שסיפרו לה.
כשהעבר וההווה מתנגשים, אלה נאלצת ללמוד להפעיל את כוחותיה, לשרוד פוליטיקות קסומות, להילחם באינסטינקטים הלא תמיד נכונים שלה — ובעיקר, להישאר בחיים עד שהחקירה תגלה את כל הקלפים.
הכתיבה קלילה מאוד, עם לא מעט רגעים משעשעים, והרבה חיבה לז'אנר של פנטזיית מסתורין קלילה.
מצד שני, לא הכל מבריק.
הדמויות, כולל אלה עצמה, מרגישות לעיתים שטחיות — חביבות, אבל לא באמת עגולות.
עולם הקסם נשאר ברקע מבלי להיבנות לעומק, והעלילה עצמה לא מצליחה להפתיע: רוב הטוויסטים מתגלים די מהר.
בשורה התחתונה?
Of Murders and Mages הוא ספר פתיחה בידורי, שמתאים בדיוק למי שמחפש שעה קלה של בריחה קסומה, לא מחייבת ולא מתיימרת.
לא ספר שישנה את חייך, אבל בהחלט כזה שעושה את העבודה בכיף.
ובלי קשר — אני חייבת לציין את הכריכות היפהפיות של הסדרה הזו. זו הייתה הסיבה הראשונית שבגללה רכשתי את הספר, ולשמחתי — במקרה הזה, הכריכה לגמרי צדקה.

Of Murders and Mages feels like a first bite of something intriguing — light, enjoyable, and enough to make you curious about what's next. It's the kind of book you can finish in a few easy hours, without overthinking, and without feeling like you wasted your time. It won’t rock your world, but it does leave you wondering where the story will go.
Ella Ramono, a young woman who just landed a job at a casino in the small town of Rambler, Nevada, quickly discovers that her life is about to turn upside down.
Not only is her new coworker annoyingly handsome and grumpy, but a stubborn black cat decides to adopt her, and to top it all off, she finds out she’s a witch — one with a rare ability to read emotional holograms left behind by magical deaths.
As she settles into her new job, Ella gets pulled into an investigation of five mysterious murders — five victims, zero leads — while also uncovering a personal secret that shakes her world: the circumstances of her father’s death might not have been as innocent as she was led to believe.
Caught between the past and the present, she must master her powers, survive magical politics, fight her often-wrong instincts, and, most importantly, stay alive long enough to uncover the truth.
The writing is light and breezy, filled with charming moments and a genuine love for casual mystery fantasy.
That said, not everything works perfectly.
The characters — including Ella herself — sometimes feel a little thin.
The magical world remains mainly in the background, without much development, and the plot, while entertaining, fails to surprise: most twists are easy to spot from the start.
Bottom line?
Of Murders and Mages is a fun, lighthearted opening for readers looking for a quick, whimsical escape.
It’s not a life-changer, nor a brain-stretcher, but if you approach it for what it is — easy, unpretentious entertainment — it gets the job done.
And on a side note, I have to mention the beautiful covers in this series. Honestly, the cover was the first thing that drew me to the book, and for once, judging by the cover didn’t disappoint.
