עוד ספר שהורדתי במסגרת Stuff Your Kindle, וידעתי בדיוק למה אני נכנסת: סיפור קליל, עלילה צפויה, וגיבורה אחת שמנסה לשנות את חייה ולהפסיק לחכות לאהבה נכזבת מהעבר.
מלודי היא ספרנית בת עשרים וארבע, חסרת ניסיון מיני, שגרה בעיירת ילדותה וחולמת בסתר על אדם, החבר של אחיה. כשהייתה בת שש עשרה, היא העזה להתוודות בפניו על אהבתה. הוא לא נענה לה, התגייס לצבא ונעלם מהנוף. כעת, לאחר שנים, הוא חוזר לעיירה, ונדמה שכלום לא השתנה. מלודי עדיין רווקה, עדיין חולמת, ועדיין שבויה בזיכרון של מישהו שלא באמת ראה אותה.
לקראת יום הולדתה ה־25, היא מחליטה לשנות כיוון. היא מתכננת שינוי חיצוני ופנימי, כזה שיעזור לה למצוא סוף סוף את מי שיאהב אותה באמת. רק שאז היא מגלה שאדם אמור לשמור עליה.
בסיטואציה שנוצרה, מלודי מבינה שאין לה ברירה אלא לפנות דווקא אליו. היא מבקשת ממנו עזרה. הוא צריך ללמד אותה את רזי הפלירטוט והדייטינג. הוא מהסס. היא מתעקשת. ובהדרגה, עם כל משא ומתן קטן ביניהם, נוצרת תנועה חדשה, מורכבת יותר, בין שני אנשים שלא באמת סיימו את הסיפור ביניהם.
העלילה כוללת הרבה סצנות של כימיה מתוקה בין מלודי לאדם. אבל לא מדובר ביצירה מלוטשת. הסופרת מנסה לבנות את הדמות של מלודי ולהראות התפתחות אישיותית, אך מאידך כל מה שהיא מצליחה להשיג הוא לקבע את הדמות שלה בקלישאה של הנערה התמימה שמחכה לאביר על סוס לבן.
הספר כתוב בפשטות. הוא לא מציע חידוש אמיתי, והדמויות אינן עמוקות או יוצאות דופן. אבל יש בו משהו כן ואמיתי. רגעים קטנים של רגש, של כמיהה פשוטה ליחס, לאהבה, להבנה. מדובר בספר עם גרעין רומנטי מתוק שמתחבא תחת כתיבה בוסרית.
מלודי מצליחה לעורר אמפתיה, בעיקר כשהיא מבקשת להפסיק להיות הילדה שאף אחד לא סופר. אדם, לעומתה, לעיתים מתנהג באופן קלישאתי מדי, אך הקונפליקט הפנימי שלו לפחות מקבל נפח מסוים ככל שהסיפור מתקדם.
זה אינו ספר מורכב. הוא גם לא מתיימר להיות כזה. מדובר ברומן רומנטי קליל, שמתאים בדיוק לקריאה בלי מאמץ. יש בו אלמנטים מוכרים: אהבה אסורה, גבר מסוכן מבחוץ ופגיע מבפנים, ואישה צעירה שמבקשת לפרוץ את הדימוי שדבק בה במשך שנים.
בשורה התחתונה, זהו ספר בינוני. לא גרוע, לא בלתי נסבל, אבל גם לא משהו שייזכר. חביב, צפוי, עם כמה רגעים שמצליחים בכל זאת לגעת. מי שמחפש דרמה עמוקה או כתיבה יוצאת דופן לא ימצא אותן כאן. אבל מי שרוצה לסיים ערב עם חיוך קטן, ימצא בו בדיוק את זה.

Another book I downloaded through Stuff Your Kindle day, and I knew exactly what I was getting into: a light story, a predictable plot, and a heroine trying to turn her life around and stop waiting for a love that never was.
Melody is a twenty-four-year-old librarian with no romantic experience, still living in her hometown and secretly pining for Adam, her brother’s best friend. When she was sixteen, she dared to confess her feelings to him. He didn’t reciprocate; instead, he enlisted in the army and disappeared. Now, years later, he returns to town, and it seems nothing has changed. Melody is still single, still dreaming, and still trapped in the memory of someone who never really saw her.
As her twenty-fifth birthday approaches, she decides to change direction. She plans an internal and external transformation to find someone who will finally genuinely love her. But then she discovers that Adam has been assigned to be her bodyguard.
In the unfolding situation, Melody realizes she has no choice but to turn to him for help. She asks him to teach her the art of flirting and dating. He hesitates. She insists. And gradually, through their small negotiations, a new dynamic begins to take shape – more complex, more intimate – between two people whose story isn’t quite over.
The story features many sweet moments of chemistry between Melody and Adam. But it’s far from polished. The author attempts to portray Melody’s personal growth, but ultimately reinforces the cliché of the innocent girl waiting for her knight in shining armor.
The book is not complicated. It doesn’t offer anything genuinely new, and the characters aren’t particularly deep or unique. But there’s something genuine and heartfelt about it – small emotional moments, a quiet yearning for love and understanding. It’s a sweet romantic core wrapped in unrefined writing.
Melody evokes empathy, especially when she tries to shed the image of the overlooked girl. Adam, on the other hand, sometimes acts too much like a stereotype, but his inner conflict gains some depth as the story progresses.
This isn’t a complex book. It doesn’t try to be. It’s a light romantic read, perfect for when you want to breeze through a story without much effort. It includes familiar elements: forbidden love, a man who seems harsh on the outside but is wounded inside, and a young woman trying to escape the image that has defined her for years.
Bottom line: this is an average book. Not terrible, not unforgettable, but also not particularly memorable. It’s pleasant, predictable, and has a few moments that still manage to touch you. If you're looking for emotional depth or exceptional writing, this isn't it. But if you want to end your evening with a small smile, this book delivers just that.
